Formerly PILZILLA.

Pilzilla is a beer that I've been brewing for years. Each year it gets bigger and bigger. Nicknamed "The beer that took over Tokyo". It is an unfiltered Keller Bier. Nicley hopped at this point with 6 to 7 different kinds of hops and about 6.25 % ABV Each year we will add another variety of hop and bump the alcohol a bit. This is not your average pilsner, get it before we drink it all! Prost!!

A - Three full fingers of ultra crisp pure white cappuccino like whipped frothiness... Excellent retention... The head subsides slightly and becomes rather lopsided, but never fades... Beyond loaded with vibrant swirling rapid paced carbonation... The color is an exceedingly pale straw yellow... There is a very slight haze... A bit of chunky lacing clings to the glass...

S - Bursting with clean crisp grains... Some mild lemon notes... Lots of subdued floral notes... Simple, straight forward and quite intoxicating...

T - Lemon is first... A wide variety of grainy notes... Floral and earthy notes as well... The deep finish has a nice hop bite the rises and then lingers for a bit...

M - Light to medium bodied... Lots of mild but bristling carbonation... Sleek... Clean... Crisp... A bit of lushiness... A bit of creaminess...

D - Nicely executed... Subtle and powerful both at the same time... Quaffable... Loaded with character... Loaded with flavor... Loaded with complexity... This one is also a bargain to boot... Voodoo is a very underrated appreciated brewery that deserves wider attention... This is very good stuff and highly recommended...

I got this beer from Jwiss22. Thanks Justin!

22oz bottle served in a glass beer mug.

L - lightly hazed golden color with a white head that thinned down to a layer.

S - grass and lemon zest.

T - very good balance of tart lemon zest and sweet malt.

F - medium bodied with a crisp feel.

O - it's good.

Thanks to Curt for this one.

A: The pour is a hazed golden orange color with almost no head; just a thin ring of white foam.

S: There is a pronounced sweetness to the aroma which is consists mostly of apples. A fair amount of malt and bread to it with a light yeastiness and some floral hop notes. There is a bit of biscuit malt that comes through on the back end.

T: Floral and spicy hops with a slight bitterness to it and some grass. Green apple peels and a mild sweetness. There is sort of an aspirin aftertaste to it, unfortunately. Some light citrus notes come through, too.

M: Light to medium in body with a low to medium level of carbonation.

O: The aroma was quite nice, but the flavor fell short, especially with the bitterness and aspirin notes.

Never had this style before, so it seemed like a good beer for new beer Sunday. I've also never tried a Voodoo beer. Here we go. I poured the beer from a bomber into a tulip glass. Big, fluffy head, with a hazy, golden body underneath. Has a bit of floral, spicy scent. Hmm. This is an interesting taste, unlike any beer I've ever had. Kind of an earthy, pungent grassy taste. Not sure what kind of hops bring that to the table. There's a slightly bitter aftertaste. The mouthfeel is standard. Not too thick, slightly carbonated. This is pretty tasty, but probably not my favorite type of beer. I might have one every now and then. I'd like to try more of Voodoo's beers.

aroma and taste are dominated by grassy, bright hop flavor. a bit of sweet corn like malt flavor to counter the hops. clean flavors. body is thin, with higher carbonation.

my first beer of this rare style, glad I tried it.

Poured from tap into a standard pint glass at TJs in Paoli PA.

A: A medium to light golden color with a one finger white head. No glass lacing.

S: Sweet bready malts with fruity notes of apple, grape and lemon. Some grassy hoppy notes fill in.

T: Lots of sweet fruit flavors with apple, green grape, lemon and a bit of pineapple. The sweet bready biscuit malts take over the fruit flavors and allow some grainy grassy hops to come towards the back. Still, the bready sweetness wins out at the finish and squashes the slight hops bitterness that was found.

M: Medium and coating, but not in a great way. Sweetness seems to squash what hops poke through.

O: Definitely not a classic pils, but this is labeled as a Keller or Zwickel so one could expect something a little different. Still, this is a bit too sticky sweet for this style as it needs to be crisper and hoppier.

Not a pilsner for sure, so if you are looking for that in this beer, forget it. Maybe it fits the Zwickel category better but it's not a keller or classic pils if you ask me. A decent beer, but not something I would ever seek out. I think all of our awesome other PA pils kills my taste buds for this beer. Shame, because I love the dark Voodoo beers.

Review from notes during our blind tasting. Thanks to Jeff for bringing this!

Poured a light yellow/honey color, mildly hazy but nothing to detract from. Fluffy white head. Aroma is light, very slightly bready, sweet, and a peculiar lemon drop bouquet. A very hoppy beer. Lots of grass, lemon peel, touch of earthy bitterness in the finish. An effervescent, light, and easy drinking beer. Quite delicious.

A pilsner on steroids, sounds good to me!

Pours a cloudy yellow color with a nice head and great lacing.

Smells like citrus, pine, and earthy hops with a bread malt backbone.

Taste is an explosion of hops in a not so bitter sort of way. Very pungent and lingering hop flavor with a hint of bread to balance.

Mouthfeel is moderate, yet crisp.

Overall, its really good. Wish they had bottle dates so I could buy it more consistently.

Pours a hazy pale orange with a finger and a half of fluffy white head.

Nose is dominated by piney, resiny German hops and lemon zest. Slight lager yeast is the nose, but the hops overpower.

Taste is dominated by the hops as well. Some bready pilsener flavors come through underneath, followed by a nice sweetness. The citrus from the hops really comes out in this one.

Mouthfeel is medium and creamy with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is good. Easy to drink, with no noticeable alcohol, and quite tasty.

This brew pours out as a golden yellow color with a fluffy white head on it. The lacing isn't too bad. The smell is a lot like a pilsner but its also has a nice hop aroma too. The taste is hoppy enough to mask the grassy flavor. The mouthfeel is pretty carbonated and had a light body. Overall not a bad beer at all, I could drink this one again.

A - Pours a cloudy golden yellow color with a two fingered bright white head and nice amounts of staying carbonation.

S - Zesty lemon rinds, pepper, herbs, bready malt, and grass. Aroma smells crisp in the nose.

T - Mimics the nose with a healthy dose of grass and lemons up front, migrating into a citrus and piney bitter finish. The malt is more evident up front but once the citrus bitterness kicks in, the malt is completely buried. Leaves the mouth with a little peppery spice and alot of lingering grapefruit bitterness. Very crisp and punchy on the palate.

M - This beer is incredibly THICK and heavy bodied for a Pilsner, way off the style, but I absolutely love it! I get a little warming in the back of the throat even though it's only 6.7%.

O - I've always liked this beer, it's dialed in for the real hop heads in the crowd and delivers the goods in a very aggressive manner for a Pils. Great job Voodoo! Fist pump!

Big thanks to JM03 for the want!!

A - Pours a sunny yellow/orange color, hazy opaque, with a big 2 finger fluffy head that laces well. Looks bubbly and crisp.

S - Nice crisp, sweet citrus, bready yeast character, slightly spicy and herbal. Light malt sweetness.

T - Lightly tart, sweet citrus. Herbal and slightly spicy. Yeasty and malty, with a slight sweetness and breadiness. It's got a lot of things going on, and they're yummy!

M - Crisp, light and slick. Coats just a hair, leaving a nice linger.

D/O - Drinkability is great, and overall, this is a rich and tasty frankenstein of a pils! Lovin' it!

Part of my tax day bender. Poured into a tulip because I was too lazy to get up and get a pilsner glass. Beer is yellow with a mild haze and a diffuse head that leaves very little lacing on the glass.

Aroma is sweet and a little bitter, biting, smells nice.

Beer is thin and wet up front but finishes rather dry with an odd bitterness to it. It is almost sandy on the finish, gritty. Are these from the hops? It is not an unenjoyable beer, it is about what you'd expect from a keller but there is something about that that makes it not measure up in my mind. I think the finish was just too harsh for my tastes. I'd have ti again on draft, out of the bottle probably too. It was fine.

A pure white foamy head erupts from the orange-copper, hazy body and really takes its time before dissipating to leave a dense sticky lacing clinging to the glass.

The generous crisp hop aromas jump from the glass followed by some lager malt. The hop aromas are just as varied as advertised providing hints of citrus and floral and even grass or pine.

The flavor is immediately hoppy with citrus zest and grassy, possibly a touch floral with a bready, chewy maltiness mid-palate and then back to the hop bitterness punch to finish.

Wow, is this beer clean. It just tastes very pure with its light to medium body and generous carbonation with a nice punch of flavors.

This was a great beer of a style I really need to try again. Well-done Voodoo.

thanks to PittRooney for this little gem!

12oz bottle at fridge temp poured into an SA perfect pint glass. no freshness date. listed as 7% alc., 50 IBU's, 9 varieties of hops.

pours out a very nice clear golden color, just a trace of haze. big fluffy, pure white head, great retention, left a thick layer. lots of sticky lace. looks like a great pils.

not as big of an aroma as i was hopeing for. your usual mineral, somewhat sulfer like lager yeast is most noticable, next would be some lemony citrus, leafy hop balanced by some grains.

the hops show up more in the taste. lots of lemony citrus, earthy, floral, somewhat spicy hop flavors with some mineral lager yeast, and some grains. mostly hop forward. finishs with a decent amount of lingering bitterness.

super clean, crisp, and refreshing mouthfeel. lots of sharp biterness left on the palate. light on the palate, i wouldve guessed more like 5%. drinks very easily, exspecially during the summer.

im not really a huge fan of pilsners or lagers in general, but i definatly have respect for this one. has a very nice hoppy bite too it. definatly try this if you can find it. just as good if not better than pilsner urquell IMHO.

A very hazy beer for a pils. nice gold/orangey color with one finger of head that fades quickly. lots of bready and lager yeast smells backed up by a good hop profile. mild sweetness from pils malt upfront, definitely taste the variety of hops used and finishes with some nice spiciness. Feels a little thin for what I was expecting. An enjoyable drink. Not a classic Pilsner but they are trying to be. enjoy

Thanks to mikesgroove for this one! Made it easy to get this style off my list.

A: Pours a hazy orange/light amber color with a one finger slightly off white head full of very fine bubbles. Head settles down to a thin layer of bubbles along the top. Nice sticky lacing.

S: Very grassy with a nice hop aroma, slightly citrusy, but not over the top at all. There is also some lemon and a little but of peppery spice.

T: Starts off with a little bit of a bready malt taste. Overall it has a very pilsner like flavor profile with a nice hop addition. Very grassy and floral hops, some lemon and a little bit of orange. The pepper shows up again on the finish.

M: Slightly higher than medium bodied, definitely a little thicker than expected, but very crisp.

O: Really liked this one, has a nice mouthfeel and tasted very fresh. My first sampling of this style, and it came off kind of like a hoppy pilsner, sort of similar to DFH My Antonia, but certainly not as hoppy.

Pours a slightly murky gold. Visible carbonation and a medium sized, persistent head. Smell is somewhat unique. Very floral, sweet and mellow. Taste is immediately bitter hops. Herbal hop finish. A very subtle cakey sweetness rounds it out although it's really just a background note to the hops. Still it adds a really nice unique note to this beer that I really like. Full bodied and well carbonated. Very easily drinkable. I really love a good pils (or keller bier). And I've enjoyed some other American takes on some of these German styles (like Victory's Prima Pils). This is perhaps the best example of this- really great stuffl.

Poured from the bottle into a Nonic. Mug not available such is life!

A real kind of thick gold out of the pour, gives a very large three finger head. Real nice retention with great thick head quality. Body is a cloudy dense looking mix between twenty four carat gold, and pale amber hues. Good lacing. This looks real delicious.

Very unique smelling bouquet here. Faint orangey fruit but with malt density. A very clean sensation off this beer. A faint spicey grass hop also, very mouthwatering in sensation. Borderline into wet hop territory. OOOoo there's clove spice on this and lemon, feels so good together.

Taste is quite interesting. A somewhat syrup body that gives way to pleasant hop grass. Tastes of bread and hop on the finish which is soft and chewy. Dense in the palate, feels very full and big. Taste is a bit quick and disappearing though, but still very enjoyable. Wonderful tolerable feel.

Overall this is a great enjoyable beer and one to have again some day for sure! My first for this style and this is a winner right here! Very tolerable alcohol level and hardly noticeable, before I knew how much I was enjoying it, I wanted more and it was all gone! She went fast. Delicious!

A: Pours a finger thick head. Too cloudy for a true pilsener style. A Golden brown straw color. Good lacing.

S: Sweet caramel malt aroma and sharp hops. The bottle smelled a bit skunked.

T: Very strong on the specialty malts with a lot of biscuity taste. It tastes more like an ale than a lager. The delicate grainy tastes in a typical pilsener are covered up by too many grassy hops. Nice smooth aftertaste.

M: Dries the palate. Thin and crisp.

D: Easily drinkable.

I was disappointed with this beer because it lacked many of the classic qualities of a czech pisener. Too much biscuit malt and hops ruined the style. A royal smack in the face to the true czech pilsner style.

On tap at Al's of Hampden on 2/3/11.

A - Clear pale golden, straw-colored liquid with a slight haze and slim white ring with a wispy patch on top that receded fairly quickly but deposited some stringy lace around the glass.

S - Grassy, herbal and floral notes with a biscuity, bready malt character. Aroma is clean with plenty of hop character.

T - Assertive grassy hops up front with an herba; kick in the middle through the backend. Biscuity malt and lightly toasted grains provide a bit of sweetness. Finishes with a crisp hop bite.

M - Medium bodied with quite an oily texture and moderate carbonation. Finish is dry and crisp with fairly aggressive long-lasting hop bitterness that lingers on the palate for a while.

D - Very solid and much better on tap versus the bottle I reviewed some time ago. On tap is definitely the way to go with pilsners. Pilzilla is nice and hoppy!

A - A brilliant and bright golden yellow body with some clarity and visable carbonation...a small, white, one finger head forms and quickly becomes a wispy cap...some lacing is left

S - The nose isn't overpowering...I detect some hop aromas, bready malts, and some sweetness

T - All the flavors are surprisingly balanced here...at first you come upon a slightly floral aspect...I'm guessing this is from the hops...that flows into a well rounded earthy flavor that has bready malts present...there is a blast of sweet caramel that coats the earthiness and that breaks way to a hoppy finish that isn't too bitter

M - Light bodied...well carbonated, crisp, refreshing, proper bitterness

D - As I mentioned, I thought the flavors were really well balanced...I was expecting pilsner flavors here...which I got...with a little more hops added...this one was easy to drink

I had this on tap at Al's of Hampden - served chilled in a standard pint.
4 4 4.5 4 4.5
The color is mildly hazed golden with visible carbonation and thin white cap w/ tight bead. There is a semi-thin film of lace that collects. The smell is very good with the fragrance of noble hops and some subtle malty aromas which conjure pilsner and some toasted elements with mild spice in the aroma and light floral accent w/ mild bready notes from the yeast. The feel is relatively high in resinous hop texture w/ mildly bitter w/ slight nutty back and semi-dry finish. The light alcohol adds to the complexity and gives a slight pils texture with moderately high carbonation.

The flavor is like a hybrid keller/Imperial pils with strong hops and light spice with mild floral elements and light lemony aspect. The taste is mildly acidic and gently bitter with herbal qualities pretty prominet. and slight tinges of yeast in the flavor give a gentle musty taste which blends fine with the tangy/leafy hop flavor and toastiness of the malt. There is a mellow fruit element in the background. The pils is highly drinkable to me, Keller, Imperial or otherwise it has the things I enjoy from standard pilsners only moreso.

Pours an electic hazy yellow with a slight off white head which gives way to some spotty lacing. The aroma is of grassy notes with some lemon and citrus and a touch of breadiness. The taste is of grass and floral hops with a slight hint of sweetness to it. The mouthfeel is moderately carbonated. Drinkability is good a nice balance and a some and easy drink. The taste has enough complexity to keep you interested.
