On tap at Voodoo Brewing Company in Meadville, PA.

Pours a fairly dark black, with a small, delicate creamy head, and a lot of lacing.

Smells quite bodacious- rich, earthy coffee, maple syrup, and chocolate. Exactly as advertised, but quite aromatic.

Voodoo knows how to get a ton of flavor out of adjuncts without bumping up the ABV. This is only 5.2%, which boggles my mind. It tastes much stronger- not in alcohol, but just in pure flavor. It's very bold. The coffee flavor is quite bitter and earthy, almost like coffee grounds, slightly nutty, and the maple flavor is not super cloying as it can be, it adds another layer of earthiness, slightly sweet. There's also dark chocolate bitterness that gets more perceptible as the beer warms up. The roasted malt flavor is also very strong as well.

This is medium bodied, very full for the ABV, with a creamy, smooth and delicious mouthfeel.

This is quite an impressive beer.

First had: on tap at Voodoo

Poured a dark brown-black with a nice tan head resting on top; decent retention and a bit of lacing. Aroma was roasty, nutty, obvious coffee notes. Rich coffee in the taste, again, roasty and nutty, and I got an herbal and almost tea-like sensation in the finish. Body was medium, maybe a bit thin for a stout of this kind, but the robust flavor compensated. Good brew overall.

Limited brew on tap at Voodoo

Pours a deep opaque brownish black, tan lacing for a head.

Smells of roasted coffee and a hint of nutty hop bitterness.

Flavor is of roasted coffee, black chocolate, oat malt, a hint of maple and some hazelnut.

Medium to full body with a light tingle of carbonation on the tongue.

Solid drinkable stout, great flavor and body for the abv, definitely worth trying if you can get to the pub. It's a pub-only release, at least for now.

Draft offering at Voodoo served in a shaped pint glass. The brew appears black in color with some lighter brown clarity seen around the edges. A ruby hint of coloration is noted around the edges when held to the light. A finger of khaki head rests atop.

The aroma is quite roasty with a mild suggestion of molasses and vanilla sweetness that blends to more of a caramel or toffee touch. Strong espresso character and lots of almost burnt roastiness.

The flavor is bitter and roasted quite remeniscent of fresh espresso blended with earth and hints of tobacco. Some vanilla and toffee to caramel are noted first before an aftertaste more like molasses evolves.

This is a medium to lighter bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. By voodoo stout standards this is a "little guy" but it packs quite a hearty, bitter roasted punch of character. A complex and drinkable brew for ~5%.

I am not a fan of lower alcohol stouts. I found this session beer extremely easy to drink with nice malty over tones.

On tap at the barrel room release. Dark brown pour with tight brown head. Nose is heavy coffee with light roast. Taste has coffee light roast and oatmeal with faint chocolate and fairly toasty bitter finish. Body is light with strong carb and lingering bitterness.

Appearance: A fairly black color with a creamy brown head

Smell: Coffee, vanilla

Taste: Coffee, vanilla, roasted malts

Mouthfeel: Pretty light body for a stout but goes dowm smooth and is refreshing. Moderate bitterness and bitterness throughout

Overall: This is quite a good surprise, as i wasnt expecting much. I get a balance of coffee, vanilla, and roasted malts. Its not great, but its a solid coffee stout with some character.

Review from notes. Consumed on “Barrel Release Day” March 23, 2013. I waited in line for hours for the privilege to purchase one of the first cases of the bottle release. Before being called up to purchase my case I enjoyed several of these beers on tap. I took specific notes for each of them and I will finally upload their reviews here on my beeradvocate account. Poured into a clean but opaque plastic cup while in line outside the brewery waiting for the release. I am glad to say that I really did have it for breakfast!

A Great, fluffy head over a dark copper body that does not let all light through. 4.0

S Barley malt forward with coffee notes as well. Inviting is the word. 4.5

T Follows straight from the nose. Nice barley centric beer with coffee notes. Really pleasing. I could not think of a better way to start out the day for the barrel release! 4.5

M Moderate to big feel, appropriate to the style and the intention. 4.5

D/O I specifically recall that it was highly drinkable. This is another in a long line of excellent offerings at Voodoo which a long time ago was established as my favorite brewery. 4.5
