Review from notes. Consumed on “Barrel Release Day” March 23, 2013. I waited in line for hours for the privilege to purchase one of the first cases of the bottle release. Before being called up to purchase my case I enjoyed several of these beers on tap. I took specific notes for each of them and I will finally upload their reviews here on my beeradvocate account. Notes from the board within the brewery: “Curt’s blend of Big Black Voodoo Daddy and Black Magick Aged in Pappy Van Winkle barrels.” Poured from Firkin into a snifter.

A Awesome, creamy head that I did not expect from a beer with such a high ABV (13%!) over an absolutely BLACK body that lets no light through. The look cannot be improved. 5.0

S Awesome bourbon, dark roast malt smell that cannot be improved in my opinion. Really, I repeatedly sniffed this beer and really just enjoyed the smell. I cannot see how it could be improved. 5.0

T Unbelievable bourbon notes, wonderful dark roast malt. Really folks, this is the zenith of the style. Sure, I was already and easy mark for Barrel Aged beers but I am telling you, this is really exceptionally good. It make all of the sacrifices worth it today. 5.0

M Smooth as silk which is not easy with all of the wonderful goodness in the taste. It also cannot be improved. 5.0

D/O Might be surprised to know that the drinkability is not that high. Don’t get me wrong, this is a world class beer but the heat of alcohol is apparent and one could not have more than ...say... two of these. Overall, again, world class version of the style. 5.0

Notes: I may be repeating here but what a special treat this was to enjoy from the firkin today. Wow!

Served on tap at House Of 1000 Beers

A - Dark black/brown in appearance, thin and very little tan head.
S - Big sweet bourbon smell, some smoked hickory chips, dried cherries, baking chocolate, and a little sweet malt.
T - Has the alcohol flavor, but no burn, sweet cherries and some chocolate, a touch of mild smoke, but really nice smooth bourbon flavor.
M - Smooth, rich and very sweet, but well bodied, no real carbonation though.
O - Enjoyable, but a sipper on a good winter day is what this is best for.

On tap at the barrel room release. Pour is jet black with brown head. Nose is bourbon forward, sweet rich malt, milk chocolate and light vanilla with some light charred wood behind. Taste follows, lots of bourbon and wood with rich malt, a touch sweet but still very rich chocolate cake notes and rich malt flavor. Medium body an light carbonation with a smooth creamy texture.

Draft offering at Voodoo. This was described as "Curt's blend of Big Black Voodoo Daddy and Black Magick aged in Pappy Van Winkle barrels for 15 months." Im not gonna lie, I was excited to try these draft/cask exclusives. It was a big determining factor in my attendance of the bottle release.

The brew was served in a Voodoo barrel room collection snifter. Very dark brown to black in color with a thin tan cap that was quick to receed. Some spotty lace clings to the glass and a swirl revives a thin film atop.

The smells is straight bourbon. Suggestions of sweet coconut, caramel, toffee and vanilla. Pretty much all the awesome character you hope to extract in a barrel aged brew. Some raw solvent alcohol is present providing almost a tangy aspect as well.

The flavor of this brew is a bit of an ass kicker. Strong alcohol flavors emerge with maybe a touch of solvent feeling booze. More of an aggressive, raw oak and alcohol feel are felt here instead of the smoothness you might have expected based off the aroma. Lingering flavors of bitter burnt grain are left inside the mouth a bit earthy and oaky with a mild tang component.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. The alcohol is a major player in this brew's profile which is to be expected considering black magick is a beast in itself and the addition of PVW barrel treatment just augments that booze further. I liked this offering, I liked it a lot. But a 7-8 oz pour was more than enough and provided enough of a sampling for me to know possibly what to expect of the barrel room collection bottles.

First had: on tap at Voodoo

This one's not for greenhorns. Dark brown-black pour with a small tan head that wisped away after a moment or so. Aroma of dark malts, chocolate, stiff bourbon, dark fruits. After that, the flavor was no surprise: all things dark--malts, chocolate, fruits--bourbon--soaked wood, some notes of tobacco and burnt marshmallow. Smooth, full mouthfeel, but still plenty hefty with booze. Quite enjoyable overall, but probably would've gone down better if I hadn't been awake for 48 hours straight before drinking it.
