First had: on tap at Pin's, Media, PA

I've been debating opening my bottle, but then I saw Pin's had it on tap, so I figured I'd go for that option first. Served in a 5.5oz. mini-snifter for $3.50...can't beat that.

Hazy orange-amber pour with a thin white head that receded to a tidy ringlet. I'll admit, I didn't expect much from this beer, but to my surprise, it was really quite good. The nose was loaded with apples. I've had beers aged on Laird's before, but this may be among those that have been most pronounced with the apple aroma and flavor. Lesser notes of oak and fusel alcohol. Not what I expected at all from a barrel-aged tripel. More apples in the taste, fresh juice, spicy cider, Belgian yeast, with a touch of caramel sweetness, and an oaky aftertaste. Very hot with booze, but also very tolerable, as the flavor was quite rich and full. Medium-full body, boozy yet smooth mouthfeel, moderate carbonation. Overall, very good, a notable improvement on the base beer; knocked me off guard. I'll hang on to my bottle for a bit longer and maybe break it out at a tasting.

Thanks to stakem for the share -enjoyed in a small tulip.

The color is dark golden with slight haziness and light white head that collapses to a ring.
The color is amber with very fine bead. Smell is very intense malt with caramel and yeast woodiness with a mild spice note. The feel is full almost honey-like with warming up front and lots of alcohol with drying quality almost leaves the mouth without moisture earthy texture.

The taste is rich with yeast and almost a funky toast/woody flavor with slight sweetness which fades fast to an alcoholic taste which is floral and almost peppery with drying herbal note as if finishes intensely dry. This is a very strong and intense tripel/strong Belgian amber/pale with a balance more toward the woody and alcoholic than malt and yeast. I like it but would only drink the amount sampled a full bottle would be hard to stomach with all the booziness.

Went up to the brewery last night. Chatted it up with the head brewer, Kurt. I'm heading out, and he has another bag with a bottle next to the one I had already purchased. I get out to my car, and pull out this beaut. What a bro. Tossed me this for free. Bottled 8/30/13.

A- Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Voodoo snifter/tulip hybrid, split three ways. Very small. head did not stick around for long. White ring on top of the beer. Liquid caramel. Not cloudy, but not translucent. No lacing on the glass.

S- So much barrel characters. I really like the aromatics on this beer. Dominated by apples, liquor, and wood. The barrel character on this beer is great. I only wish more from the base beer came through. Some dry straw scent comes through. Really nice.

T- Doesn't taste enough like a beer. That's what is holding this beer back. Barrel character is evident, though not quite as much as the nose. A lot of wood is coming through. Not very complex, though. Some mild fruit flavor, like apples and slight banana. Not amazing, but not horrible.

M- I like the mouthfeel. Lighter end of medium. Not much carbonation to speak of. Goes down smooth.

O- The nose shone on this beer. Wish the flavor was a little more balanced. Overall a pretty good beer. Can't wait till I get to try some of their future barrel offerings.

This poured a grainy red cider like hue with a bright white fizzy head.

The scents are so varied with maple, green Apple, sorghum, figs, apricots and caramel malt. The only thing holding it back is the ton of booziness you have to wade through to find the aromas.

The tastes are varied but seem to bee completely different. I found a lot of honey sweetness accompanied by a candied honey like a Bit O' Honey candy. The flavors then turn sour with an Apple cider and a wine taste. Again the booze tempers the overall experience.

The feel is sprite, light and misery but plenty smooth.

What a bizarre beer this turned out to be. The Apple brandy barrels did a lot to create great flavors but in turn probably added the booze that kept this from being great.
