I have popped into here a few times during my last 4 years in Long Beach but never really paid much attention until I dropped by last Thursday for a LongBeachHopHead weekly gathering.
Situated above the Belmont Athletic Club, a flight of stairs outside the ground floor entrance to the BAC (for the more health conscious) leads to the upstairs bar. Once inside, a small runway leads past some tables to the right and the entrance to the balcony which overlooks Belmont Shores Second Street and is a very cool place to people watch. To the left the unusual sight of a full size Golf Driving game thingy takes up an alcove. Past this area the main room opens up into a Sports Bar like interior. The dark wood bar counter sits in the far right hand side corner, above which sits several TVs playing a variety of sports channels. A larger projection style TV sits against the back wall as you enter but that was no working. To the right a wall is covered in small plaques which list all of the current members that have managed all of the beers on sale and entered into the Hall of Hops. To you immediate left large glass windows offer views of the Belmont Athletic Club working up a sweat playing Squash, whilst an internal door to the right of these windows offers access for the thirsty ones to grab a beer afterwards. The interior is basic but utilitarian; a few large high round tables line the Hall of Hops wall whilst the middle of the floor has the more staid 4 seater tables.
A chalkboard above the bar lists the current guest beer offerings and food specials. No hard stuff here, so the Beer range is the highlight of the available libations and rather expansive at Seventy, give or take a brace. This is by far the best quantitative range in Belmont Shores, and only bettered by the Yard House in downtown Long Beach. They even had Widmer Red during my visit, not one that I have seen before. 16 taps in total, 25% on the front bar sports a varied range from the Big Boys, whilst the rest of them are situated behind the bar with regular imports and domestics and a few local craft brews. The 16 draft beers usually include 4 or 5 rotating guest beers, as the varied range of tap handles decorating the back of the bar attest to, these guest beers are listed on the chalkboard. Behind the bar a double-door cooler hides an additional 54 bottled beers from some 15 countries. Ask the Bar man for a Hall of Hops Passport Card, try all the 70 beers and you get a T-Shirt and a plaque on the Hall of Hops wall. Surprisingly, the only decent hoppy beer I found during my visit with the LongBeachHopHeads was Anderson Valley Hot Oppin IPA in bottles, and that soon sold out as the LBHHs devoured it. Decent enough Pub Grub at good prices does enough to make eating here a distinct possibility should the drinking session start to take its toll. Service was solid, helpful and even went to so far as to be honest enough to not give me one beer that, quote Smells like a skunks ass and tastes worse as it started to run off. Happy hour runs 4pm-6pm and the prices are usually a $1 less than the norm plus cheap food and snacks.
Definitely the one place to stop for a brew in Belmont Shores, the ability to drink beer on the long thin balcony and watch the World go by is worth the visit alone but the 70 odd beers on sale also help. Whilst it has the quantity, the uber beer geek may find the list a tad pedestrian, hence the 3.5 mark for selection. Despite protracted discussions amongst fellow LongBeachHopHeads (which include a few BAs) we all agreed that this place is worthy of BeerFly, but that it would be nice to see more depth of character here, and definitely more hops and IPAs, a rather glaring omission given the high profile Hall of Hops I have to say!
Last Visit: Thursday 9th March, 2006.
