Pours black with hints of garnet at the edges and a full 2 fingers of fluffy and slightly rocky light brown head with good retention and lacing. Aroma is of chocolate with mere hints of dark malts. Taste is dominated by dark, toasty, and toasted malts that conjure semi-sweet chocolate with a moderately sweet finish. Light-medium body and moderate carbonation yield a slightly creamy mouthfeel. Overall a good beer, I was agreeable to the flavors here; I could have used a bit more complexity in the aroma and flavors but found this enjoyable none the less.

Poured into snifter. The color is a deep, dark brown, virtually black, with a thick, creamy tan head a lacing. It's an attractive pour. The smell is chocolate forward with malt and toffee. The taste, however, is quite bitter, almost sour, with a distinct burnt coffee. I don't discern much chocolate or toffee, as I expected to. This is a medium-bodied ale without the chewiness I like. At 4.6 ABV, it is sessionable but I can't imagine drinking more than one. To be charitable, this ale may be better fresh but I would expect a "chocolate" ale to age better than this. Overall, this ale doesn't measure up with its peers from Founders, Great Lakes, etc.

I am in the process of clearing out some of the the interminable backlog here at Chez Woody. My thanks to The Friendly Greek Bottle Shop for being an ongoing resource of singles!

I Pop!ped the cap and almost achieved an inverted pour until the head really started coming up like I was losing control. I backed off and allowed it to settle somewhat, having put half of the bottle's contents into the glass. #TheOldLady hates when i do this, characterizing it as "making a big mess", but I like the release of esters. Settling, I ended up with two fingers of dense, deep-tan/light-brown head with good retention. Color was easy on this one - Opaque/Black (SRM = 44), since there was precisely zero light penetration. It looked like a glassful of ink! Nose smelled of dark, semi-sweet chocolate. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was smoky, chocolaty, and very reminiscent of brownies. Damn, but this was good! Finish was semi-dry with the bitterness of the dark malt and the semi-sweetness that the chocolate malt imparted. I usually eschew sweet beers, but this was not sweet at all. That said, I would probably only want it as a dessert beer.

Not much chocolate or coffee. All over the place for me. Body and flavors dont match what it seems like they want to do here
