This was poured into a pilsener glass.
The appearance was a ruddy burnt brown color with a two finger white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute. Light stringy lacing.
The smell had some rich sweet chocolate malts, light bready to biscuity tones and a light raisin to blend nicely.
The taste was moderately sweet with burnt crisp coffee tones to balance underneath. Lingering bready aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about a light to medium in body. Lager yeast definitely helps to smooth out and lead to a light creaminess rolling over my tongue nicely.
Overall, rated to the Munich Dunkel lager style, this one works and also is good to me. Probably pair well with some coffee cake. I'd have again.

One of the best black beers I've ever had. A great level of oakiness and a mild fruit flavor that remind me of the similar Xingu, but the flavor seems to be a bit stronger here.

Nice very drinkable a little bit of chocolate but not too much going on but had some complexity and was very flavorful for a lager Didn't curl my toes but no complaints.

02/27/13 On tap at Rattle n Hum, NYC. At first blush I though the chocolate was out of place in a 'lager' but soon learned, no matter what you want to call it this is a fine brew.

On draft at Capone's. Pours a deep black/brown with tan head. Mild chocolate aroma. Taste is mellow chocolate and coffee with a subtle sweet malt and roasted malt finish. I really felt this lucious brew drank like a porter so I checked out the Cricket Hill website and there it is listed as an ale: "Nocturne Chocolate Ale". Therefore I have to assume the Beer Advocate listing is in error and this is an American style porter. As such it is outstanding on draft and worth seeking out.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of chocolate, some coffee as well. Taste is chocolatey, some coffee, drinks more like a stout than a lager. feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall, not what I expected, but a pretty good beer.

This is a good lager. Quite robust though, and almost like a rauchbier or smoked beer. Consistent and smooth. Nose brings a somewhat chocolate character. Would probably be heavier than most would expect, almost reaching into porter or stout territory. Well, not almost. It does. Regardless, it's a nice beer.

Purchased at RSVP in Maine on sale for $3.99 a bomber and poured into a Portsmouth Brewing tulip

A-dark black with a one finger head although poured too cold which could have affected it. Ruby red hues around the edges where the light hits it.

S-dark roasts of chocolate and a hint of light roasted coffee.

T-chocolate malt with a hint of chalkiness. Roasty and smooth. Very well done for this style. Very clean and crisp.

M-smooth and medium bodied with perfect carbonation for this style which is low/medium carbonation

Overall this is a well done beer. I would have and did think it was a porter when I first had it and liked it then. Now I see its a lager and give it more credit. My first cricket hill I have ever enjoyed.

Appearance: Opaque beautiful blackish-brown in color with a 1" tan head that laces extremely nicely, and has large bubbles. Beautiful color, as good as they come in black lager.

Smell: the mild malt sweetness is pleasant, appealing, inviting. Roasty, but not over powering. A winter beer.

Taste: Of course malt, but subtle. Less cloying than brown ales, with some herb, earth, chocolate, grass, and hint of bread. Bitterness moderate, fresh tasting, and with nice sweet-bitter-earthy balance. A great session beer. Approachable, will be great with food, tonight shrimp cocktail and sphagetti with meatballs. Stands up to any foods. A great seafood dinner or roast beer. Also great with cheese.

Mouthfeel: medium-to-full bodied, a little creamy. Crisp, sessionable, satisfying. Aftertaste short-lived. Leaves one in a good earthy not too sweet place.

Overall: this is a drinkable dark lager that can be a session beer. Great NJ Brew! worth trying out. I will definitely get more. If I am to drink dark lager, this would be near the top of my list. I could see drinking this and surprising my friends with it.

I had the pleasure of attending the Cricket Hill Brewery in Fairfield last week. The man in charge of the brewery, Rick i believe his name is, really knows how to draw a crowd. Sure the crowd looked like they had just left Comic Con but overall everyone was very nice and it was a good time.

One of the beers on tap at the Brewery was their dark lager (nocturne). On tap i thought it was pretty good so i decided to pick up a 750 at the local bottle king and see how it would taste out of the bottle.

Warning:Pour gently, there is a lot of head.Too much head in my opinion.

But once the head settle you have a delicious dark lager in front of you. Feels smooth in the mouth and while not overwhelming with flavor is just perfect for those November nights where your along sitting on the internet(eh?).

Starts with a huge off-white head on a murky, dark brown beer. Excellent retention and lacing in the glass. Aromas are malty and sweet, followed by some roasted malt notes.

The taste brings to mind a dark, french roast coffee initially, plus malty caramels and chocolate. Earthy hops give a light bitter element. Medium bodied, with a crisp and clean lager mouthfeel. Finishes slightly dry and with the coffee roast flavors noted before.

Overall a tasty balance of roasted/toasted notes in a not-too heavy lager beer.

22 oz. a very dark brown pour, some amber around the edges. Thin off white layer on top.

Aroma, a lot of chocolate, some peat, leather.

Taste, Some molasses and sassafras. Some malty toffee and chocolates, almost a milk chocolate like quality. A dry cocoa and noble type hop finish.
Quite dry. Feels like the high carbonation is hurting the flavor profile some.

Lighter bodied and drinkable, but I found the carbonation prickly and a bit distracting.
Fix that and this is a winner.

A: very large head on this one with excellent retention on a clear amber brown body

S: simple aroma with toasted caramel malts, rye breads, musty hops.

T: smokey and roasted malts with strong coffee presence. flavor is good but the soft drink level of carbonation is distracting. breads and light spices.

M: lighter than expected with very very high carbonation. semi dry finish and crisp.

Overall: drinkable and fairly flavorful but not really a great representative of the style.

A - The cap comes off to a quick gusher that continues to foam up even after it is gently poured into the glass. The result is a massive, five finger head of foam that overtops the glass like a mushroom cloud. The body is a hazy dark brown and the head retention is epic.

S - An aroma of roasted malt with some nutty caramel and spicy notes of pepper and lavender.

T - Bready malt up front with some caramel and brown sugar. Some lightly roasted notes in the middle and a finish of dry caramel and more bready malt.

M - Medium body, very high carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - Based on the over the top carbonation, I assumed that this beer would taste infected, but it shows no off flavors or other signs of infection. It is a little on the dry side, which may be related to the carbonation, but otherwise fairly good.

poured a solid black with a foamy off-white head. aromas of yeast, bananas, toasted grains, tobacco and coffee. tastes like a watered down stout (roasted grains, caramel, chocolate). totally not what i was expecting. a little bready tasting and some metallic hints throughout the pour.

very refreshing, crisp (could be a summer/spring beer), light on the palate with subtle toasted hints, dry finish.

i was expecting a shit beer honestly. i sent one off to a friend in wisconsin and he was not a fan of it. maybe it got better with aging, it's been sitting at room temp for about 3 months. the very subtle flavors honestly make it a great beer for any season.

Not really sure of what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by this offering. It's caramelish, toasty, chocolatey/cocoa-ish, and a touch roasty. There are some nice floral and leafy hops to it, and it initially balances quite well. Unfortunately, the roasty edge builds on the palate a bit, thus accentuating the bitterness a bit as well. It finishes dry with a coffee character and solid bitterness. The first quarter of the glass was great, it lost luster half-way, and then it became softer and more enjoyable as it warmed. The roastiness is a little bit much given the malt component, but that makes it unique. Probably worth trying.

Pours dark brown with hints of ruby and practically no head. The nose has a very slight malt element, but not much. There is little more than a hint of roasted malt in the flavor and this offering is especially thin in the finish.

Took a chance on this beer b/c of the relatively high BA rating, but this one is a big downer.

Pours a dark, somewhat hazy Coca-Cola brown with a fairly thick pale tan head that leaves some good lacing. Malty aroma has a smoky overtone and a hint of caramel. Flavor has a malty core with smoky, caramel and coffee hints. Texture has average, powdery body and just a little fizz, leaving a malty and slightly smoky finish.

Given to me by the brewery's owner (great guy), it pours a very dark amber, almost brown, with hues of ruby on the edges when held up to the light. Has a decent tan head that leaves a thin ring of lacing. The aroma is of roasted malts with a bread like quality. The taste follows the nose with roastiness but also has hints of mild chocolate, which makes this a creamy and very smooth treat. Overall this is a very drinkable brew.

honey color to it though with some darker touches around the sides that served it quite well. Aroma was decent, very sweet with lots of caramel and honey notes as well as lots of touches of nuts as well. Warming almost brings out a touch of fruit now. But the flavor really falls off. It seems as though it comes across musky and stale, the fact that it is flat does not help at all. A wash of bready malts, touches of grain and a hint of caramel all seem to miss and this quasi wheat and fruit note comes in, with a wet cardboard flavor. Not working out at all.

A: The beer is very dark amber in color and poured with a finger high beige head that gradually died down and left a thin ring of bubbles on the surface around the edge of the glass.
S: There are light to moderately strong aromas of roasted malts and brown bread in the nose along with some hints of raisins.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell and has flavors of bready and roasted malts along with notes of chocolate.
M: It feels a bit more than light-bodied and somewhat smooth and creamy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The beer is very sessionable because it’s not very filling, goes down easily and has a low alcohol content. It packs in a lot of aroma and flavor for a beer with a light body.

This is a nocturne. A Which? You know: Frederik fucking Chopin. Anyway, this stuff pours a clear garnet-brown topped by over a finger of dusty light tan foam. The nose comprises light roasted malts, light toffee, mineral water, and a touch of vague fruitiness. The taste holds notes of very light roasted malts, mild cocoa powder, potting soil, dark greens, and a slightly biting herbal bitterness at the end. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a slick feel. Overall, a pretty nice Munich dark, something you don't see too many of in these parts.

Poured into a pilsner glass. This way a low intensity gusher. It took me a good dozen pours to fill my glass.

4.0 A: After much effort I can finally see what what a full glass looks like. Clear dark brown color. Three fingers of beige, frothy head with excellent retention and a good amount of lacing.

3.0 S: Dry roastiness with a touch of burntness. Something along the lines of ginger ale or dish soap and an unidentifiable frutiness. Just a touch of sweet maltiness. Fresh water and overall clean.

4.5 T: Taste is very good. Not quite as roasty as the nose suggests, but roasty nonetheless. No burnt flavors. Rather, a fairly intense chocolate joins the party. Sweet caramel. Grainy malts with a strong neutral maltiness.

4.0 M: Lighter medium body, maybe even as light as a heavier light body. Good carbonation somehow after the multiple pours. A tad bit creamy, smooth, and refreshing.

4.0 D: There's a good amount of flavor in this despite not being an imperial something or other and the components work well together. The nose is a little weird and doesn't quite reflect the taste, but no big deal. This is a good beer after all is said and done.

Nice creamy 1/2 finger head that fades semi slowly with a bit of lacing, semi clear darker brown caramelized brown sugar color.

Nose had a crisp lager, semi sweet toasty malts, light lager fruits, some light fluffy roast and toffee, light pillowy caramel and touch if an herbal fruity hop.

Taste starts with a toasty and light roasty malt, dark light roast, caramel malts, light toasty reddish malts, light creamy porter dark malts, touch of minerality, then light lager flavors, crisp and sweet toasty malts and light fruit, a but of an earthy slight herbal hop and some bitterness, starts semi sweet and dries just a little on the finish, more bitterness and earthy his, as well as a slight astringent and mineral like flavor, lingering dark and roasty porter malts.

Mouth is med bodied, decent carb, semi crisp.

Overall pretty good, nice crisp lager flavors, nice malts both toasty reddish malts and darker roasty porter malts, finish could have been a bit drier and light minerality flavor from the dark malts and light herbal hops.

An almost opaque body that becomes blood red when put up to the light topped by off-white head that retreats to the rim of my glass. Black cherries and faint wheat in the nose. Tastes of light cereal, dark fruit (black cherries and prunes), cola, faint echo of caramel, and a light bitterness accompanied by a spicy hop toward the finish that rides out the drink. Light in body with light carbonation. It's easy on the belly and contains a great balance between sweet malt and a light hop presence. An interesting beer fit for hot nights, chilling outside with a cigar.
