This beer tastes like burnt waffles, not what I expect from a Smoked Beer. Some nonsmoked dark beers have the same burnt taste, this beer just doesn't taste smoked to me. The bottle I got was from the brewery but was over a year old when I bought it--they had aged it. I didn't like the Alaskan Smoked Amber after I aged it either. This beer was very thin for a porter but had a good smell and nice malt and hop flavor under the burnt waffle. My friend once puked on a different smoked porter because it was too smoky--I don't think he'd have a problem with this one. Because it's mild it could be a good introduction to the style but for smoke fans, you need something more hardcore.

Appearance – This one is a nice, heavy brown in color with a lot of sediment. The head came up beautifully and lasted for quite some time, lacing the inside of my glass as it slowly went down.

Smell – The light roasted malt aroma is covered in some good smoke. The smoke is strong and smells like barbequed pork but doesn’t completely dominate the taste. I can pick up some rich fruity notes as well.

Taste – Ah, this is a good one. The smoke is very mature and the pork ribs we put on the grill at the smell are now fully blackened on the outside. The malts are rich and juicy, nicely roasted and complimented with some light fruits. The bitter malts and smoke linger at the finish.

Mouthfeel – This one is medium to full-bodied and bitter in back of the mouth. The alcohol is light but noticeable and the smoke fills your lungs.

Drinkability – This is not a giant Porter and it’s certainly not hopped to death like a lot of efforts at the style here in the PacNW. This fella just goes about his business in quite the orderly fashion. It hits all of the style requirements of a Porter and of a Smoked Beer and is very nicely done.

Comments – The bottle here indicates that it is “bottle conditioned” and dates the batch to April 2002. That's going on three years for this guy and he held up just fine.
