I'd never heard of Lancaster Brewery Company so I was intrigued by Black stout. Poured into a tulip. Aroma was sweet chocolate, sugar, and malts. I was quickly let down. Taste was fair, but didn't live up. Good roast malts, sweet chocolate, and slight berry tones, but it fades fast.

This is a true English Stout. Some good characteristics, but for the price tag, I won't be picking up Lancaster Black again.

Bottle

Thanks for waiting for me to open this, Tony!

Dark brown throughout with some clarity near the edges and a very thin light brown head. This doesn't leave much in the way of lace down the glass.

The aroma is mediocre at best, with some mild roast presence and a little bit of dark bread crust. Average.

The flavor is mild and below average. There's a very mild roast component, a hint of bread, but this tastes more like dirty water than anything else.

Awful mouthfeel--thin as can be, water-like, mineral heavy, and somewhat metallic. This is where this beer fails.

Poor.

A 500ml clear glass bottle with a BB of June 2014, so it's a bit out of date. Hope it's still good. Picked up ages ago from a supermarket. Described on the label as an award-winning traditional stout.

A: Poured into a dimpled pint mug. A dark chestnut-brown hue that appears pitch black in the glass. Yields a large head of creamy beige foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Lovely lacing.

S: Aroma of roasted malt with hints of burnt grain, ground coffee, subtle molasses, a twinge of cocoa, earthy yeast and faint stewed leaves.

T: Tastes of rich roasted malt with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of burnt grain, dark malt, roasted coffee, mild molasses, a hint of cocoa, earthy yeast and stewed leaves. Well-attenuated, followed by a strident, malt-driven bitterness upon swallowing.

M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with effervescent carbonation and a slightly insubstantial body for the style. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of bitter roasted malt, burnt notes and stewed leaves.

O: A decent stout, and certainly more characterful than some of their other brews. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are replete with roasted malt and coffee notes. A solid bitterness rounds it off nicely. Body is OK but could stand to be a shade creamier. Goes down easily enough - worth sampling if you have the chance.

16.9 oz bottle served in a Unibroue snifter.

Pours near black, but actually a very dark, clear mahogany. The head is sudsy and has rather limited duration.

A good bit of coffee in the appealing aroma, that also hints of brandy. Less coffee in tasting where hints of molasses and dark chocolate appear. Lasting finish features dark malt and light coffee.

M: very smooth but medium-light body to too thin. Low carbonation.

O: an acceptable stout with a fine aroma.

From the 25 fl. oz bottle. Sampled on November 22, 2011. It pours dark mahogany-brown with some nice clarity, an adequate head, a little lacing. I think I expected something more opaque. The aroma is definitely pungent but not in the aromas typical to a stout. It is more like sweet malts, molasses, and black licorice. The body was thin to medium. Sweet on the front end but somewhat bitter on the end. I think I would liken it more to an Irish Black Lager than a Stout.

16 oz bottle split and poured into a Piraat tulip. 4.6% ABV, no date. With only 4 reviews it must be pretty new/fresh methinks.

Thanks to TheDTrain for sharing this one!

A - Mostly black in color with a sliver of ruby showing through, this beer had a full, dense light tan head. Great retention and a ton of sticky lace.

S - Rich sweet caramel with cocoa, mocha, lactose, bittersweet chocolate, roasted malt, and mild English hops. A full nose.

T - Roasted bitter malts with strong bitter English hops that defy the nose. Cocoa and mocha with accompanying dryness pulls through.

M - Very dry and medium-light bodied and heavily carbonated, this brew has a heavy roasted acrid bitter finish.

D - A decent brew but not something I'd want to have a whole lot of. This would be much better from a cask.

Dark, ruby in direct light and around edges. Frothy tan head adorns, lacing nicely.

Bit of roasted malts, and the smallest hint of sweetness.

Taste is roasted malts, slightly bitter, and even slighter chocolate sweetness.

Feel is light in body, a little creamy, and smooth. Slightly elevated carbonation.

Very low ABV, and nothing bad about this make this incredibly drinkable. However, nothing about this is exceptionally out of the ordinary, so I'm not sure how often I'd revisit this.

Ebony with cherry highlights when backlit and a slight sand colored head that shrinks to a skim of foam and leaves sheets of fine lace on the glass. Dark chocolate and roasty and smokey malt notes in the aroma. Cocoa, anise and smoked malt with faint herbal hop bittering. The flavors are well balanced and harmonious if slightly underwhelming. Lighter bodied and smooth. Easy drinking and tasty, a good English session ale.

After reading about this beer I was really looking forward to trying it. It is a Gold Medal winner at SIBA so I am excited that I ahve this one to try.

The beer pours a very pleasant dark brown to amber (when held up to the light). The head is weak and short lived and surprisingly white for a "stout" and the lacing is light to almost non-existent.

The nose is beyond subtle to almost non-existent. It is so weak I can't describe it. I think I smell some vanilla, coffee and malt.

The taste is rather unexpected. I was expecting a stout and instead what I am tasting is more of a black ESB. I really like ESB’s but this is supposed to be a stout so I am rating lower for not meeting my expectations as a stout. Overall the flavor is quite good. It is very bitter up front giving way to intense roasted malt and coffee with some vanilla notes as well. Over all it tastes pretty good. However, in my opinion, this beer is a Stout in Name Only. There is a very strong and lingering bitter aftertaste that is not that pleasant and actually makes me want to drink some water to get rid of it.

The mouthfeel is rather watery as well.

While this is a drinkable beer it is not one that I would buy again. I think the brewer has a good start here. They need to maybe consider taking the stout out of the name and call it a Black ESB. They need to get the flavors a little more balanced. I would consider tweaking the malt to hop ration and dial the hops back just a tiny bit and increase the amount of roasted malt a bit.

I won’t be buying this one again.

Blacker than a night ruled by demons thick off white head.

promising aromas strong roast flavours there, syrup of figs and hemp?

Nice no nonsense stout flavours, rich on the roast with coffee tones slightly sweet and lacking bitterness in the punchline.

Okay mouthfeel if just the tiny einiest bit watery but spot on carb

well worth a poke

A : cleanly labeled bottle. An aggressive pour gives a thin tan head that appears thick on top and weak below. A super dark black color, with outer edges of honey brown. J
Head no completely gone.

S : dark dried fruits are first up, followed by a sweet coffee. The tail end is heavily smoked malt. Sweet and pleasing.

T : a dry roasted flavor with rims of coffee and molasses. The finish is astringent and light, mostly toasted bread and dark chocolate. Hop bitterness transitions the front to back from the center.

M : a little over carbonated it seems. Astringent towards the tail end.

An ok English stout, but lacks depth. Drinkability and appearance are great, but slightly less carb could tone down the astringency for an improvement.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle into a standard pint.

A: Very dark brown. Substantial amount of carbonation collects on the sides of the glass. Pours about a 1 finger, foamy, brownish white head. Settles slowly leaving some sticky, beer ring residue as it does. Plenty of spider web lacing as you drink it down.

S: Dark roasted malt. Hints of licorice and bittersweet chocolate. A nice grainy, baked bread tone.

T: Tastes like it smells. Roasted malt, robust full grainy flavor. Slight cocoa sweetness. Just a little bitter, and a little peaty.

M: Full and robust, but has a bit of a washed out feel. A steely, dry finish that lingers throughout.

D: You can sip, but can pound. Doesn't put up too much resistance.

Atmosphere is pretty solid. Pretty nice appearance. Deep and rich with a full head. Nose is really decent, as well. Nice combination of grain and sweet components. Flavor is full with a subtle sweet character. Feel is a bit washed out and not the best finish. Overall, this is a pretty decent quaff.

Thanks for sharing this, Bobby.

A: Pours a dark brown with a dense khaki colored head.

S: Nice and buttery with a definite acidity to it. A touch of graham cracker, but all I keep smelling is the damn butter. Maybe a bit of roast and dark chocolate.

T: Watery yet still somehow horribly offensive. Shockingly bitter with horrible charred flavors. Prune juice and butter make up a substantial portion of the flavor profile as well. Just appalling.

M: Light bodied, watery, with low carbonation.

O: This was just painful to drink.
