Forschungsbrauerei "Gottfried Jakobs Blonder Bock"
4,50€ / ,5L on tap at the brewery on 22 September 2017

Notes: Listed on the menu as 8.2% ABV. Clear deep amber in color with orange highlights beneath a full head of off-white foam. Excellent head retention and lacing. The aroma is brightly hoppy with floral and herbal notes. It's like rubbing a hop cone between your fingers. If I had to guess I'd go for Hallertauer, and perhaps some Tettnenger. The flavor is malty with both golden caramel and dark caramel, softly toasted bread, honey, and a hint of apple backed by floral, herbal, and spicy hops. A stiff bitterness balances it perfectly and it finishes mainly dry with spicy and herbal hops lingering. It's medium-full in body, and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled, median carbonation. This is definitely one of the hoppiest beers I've had in Germany, and really well-brewed.

Sampled on 05/09.
This is served in a traditional clay maß, plus it has a pretty standard 2" head of foam on top of it...so getting a good look at it pretty much won't happen until you're about 2/3 of the way done. It definitely looked to be darker than other pale bocks I've had, including others on this trip. No real complaints as it's really following tradition with the clay mug. I'll give the visual some leeway because it had a lovely head and the traditional serving vessel has it's own charm.
This beer has a TON of flavor. It has some of the darker bock flavors like caramel and cocoa, but still has the more subtle flavors like honey and toasted grain from a traditional pale bock or marzen.
I had this with another BA and both of our liters disappeared pretty quickly for a bock strength beer. In fact I think we finished before my wife finished her export.
The "experimental brewery" has a hidden gem here and dare I say this beer is about as good of a beer as you'll find anywhere.
It's surprisingly easy to get to, so any Munich tourists should really take the easy S-Bahn ride and visit.
It's like the best of pale and dark bocks rolled into one.

I went out of my way to visit this pub while in Germany a while back. Luckily, I was not disappointed at all by what I found. You can reach this place by doing some research and catching the local transportation from downtown Munich. If you have an hour or two to kill while in Munich, you owe it to yourself to track this place down and visit it. I have to admit the brewery was in a somewhat strange location, but the beer quality and hospitality of the server(s) more than made up for it. The beer was served in a ceramic stein which prevented me from getting a good look at it, so I gave it an "average" appearance. If anything, it seemed to be amber-ish in color. Whatever the case, it tasted phenomenol! Good Lord...how do the Germans do it? This beer was sooo tasty! Only the Germans can make bock beers taste this good. Any out-of-towner visiting the Munich area really should go out of his/her way and visit this place.

After lunch here recently I had a Maß of this, and enjoyed it so much I had another Maß.... Damn straight!!
A rocky, off-white head does a very slow fade, leaving its tracks very evident down the side of the stein. Beneath this topping sits a clear, honey-gold liquid. Nose is light, with malty sweetness, though mildness persists. A touch bready and toasty. Body is a solid medium-plus, and silky smooth on the tongue! Mmmm.... A sip (or 5 or 6) gives a lovely maltiness...toasty, with honey-like sweetness. Smooth and clean from start to end. Light sweetness lingers, and a slight hoppiness at the finish is suggestive of light fruit. Goes down smoothly and easily....love the lingering, light sweetness. Watch out... a verry nice Bock!!
Prosit!!

Original review of 14MAY02: Enjoyed in a ceramic Maß-krug at the brewpub, Sep 2001. Interesting rendition of this style.... enjoyed on tap at their out-of-the-way brewpub in Munchen. Had a light-copperish/golden color, with a fluffy, creamy head. Nose was malty and sweet, but does not come on strong at all. Lovely mouthfeel! Real good body, and verry pleasant over the tongue. Taste is malty, but not in any overpowering way. Fruity flavors evident, including some apple in there, ending a bit dry. Had a liter stein; definitely better flavor as it warmed.
