Dark brown aggressive pour from bottle in pint glass. Tan colored two finger head.

A pleasant wheat smell. Smells nutty and sweet.

A nice balance of wheat and hops. It has a roasted nutty taste. Sweet banana and malts add to the fruitiness.

Medium-bodied and kind of creamy. It's a tasty and drinkable dunkel. Came recommended from Tiffany's.

Appearance: Poured into a Duvel tulip glass. The beer blillows up with a big, thick, tan head that is slightly creamy and slightly rough at the same time. The head is stiff and long lasting atop the dark brownish-red beer. The beer is darker and cloudier than I would expect from a wheat beer. No light comes through even when backlit. This is a very pretty beer to look at.

Smell: Light banana aroma with a sweetness and spiciness covering over a wheaty malt aroma.

Taste: Wow, so many things to describe in this beer. It's tangy, sweet, and spicy all at the same time. There is a chewy maltiness that blends with a candy sweetness and some citrusy flavors reminiscent of tangerines. Other flavors include a light peppery flavor and some clean apple. This beer is sweet all around with a slightly watery middle that I really feel at the top of my palate. The malt flavor mellows towards the end. There are no truly potent flavors in this beer but they all come together well. There is a very light and barely detectable roasty flavor at the end of the of the beer that makes it finish well.

Mouthfeel: Very lively carbonation with a clean, dry, and sandy feel.

Drinkability: Good but not great. For such a dark colored beer the flavor is very light.

Pours a real hazy brown color with a straw hue. Has a biege three inch head with lots of finite carb action.

Has a bready, toasted, nutty, malt smell with banana and bubblegum in the background. With a grassy, resin, and orange hops aroma.

Has a toasted/roasted wheat grain and barley malt taste with caramel and some banana. Lime flavored esters and butter are in the mix.

Medium bodied, buttery and watery/resin feel, fizzy and lively carbonation, with a hint of a chalky finish.

A different taste from a different region in Germany, a good session dunkelwiezen.

Bruised dark cherry with bright orange peel edges. Even though I don't see a whole slew of bubbles, the head rushed up to the glass edge quickly and made me moderate my pour. The cap is lightly toasted almond in color and whipped creamy in consistency. A little more lace would be great, but Dunkle Weisse still looks good enough to drink.

The classic nose keeps things on the right track. Moderately dark wheaty with elements of banana and clove, it's all here. I'm amazed that the beer is as aromatic as it is since I'm still separated from it by two fingers of froth after a spirited second pour.

The flavor is more or less reflective of the nose. The beer tastes like lightly toasted barley and tangy wheat flecked with oven-toasted nuts. The mixture of sweet, sour and bitter (in roughly that order) is nice as well, especially since no one of those flavor sensations overpowers the others.

If I'm not mistaken, Hopf Helle Weisse had an especially estery yeast strain. I don't know that I'd go quite that far here, although I'm sure that both beers use the exact same yeast. Maybe it's just that banana isn't quite as prominent given the dunkelness of this beer. In any case, DW earns a respectable (hefe weizen) banan-o-meter score of 3.5/5.0. Just enough clove spice is in evidence to keep all flavor elements in balance.

The thing that keeps this beer from competing with the Weihenstephaners and the Ayingers of the world is its body. That and not quite enough flavor/complexity of flavor, a direct result of the too-light mouthfeel, I believe. While it isn't overly light, it lacks creaminess and the feel that the carbonation imparts is less than inspired.

Hopf Dunkle Weisse is a good effort and is one of the better, more drinkable versions of the style that I've had in quite a while. It's hefe weizen brother is no slouch either. Both are easy recommendations.

A- deep brown with a chunky thick guinness tan head.
S - chocalate banana, much sweeter than I expected.
T - typical weiss with a malty overtone, a little watery on the M - mouthfeel, but very balanced and a clean finish.
This is a very D - drinkable beer, and a grat option for weiss drinker that want the malt, solid beer.

Pours a hazy brown color with a thick billowing head. Really good lacing. Aroma is basically predominantly bananna with some roasted malt. The body is medium. Good carbonation. The flavor is a combination of soft chocolate malt with wheat beer fruitiness. It's very well balanced. A good dark wheat beer.

Enjoyed on tap at the Weissbrau Hopf Stuberl in Miesbach, Germany, on the first day of my Sep, 2001 trip. Cloudy, dark brown to copper in color, with a large, creamy head. Plenty of pleasant banana and clove aromas. Drawbacks were the body, which was a bit thin; and the bier was somewhat rough on the tongue. Real nice flavor, though, with malty sweetness coupled with more banana/clove. It smooths out as it warms....

This brewery was bought out by Hacher-Pschorr a year or so ago. No worries here though there Biers are still as good as they were before.

Pours up a billowy, creamy fine bubbled head that tops a hazy tea colored bier. Could be a bit darker... The aroma features an upfront fruitiness of bubblegum, bannana, pears and apple. The malt is sweet and toasted. The yeast give the whole thing a nice bready aroma. I like a little more dark malt character. The flavor is sweet up front fades quickly to a mellow bitterness. Fruity yeast by-products greet you upfront and are followed by a slightly toasted caremell flavor. Again for me I prefer a little more roast and robustness from the dark malts. With that said it is a wonderfull dunkles Weissbier!

Zum wohl!!!

Rather decent Dunkleweisse, but nothing special. pours ark brown with offwhite head. Nose is fairly active with some traditional banana/clove of the regular Hefe, but also some fresh baked brownbread maltiness. Palate is somewhat thin bodied, but the fruity flavors come through as well. Nothing spectacular but not worth passing up either.

A - A massive pillowy head with no intent to subside sit over a very cloudy deep brown brew.

S - Faint bananas, caramel, cloves, hints of pears and faint earthy yeast.

T - A deep earthy malty flavor with a hint of cloves and very faint chicory. The aftertaste is a strong earthy malty bitterness. It is nice.

M - A tad astringent, medium to thick body. Refreshing.

D - A nice brew. Malty and pleasant, very true to style. If I crave a dunkel, I will likely have this again.

16.9 oz Brown returnable (at least in Germany) bottle. No apparent freshness dating.

The beer pours a dark coco brown with a chiffon like tan head.

Nose is of wheat malt, subdued banana and spices (clove and pepper).

The taste is very similar to the smell. Earthy malt flavor that kind of reminds me of a nice porter, but lots of spice and banana to remind you it’s a weise. I like this one a lot and I’m sure even a lemon would not effect the taste of this one. Very well balanced through out the beer. Slight smoke flavor emerges about ½ way.

Great mouthfeel. Just the right amount of carbonation and a slightly dry finish. Very easy to drink, this is a perfect session beer. Would be a great compliment to simple foods like fresh grilled fish or a nice salad.

This is a nice find and one I will be going back to. Purchased at Sam’s in Downers Grove for $1.79. What a bargain!

Appearance – This is a very pretty radiant but cloudy brown in color with a big, quickly-rising head. The foam is a darkish white and goes perfectly with the beautiful liquid color.

Smell – This is the real deal. The dark, doughy yeast reminds me of the years I lived in Germany consuming large quantities of Dunkles Weizen. I just love the heavily-toasted malt aroma and the rich, German yeast.

Taste – The wonderful yeast from the nose finds itself to the taste. There’s a small hint of banana but otherwise the flavors mirror the aroma.

Mouthfeel – This is light-bodied but filling with a classic fluffy mouthfeel and a mild, lingering fruity sweetness.

Drinkability – I had no problem emptying my Weihenstephaner glass.

Sampled on tap @ the Freakin' Frog in Las Vegas.

A - Almost porter-esque in its dark brown color and appearance. Minimal head.

S - The smell is a nice lemony sweet scent with clove aspects. The malt definitely stands out the most.

T - Tart & fruity with a tongue tingling feel. The lemony scent sticks around for an appearance on your taste buds. This is very refreshing.

M - Well carbonated yet smooth after the initial burst.

D - Quite drinkable, but the fruitiness could wear on me after more than one.

Pours out a bright amber brown and sits a murky, dark reddish-brown with a large light tan head. Leaves a solid, thick blanket of head all the way down to the bottom of the glass.

Nice, wheat filled aroma filled with toasty hints of caramel and toffee. Mild fruit balance of pears and raisins. Light grassy hints in the background.

Tastes lightly sweet up front with, nice toasty malt flavors. Nice apple-like sourness builds up and introduces a solid hop bitterness that boasts nice grassy flavors. Some fruity notes of sweet apples, mild bananas and a sprinkle of fresh squeezed orange juice. Finish is well bittered with a nice toasty aftertaste and lingering fruit flavors.

Crisp in the mouth with some nice smooth sides to it. Good carbonation in a medium body.

Another solid beer from Hopf. Flavors are quite similar to the Helle, just with an added touch of toastiness. Easy drinking on all corners, a solid session beer.

It pours a cloudy, tawny brown body with a full head of creamy off-white foam that holds exceptionally well but leaves only minor lacing considering the style. Light brown sugar and soft red berries dominate the aroma with only subtle hints of banana and a gentle clove-like spice appear in the nose. The body is medium and it appears initially crisp and then creamy across the palate due to its very fine and effervescent natural carbonation. The flavor delivers a beautiful combination of soft maltiness and gentle fruitiness (berries, apples, bananas). It's very well-balanced by a soft bitterness, and it finishes dry with a short note of fruity yeast. Quite nice! It's weizen yeast character is somewhat restrained, offering a bit more drinkability. Certainly on-par with the better known brands and well worth trying.
