Hopf Helle Weisse

Pours a cloudy, unfiltered yellow with soapy white head.
Aroma has a nice hoppy nose, with musty wheat elements. In the taste, Bavarian style yeast lending muted banana notes. Earthy hops dial in on the back end, with spicy and grassy elements. Crackery malt character with a nice bitterness. Spritzy feel with a light to medium bodied feel. A fine hefeweizen, and lives up to its namesake, a fair amount of hops come through.

From my beer journal. Originally reviewed in Mid May 2011.

A: Cloudy yellow color with a decent head.

S: Lots of bananas and cloves. Wheat

T: Very bright sweet flavor. Absolutely tastes of bananas and cloves. There was something in this that tasted off though. Almost sulfury. Perhaps this beer wasn't fresh.

M: Light to medium body with lots of carbonation. Very creamy and tasty.

O: Again, there may have been something wrong with my beer. I'm not sure though so I have to review what I was tasting.

Banana milkshake!

Had it at Monk's Kettle during a tasting frenzy after a Giant's win.
Definitely the style of Hefe I like: heavy Banana.
The clove influence could have been a bit stronger

Very smooth thick and refreshing
Thick smooth head, cloudy amber yellow orange

Es schmekt Wunderbar!
Reminds me of the Konig Ludwig Weissbier

Had out of a bottle at Monk's Kettle in the Mission district of San Francisco, CA. Our waitress used excellent bottle pour technique. Beer poured a rich cloudy amber. Smell was nice and wheaty like a loaf of fresh baked bread. The taste was surprisingly fruity. OMFG it tastes very akin to a banana smoothy. Not only would I have this again, but if you have never had an unfiltered wit-bier I would strongly recommend you try this. I'd buy the brewery if I could only afford it.

Poured from a half liter bottle into a pint glass.

It's a hazy golden color with a good foamy white head. Good looking beer for the style!

It has a typical banana aroma, with just a hint of wheat and hops as well.

The taste is very much the same, a lot of bananas, creamy and very refreshing! I'm a fan, this is a very good Hefeweizen.

.5L, best before 11/8/11.

Pours a light and cloudy straw-orange. Three-finger, creamy head with fat lacing.

The aroma is very powdery-yeasty, with sweet floral notes. Banana taffy.

The flavor is fine. Grainy-wheaty sweetness countered by a more rubbery, phenolic and dry yeast character on the finish. Not too fruity and not terribly full or satisfying, but not terribly flawed either. The mouthfeel is well-carbonated, though watery and thin.

Drinkable wheat beer, but not a repeat purchase. Lacked some character in the flavor department.

Poured into a tall wine glass. Served with a lemon.

A: Nice golden appearance, bubbly texture. Light carbonated head, not very much retention, with some slight lacing. Doesn't really stand out from other beers, especially some of the watery nasty macrobrews.

S: Smells really nice, just the way to start off a summer. Balanced aromas, bananas, lemons, cloves, vanilla, biscuits.

T: Bananas. Lots of bananas, but its got a well rounded flavor, not too sweet from the bananas, nice tartness from the citrus with the mild breads coming in too. Nice and easy to drink, but also complex enough to satisfy any beernut.

M: A little bubbly, kind of feels like a soda at times, but does go down easy. Really easy to drink.

O: Solid brew here. Got this at a local bar and grille and will surely be back for more as the summer goes on. Wonderful beer to have with friends, sitting outside in the sun.

500ml bottle

A- Very cloudy yellow. Generous head with good retention and nice lacing. Visible carbonation

S- Classic hefeweizen aroma, maybe a bit on the fresher side if that may be the right word. Yeast, and then some lemon and banana

T- Taste is again fresh and a peraphs a bit fruity. Not so much of the classic bready flavour but still enough wheat malts to look like a weizen. Then there are citrus, banana and maybe even orange, along with some spiciness. Very fresh but not that complex

M- Light bodied with a lot of carbonation. Carbonation doesn't get prickly though, and gives life and freshness to the foamy mouthfeel

O- So, this beer has a very refreshing character and very good drinkability. It may sure be a nice summer beer. Not a very interesting one though

A: The beer is cloudy yellow in color and poured into a weizen glass with a two finger high white head that slowly died down and left a thin layer of bubbles consistently covering the surface. A high amount of carbonation is visible.
S: There are aromas of bananas, bubble gum and clove in the nose. The banana flavors stand out in particular.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell and also has some flavors of wheat.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a high amount of carbonation.
D: The beer is easy to drink and quite refreshing.

A - very light yellow color with a little haze
S - really good smell.. smells after banana bread, dried banana, lemon and citruses. It is evident hefeweizen.
T - nice easy taste of banana and lemon also with some light wheat end
M - low to medium body with medium carbonation
D - easy and drinkable. Especially in summer time it is a very light and easy beer.

I'm not a usual fan of hefeweizens, but this one was great. I wouldn't want to say the beer was seriously complex, but it was more then pleasant to drink. It went down smooth, and dare I say, felt like thicker on the tongue then it let on by appearances. If there WAS hops in this brew, I had a hard time detecting it.

A very solid, drinkable/enjoyable hefe. Go for it.

Pours nicely in a standard, room-temperature pint glass. Subtle cloudiness with a blonde hue. An aroma filled with estery banana and clove nodes.

Flavor consists of subtle strawberry and lemon with a nice, creamy finish. Carbonation rolls off the tongue which cleanses the palate of any esters. Light to medium body.

Very nice Hefe. Only wish I had some schnitzel to share it with. Very enjoyable.

500ml bottle purchased at Gourmet Haus Staudt. The beer is a murky opaque blond, highly carbonated, though the head recedes to a thin cap within a few minutes. It smells strongly of bread and fruity esters, bringing to mind banana bread, spice and lemon peel. A touch sweet for the style, though zesty and characterful. The palate is surprisingly dry, with strong flavors of clove, lemon peel, pear and banana. The body is medium-light, dry and zesty. The finish has a mild peppery bite and faint bitterness, which quickly fades into a clean bready aftertaste. Very enjoyable stuff, I'll be grabbing more beers from this brewery in the near future.

Cool little find here, found it in a dwontown grocery here in Munich, a small local brew.
Pours a murky golden straw color, light apricot-orange, rich amount of Hefe murkiness in a Helles. Head is beautiful, full, rocky, fluffy leaving lots of sticky lacing. It holds it retention for quite a long time, off to a great start.
Smells like a pretty solid Hefe. Light citrus fruitness, musty Hefe yeastiness, bit of bitter hoppiness keeping all in check. The mustyness is there, the fruitness as well, but all is a bit subdued, and a tad bit watery, but solid nonetheless.
Flavor is bright, spritzy, exibiting a high level of carbonation a first then ending in a nice citrusy creamy finish. Peppery on the finish, long lingering musty fruitiness. Not so much of the typical "banana cream-o-wheat" flavor here, more of an orange-citrus, with peppery wheat/hefe notes, but the banana is still in the background, used as an underlying flavor, rather than the dominant theme. really good flavor.
Drinkablity is high, as the bright carbonation, light fruity flavor keeps me reaching for my glass frequently.
Overall I have much higher preferences for my Hefe's, but this one was decent, a little too watered down for me, but dont know till you try...

extremely light light yellow, like lemonade, and disgustingly fizzy. has a bready scent, with banana and lemon. its a hefeweizen.

wheat. extremely dry and quite dull. a sweet light fruit flavor through the middle, with just a hint of hops. bready to the point of having to filter grain through my teeth (okay not quite, but you get the point). just a hefeweizen, probably a drainpour.

light and fizzy... drinkability gets a 2 instead of a one because it is so light. however, it makes my stomach twitch a little, so i doubt ill find a way to get to the end of this.

Eyes:
Pale yellow/amber, with thin foam that stuck around for the duration, leaving almost no residue or lacing.

Nose:
Mostly copper and subtle banana. Maybe a trace of something sort of sulphur-like right at the end. I think its a nice smell not overly fruity. Not every Hefeweizen should smell like a bowl of bananas, this is a refreshing BEER smell.

Tongue:
Clean, simple. Missing the deep banana clove combo that seems to dominate the mass produced efforts. It also has very little bitterness, which is nice. Coats the tongue like buttermilk and slides off the back really nicely, this would be a soothing breakfast beer with some weißwurst, and toast points with aprikot jam.

Belch:
I know this isn't an 'official' category but it's becoming an important dimension for me. This is not a burp-inducing brew, RARE for a hefeweizen. I'm nearly finished with it and I can't seem to coax one. Oh wait a little one, hey there's the banana! How'd they do that?!

Overall, this is a refreshing and sporty example of the type, and if it weren't for the draconian German bicycle drinking/driving laws this would be a great companion on an afternoon ride through the vineyards.

Serving type: 0,5 liter bottle, €0.65 purchased at the Getränke Bee around the corner from my house.

20 mixed bottles of craft and specialty weizens for €13 plus crate and bottle deposits.

Pours an unbelievably cloudy pale yellow color, with a thin but long-lasting head and slow-moving lacing.

Smell is very beery, subtle clove and lots of wheat. Enjoyable, if not particularly complex.

Taste is rather bland and like the smell, very beery. Very bready, with just a hint of banana in the flavor. The finish is pleasant, but smacks of adjunct.

Mouthfeel is decent, but the carbonation is a little strong, you mouth seems filled with foam.

Drinkability is also decent, the beer is just not memorable.

Overall, there are much better hefes to be had.

This was one of the first craft beers I remember buying in quantity. It was off the market for awhile, now i'm glad to see it back.

Into a Schwelmer Weizen glass it pours a dull glowing orange. The retention is excellent, and it maintains for at least half an hour. Lightly sweet banana bread and wheat aromas. Creamy feel with some raw wheatiness and more banana in the back. Not really spicy at all, more of a creamy, easy-drinking hefe. Easy carbonation with a mildly fruity yeast ester. Very soft feel, with a lingering banana aftertaste. Quenching on a hot July day like today. My favorite from this brewery is still the Weißer Bock, hope that returns to the market soon also.

Pours a rather standard hazy straw color with above average white head. Nose is the typical banana-clove with some soft bready aromas. On the palate, high carbonation is noted with a pleasant wheat-cracker sweetness balanced by the yeasty estery stuff, and of course the banana (but not as much clove). Rather standard Hefe-Weizen - better than the vast majority of U.S. "craft" examples, but average for German imports.

Agitated before the pour, giving a cloudy lemon-yellow coloured body, with a decent head of large bubbled but meringue-like white foam. Actually looks very light for a weizen, but given they specifically call it a Helle Weisse, I guess this can be forgiven.

Good weizen characters on the nose. Bit of meatiness, fair bit of banana phenols and a light smattering of clove. Quite sweet; what I'm looking for in a weizen, with a nice vanilla character coming through too. Nice.

Taste is something of a let down, with a rather bland flavour profile. Thin, with a lightly sweet yeast character, but not a huge amount, and certainly not a huge amount of spiciness, or true hefe characteristics. Mouthfeel is clean at least. Not amazing, but suitable enough.

It's a drinkable hefe, but a pretty bland one. Nowhere near the peaks of the better examples.

By the watery mouthfeel and *very* subdued flavor profile, in a blind test I would have thought this to be an American Hefe. I think another reviewer called this a "lawnmower beer," and I'd have to agree, if not for the pricetag (see below).

This looks like a good Hefe and actually smells rather promising -- wheat, cloves, maybe some banana. But the taste is just so faint. I paid over $4 for a 500ml bottle, and am shocked. Ayinger's Hefe was more than a dollar less and is sooo much better.

Pours a bright yet cloudy golden color with a huge puffy pure white head that settles fairly quickly into a solid cap. The aroma is pretty one sided with banana, more of a banana creame pie. The taste is of over-rippened bananas, it also has some sort of other unique flavor. I want to say vanilla or perhaps mineral water but it is probably not but it does give way to the banana creame pie flavor. The feel is very smooth, no sharp wheat characteristic. The carbonation is prickly but leads into a silky feel in the end. Overall, a very smooth hefe, could use some more spice flavor. Worth a purchase.

03/29/09- Purchased at Bevmo in San Mateo, CA.

Presentation- 500ml bottle with a small freshness code printed on the back label. Poured into my Ayinger weizen glass.

Appearance- Unfiltered clouded pour with a full once inch head...lasts about two minutes and settles at a half finger head. Yellow-orange hued in color with some quick fading lace markings.

Smell- Traditional banana and clove nose. A slight bit of bubble gum, some white pepper and good wheat scent.

Taste-Bubble gum comes out most in the flavor with clove following suit. Banana is present, but a bit hiiden by the other flavors. A bit peppery, but a touch watery in the finish.

Mouthfeel- Very clean in the aftertaste...not much with a quick finish. Carbonation is a touch too much, but that's being a bit picky. A touch watery as mentioned above.

Drinkability- Purchased three weizens I have not tried today. This was the most expensive at $4.29....pretty good brew. Not the best I have had, but a good job per style. Enjoyed and would purchase again.
