Poured into a balloon glass.

The beer is as black as an espresso bean with brown coming through on the edges. A vanilla head recedes to a group of bubbles with light lacing remaining on the glass.

The beer smells of roasted malts, alcohol up front, then an inky, oily licorice and vanilla follow.

The beer tastes a good part of the aroma. There's a decent amount of burnt malts up front, then an oily licorice body. Some sweet vanilla extract, and a faint bitter coffee finish.

The mouthfeel is somewhat dry, but altogether not bad. There's a smoothness to it as well.

Overall, I wish I knew the ABV to this. Altogether, an above average beer from Weston. More good qualities than bad.

A - Beer out of bomber. Filthy dark beer. Looks great. Nice thick tan style head. Lacing leaves some to be desired.

S - Strong dark chocolate roasted malts.

T - Taste matches the smell. Strong chocolate malt is not shy.

M - Lightly dry mouth feel.

O - Nice chocolate stout, though I am not a fan of the style.

Tried a couple others of theirs, one I thought was OK & another that made more an impression. Spotted a big bottle of this in the singles section at the liquor store & decided to check where they were with it. On pour a very dark brown yet not black (think dark caramel), tan poofy head takes up top two inches, pulls away from the sides, then leaves a film on top.

Smell is dark chocolate, straight up -- simple, but rather damn pleasing. Yup, it's a porter alright. Now to find out how good of one it is...

Taste opens out to include something reminding me of cinnamon with all that chocolate from the dark malt. Roast character is there, but subtle. Not particularly highly hopped, so the malt is the star. Mouth is fairly balanced, substantive but not super thick.

It's not flashy, but it's delicious, a straightforward porter. They're on the rise w/ this one.

Pours a brown tinged mahogany with 3 fingers of tan head. Below average head retention & lacing

S: Roasty malt & cocoa in abundance

T: Coffee, roasty malt & a touch of iron up front. A bit of mocha as this warms, more roasty notes, Finishes roasty, dry & more-ish

MF: Medium bodied, soft carbonation, nice creamyness as this warms

This is easily the best beer I've had from these guys. It's seems their quality is improving in leaps & bounds. A very nice porter this is one they should put in the rotation & drop some of the dead wood they are selling now

My wife actually bought this for me at the store as a surprise. I have kind of been avoiding Weston for a while because of a bad experience with one of their beers. However, I have heard the Brew Labs series isn't too bad, and I had to drink it anyway. I mean, its' still beer...Side poured with standard vigor from the bottle into a large tulip glass.

Appearance - As a porter should, it poured as black as oil with a nice fluffy, tan head that lasted for some time. Brew leaves good lacing as well. The bottle itself is also kind of cool, very old time label. The 1842 in the name denoted when the brewery was founded.

Smell - The smell was little off. Of course there were the requisite dark roasted malts, coffee, and chocolate scents, but there was kind of a funky, off-smell to it. I couldn't put my finger on it, it almost smelled like a citronella candle....and I wasn't outside.

Taste - Fortunately, I could not pick up that funkiness in the taste. The brew was actually quite good, with roasted malts throughout balanced by a hint of hops. Coffee and chocolate also played into the taste. Excellent taste after an unusual nose.

Mouthfeel - A little overcarbonated and thin on the finish, but it did finish smooth. Because of the thinness, it wasn't as rich as some other porters I have had.

Overall - This is certainly a beer worth trying. I'm not sure if it is distributed outside the KC-St. Joseph area, but it worth a try if you are ever in the area or happen to visit the brewery. I want to give it another shot, thinking about going to the brewery and seeing if they have growlers of this for sale. I would buy it again for sure.

Bomber poured into a pint stout glass.

Dark brown color, opaque with no cloudiness. About 1/2" head, which soon disappeared. Effervescence continued, mostly around the outer edge, leaving minimal lacing.

Aroma is muted, roasted malt and coffee.

Flavor is good, with roasted malt, coffee, chocolate. Not strong, but a good balance.

Mouthfeel is smooth, not as thick as most porters. Carbonation is there, but not overwhelming.

Overall - I have learned to be wary of Weston beers. Too many stride-outs. I won't give this a home run, but would call it a triple. This is my second bottle and worth the purchase.

I poured a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance- Dark brown color with two fingers worth of lingering tan head. Fair amount of lacing.

Smell- Dark roasted malt with a faint amount of hops.

Taste- Dark roasted malt, char, and tiny hint of hops.

Mouthfeel- Full bodied and smooth. Generous amount of carbonation.

Overall- Very impressive. I am not a big fan of porters but I like this one. One of Weston Brewing Co. better brew. Definitely better than their O'Malley's Stout.
