750ml bottle poured into tulip 26/11/13
A slight haze in brown liquid, large 3 finger head has decent retention and leaves a collar of lace followed by some random patches
S lots of campfire ash, burnt bacon, smoked meat, faint bourbon, lots of charred wood, chewing tobacco, burnt brown sugar, just a hint of booze, and some sugar coated raisin
T smoked apples added to the mix, meaty, a little leafy, not quite what the nose had going on but still great, the tobaccos burnt and I get just the faintest hint of coco
M a little thin, the bubbles give it some life, a little grit on the gums, smokey finish
O solid smoked brew, the barrels subtle but works, lots of meaty smoke and that suits me fine
I had this the other day at a tasting and it smelled like shit, well a fart actually, was the worst brew of the evening. It's possible the bottle we shared was a little off, wouldn't be the first time I had a bad bottle from LTDD. This time around I'd say it was a solid beer that I'd drink again but I'd be hesitant knowing there's a variance bottle to bottle and its not cheap.

Pours a deep tan head, takes some time to subside, big lacing ring at the tilt point. Deep chestnut brown hued liquid, opaque. Pungently smoky nose, charcoal, tar, mesquite grill smoke, caramel, pear to apple fruit scents, more chocolatey with air time, full and pleasing. Medium-bodied, soft and extremely foamy mouth presence. Kindling smoke, burnt cocoa, molasses, cola bean, generic nuttiness, the flavors show good definition. Here it’s more like peach, red cherry, apricot for fruit but that’s a minor component. Overall, it’s not a raw or savage take on the style but very consistent and on point, consumed with gusto.

Le Trou Du Diable "Punk Rauch"
on tap @ Vices & Versa, Montreal, Canada on 1 Octobre 2014
$3.91 Canadian / 10 oz.
Notes: "Lager Fumee". Hazy mahogany body beneath a light tan head. OK lacing and retention. Aroma of sweetish caramelish malt and mild smoke. The flavor follows with some additional smooth, light, almost burnt sugar and a very subtle tang. Medium-light in body with a moderate carbonation that leaves it creamy and smooth - perfect for a smoked beer, although the smoke here is actually fairly mild. There's enough that you smell it, and taste it, but it remains a part of the beer and not the dominating factor. Nicely done!

On tap at Swillburger/The Playhouse in Rochester, NY.
This one pours a light brown-ish color, with a white creamy head, and a bit of lacing.
Smells like sweet phenolic smoke, kind of band-aid like, unfortunately. There are some palatable campfire like smokey flavors, but the bandaid is rough.
The taste is a bit better, but the phenolic smoke is rough. There's some caramelized sugar, chocolate, and campfire, but the rubbery bandaid phenol thing keeps me from truly enjoying this. I don't know if it's age, or the way they smoked the malt, but they gotta get that in check.
This is light bodied, quite creamy, with a good level of carbonation.
If they fixed the main flaw in this beer, it would be quite nice. It's a bit of a mess now, though.

Badass image on the label. A cool bottle cap, a cool bottle, not to mention printing "rauch" in the name and clarifying that with the "Smoked Lager" descriptor alerting SmokeBeerMinistry that this beer was made by devotees (apparently one of the Hanson Brothers... uh, the Canadian Hanson Brothers, big difference). Devil bottle cap removed and not overwhelmed by a smoky smell. And the color, while dark, is not so dense, and allows light to pass through. Punkrauch tastes like a smokebeer, with Bamberg-esque malts, which faded pretty quickly. It poured nice and neat with a decent blond head that left nice lacing on the glass. Slight campfire smell and taste, slight sour notes; a thirst quenching beer, which I would not equate with a $10 price tag and a champagne bottle. Emits a nice deep ruby hue when held up to a light, which was immediately followed by potentially visually induced tart notes of dried cherries, hmm.
The verdict: I like this beer. It's a little bit of pomp and circumstance, a bit overpriced, but still a pleasant drinking experience. Overall happiness metric 4.5 out of 7... which is converted into BA metrics above.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a dark, hazy red-orange with a half finger light khaki head with great retention and good lacing. Aroma of smokehouse, caramel malt; lightly nutty. Flavor is caramel malt with light toastiness, nuts, mild dark dried fruit, smoke; not quite as smokehouse as the aroma, finishes with toasted malt and smoke. Nice moderately creamy body with good carbonation. A nice, smoky rauchbier. The base beer has a brown ale profile, almost a nut brown ale and the smoke component works quite well with it. The flavor is a little mild, I would have liked a bit more malt character, but fit the rauchbier character. My first ale from this brewery and I will look for others.

Poured from a bottle into a modified tulip glass.
A - Dark caramel in color, a wonderful full crown tops the glass.
S - Smoke is in fine balance, malts and warm leather.
T - Fig, lite cocoa, and wrap tobacco.
F - this is the finest element. warm and rich textures show off the brewers skills.
O - A modified Rauch with delicate textures.
A treat to be sought out for certain.
Cheers

A — Pours a deep brown hue into the glass, there is a bit of clarity to it, this thing actually looks smoky just sitting in the glass, its as though its been charred and is smoking in the glass.
S — Smells of big pungent smoked malts, lots of smoky under and overtones, good bit of a meaty component here too, lots of bacon character.
T — Tastes much like the nose, though its a bit more complex, layers of smoke, from light campfire, to hue charred brisket. Nicely done actually.
M — Medium bodied, high enough level of carbonation.
O — Pretty good overall, smells a bit intense, but it mellows out and does a really good job overall.
