Bottle from ZorPrime, 750ml into a tulip. March 2012 dating.

Golden orange (clear, poured sans yeast). Dense white head with thick full lacing and retention. Nose is oaky, malty, vanilla, underripe fruits, some lemon and light funk. More malt and barrel character in terms of flavours, oak, vanilla, light tartness, nectarine, ripe pear and rawer light fleshed fruits. A bit of gentle lemon. Medium full feel, no alcohol and carbonation is quite low. A nice barrelled sour, barrel contributes quite a bit however to toning down the sourness of the beer which I would've liked a smidgen more of.

A: A copper haze of an ale with a 3 fingers of bone white head, nice retention of tight microfilm skirts the top rim to rim.
S: Tart apples and lemon juice pop forward with spices of white pepper and coriander. Overall earthy grape muskiness with that sourness associated with a farmhouse. Interesting to note there's an undertone of flowery soapy.
T: Acidity up front of lemon rinds and and pith with sourness and tannins of wet wood. The tartness reminds me of a resiling, bright and refreshing with dryness that sucks to the tongue. A big flavour of dry grape rinds is notable along with the muskiness of dry dirt. Interesting that there is no notable alcohol flavour in the taste.
M: Moderate carbonation with a dry finish, again reflecting of wine characteristics.
O: The oak barrels develop a significant wine forward ale, flavours are tangy, tart, with a dryness that sucks to the tongue and a earthy grape muskiness.

A: Semi-opaque, golden colour. Puffy and stubborn head eventually reduces to a film.

S: Peaches, pears, apricot, and a layer of mustiness.

T: Opens up with strong oaky barrel character and that persists the whole way through for me. Lots of fruit (same as the nose) and that musty skin character of the brett, which opens up further in subsequent glasses from the bottle. The sourness is almost gueuze-like, much older and more developed character than typical in the saison-brett's I've had. This is an outstanding one. Gueuze like acidity as well.

M: Crisp, semi-dry.

O: An absolutely outstanding example of a farmhouse ale. Premium price, but I think it lives up to it.
