I am almost out of the Winter woods here at Chez Woody, but I still have a few from The Friendly Greek in bottle format that need to be reviewed before Spring can be sprung.

From the bottle: "The Gift of Great Beer [undersigned] Mark A Thompson Master Brewer".

A screw-top bottle made it easier for me to get started but I was startled when I got foam coming through the neck right afterwards. I quickly began the pour and I got some pseudo-cascading action as it generated some tawny head. Head retention was very low, however, and quickly turned into a skim of wisps atop the beer. Color was a dark-brown with ruby highlights (SRM = > 17, < 22) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was sugary malty sweet with an alcohol burn that tickled my nostrils. This may get me where I am going in one quick hurry! Mouthfeel was medium and the taste was of caramel, anise, malt husks and of course, a little bit of alcohol burn for good measure. Man, but this was super sweet as compared to the AIPAs that I usually drink and I began to sweat as a result. Finish was sweet, no two ways about it and the alcohol burn was literally breathtaking in the throat. Phew! One of these at a time, please. No wonder the monks could be held over all day after one. Bro. Woody has spoken.

- dopplebock. pkg on 10/28/13. consumed 2/26/14.

A: Soapy thin capping overlays a brazilian cherry colored body. Short retention time, no legs on the vessel, with a moderate display of quick release carbonation.

S: Aroma was cola, rootbeer candy, with a hint of raisiny caramel sweetness.

T: Flavor was raisiny caramel, speciality grains, light chocolate, honey-munich toastedness, with some cola. A light woodsy-flowery hopping arrives late as well a light fade of dry alcohol.

M: Chewy raisiny-caramel body, decent carbonation factor.

O: Overall pretty decent flavor wise, nice finish, decent, and perhaps a few shades light of a good recommendation but nothing to get to finicky about.

A- a nice deep, clear brown. A dark tan head pours out as well, but it has no retention at all.

S- mild, with some earthy hops and some light toffee aromas

M- non-descript maltiness with some mild earthy hops.

M- a decent thickness to it and fairly crisp

O-not terrible, but not nearly as full-flavored as its German originators.

A: Pours a nice clear dark ruby with a small light tan head that doesn't linger long.

S: Aroma of dark fruits, raisin with a definitive maltiness. There's a bit of a spicy, earthy component that comes through with a nice rich caramel and bread crust backbone.

T: Nice full malt flavor with dark fruits and caramel with a bit of chocolate in the background. There are pleasant earthy, bready tones with a pronounced sweetness, although not cloying. A light alcohol flavor is detectable but not overpowering A medium low carbonation is present.

M: There's a medium/ full body to this brew with a bit of a pleasant silky mouthfeel.

O: I like this doppelbock. It lacks the complexity of say... a Celebrator but it's a very nice beer. I would like to see it a hair bit dryer but I would buy this again.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a reddish brown color with good clarity. The head is really disappointing - it's not even a finger high, and even then doesn't have good retention. It's more or less a mocha-colored film. No lacing to speak of, either.

S: Pretty typical for a doppelbock. The primary note here is caramel sweetness, but there's also a goodly amount of brown sugar (and later, nuts) emanating. Some of the fruitier notes - like, say, cherry - aren't as prevalent as I'd like them to be. Let's call the nose 'satisfactory', shall we?

T: Yep, this is a total caramel-and-brown sugar bomb. It finishes with a faint hint of fruity lager yeast. This is a solid (but simple) doppelbock, with one problem...a mustiness builds up on the back end, and it's kind of off putting.

M: The light flavor profile does give it an advantage here...despite the high sweetness level, it's zesty carbonation and semi-dry finish makes this one pretty drinkable. The lager yeast is a little too biting in its crispness, but otherwise there's nothing wrong with the mouthfeel.

O: For better or worse, this is a lighter doppelbock. It's not bold, but it's easy to drink. It's only problem is there are a couple other examples out there that ARE bold, while retaining its drinkability. I wouldn't put this one on my "must purchase again" list, that's for sure.
