DATE REVIEWED: July 6, 2014... GLASSWARE: Paulaner pokal... OCCASION: 4th of July yardwork and party unwinding... APPEARANCE: pale, tawny, watered-down yellow body; white head sits with an appropriate pillowy arc, then settles out as a reasonable, albeit soapy ring; sporadic, tentacle lacing... AROMA: spritzy, light pale malts suggest pilsner; some bubblegum as well, but not much more in complexity... PALATE: medium-bodied, yet light in carbonation; a pleasant, lingering aftertaste; a good partner for post-mowing deck relaxation...in essence, a slightly uncomfortable mouthfeel... TASTE: a predictably clean, taut malt assertion; biscuity at the finish; hops are clean and balancing... OVERALLL: little distinguishes this beer from the myriads of pilsners within the genre, but that is a positive in some respects; as a fourth of a sampler, hopefully not the one to be rushed towards, but that will depend on the rest of the mix...for now, serviceable and palate-cleansing...

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a clear straw color. The head is about a finger high, with a white shade and a very bubbly texture. Quick to fade, it leaves behind a spotty web of lacing.
S: Fairly simplistic. The hops seem to take on a sulfury, vegetal tone instead of a grassy one, unfortunately. Luckily, the malt is clean, and the diacetyl is restrained. Not the best aroma for the style.
T: The flavor takes what I didn't like from the aroma...and amplifies it. The primary notes are mint, sulfur, bell pepper, and a faint hint of apricot. If I focus, I can pick up some nice Saaz hop flavors - in fact, the more I drink it, the more the vegetal flavors go away (being replaced with a more defined grassiness). Malts are nearly imperceptible.
M: Crisp and light, with a great finishing dryness. It also seems to be fairly soft for a pilsner. It's not intensely carbonated, either, which helps give it some beef for 4.2%.
O: Not a great pilsner. But, it goes down easily at least. At first, the vegetal notes ruined it; after a few sips, they only become a mild annoyance. Even though I wasn't a huge fan, I could legitimately drink a couple of these without complaint (usually with a mediocre beer, I'll have one and be done with it). Still, I wouldn't buy this again.

At daughter's house in MS.
Pours a clear straw yellow with a decent white head of less than average retention leaving d some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of grainy malts and grassy hops and some faint skunkyness are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the nose and frankly does not have much in interest or character going for it.
Finishes dry. Very average probably something I wouldn't be purchasing.
