12 FL.OZ. bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

This beer pours a light shade of amber with yellow highlights. It is topped with a fleeting white head that leaves no lacing.

I don't get a lot of blueberry in the smell. It smells like a golden ale with hints of blueberry.

The blueberry is more pronounced in the taste. It reminds me of a blueberry muffin.

Medium mouthfeel

This is a decent blueberry ale. It is nothing special but is not awful. (450 characters)

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of blueberry, wheat, cracker, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of blueberries, pale malt, and earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of blueberry, wheat, cracker, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of blueberry, wheat, cracker, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Good robustness and balance of blueberries, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Not too dry after the finish. Medium carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.7%. Overall this is a nice fruit wheat. All around good balance and robustness of blueberries, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. I would have preferred to see some wheat yeast influence in the flavors for a bit more complexity; but it was still a nicely enjoyable offering. (1,453 characters)

Blindly got a can of this at my bottle shop. Wasn't sure what to expect, but I was feeling a fruit beer, so I grabbed a single of it for $2.19. Canned 3/20 and poured 7/14 -- a little old, but not much.

Appearance: Poured this into my usual, a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass. I poured in vertically as aggressively as possible and got nothing out of it as far as a head -- what was there was gone within moments. The beer sits in the glass golden yellow in color with no lacing. There is a steady stream of carbonation. Looks very underwhelming.

Smell: Instantly when I cracked the can I got a whiff of blueberry. Rather than smelling like freshly ripened blueberries though, this smells a little different, but in a good way. I guess blueberries can be pretty variable in how they smell, but the blueberry in this beer comes off as sweet, sour, and tangy. Sort of like what you'd smell out of a blueberry pie or something, especially since the wheat gives a sort of pie crust vibe. Very pleasant, and would make anyone want to take a drink.

Taste/feel: Right away, the feel is pretty much water thin with a pretty prickly carbonation. It's a little disappointing for that reason, but at the same time, this is something I'd really quench on a hot day. The blueberry flavor is all over in this beer, and it's very nice against the wheat ale base -- exceptionally drinkable, especially due to the fact that even though there's a nice wallop of blueberry flavor, this isn't a sweet beer at all.

I enjoy it for what it is. I mean ideally I'd give this beer a little more body and a little more of a malt flavor, but as it stands, this is an incredibly "crushable" beer... probably my new #1. In a canoe, on a beach, after hiking, you name it, this beer would be gold. (1,766 characters)

Definitely has a blueberry aroma, and the flavor is there initially. The bottle I had was a bit long in the tooth I suspect as the initial flavors were positive, but quickly faded to a slightly chemically tang. It wasn't a bottle pour, but probably would've been better fresh. (276 characters)

A light, sessionable beer with an extra kick of sweetness. The blueberry is apparent on first whiff, but even more apparent on first sip. It's a natural blueberry instead of a more candied flavor, which is pleasant. Much more carbonation than I was expecting, but it actually balanced out nicely and was easily drinkable after the first few curious sips. The overall flavor isn't too deep, but it's interesting enough to be worth a try or two. (443 characters)

14 oz. on draft at Hadlock Field, home of the Portland Sea Dogs, appropriately.

Appearance: It's a heavily carbonated, somewhat cloudy rusty gold. Very little head. Looks like a lot of "meh" fruit beers tend to look like.

Aroma: Smells like a wet Entenmann's blueberry muffin. Little tiny bit of wheat. Not very strong in the nose.

Taste: Kind of a flat pale ale with an essence of blueberry. The blueberry gets a little more forward as it warms. Tastes more like a blueberry muffin than like fruit. That bit of wheat is also there, a little.

Mouthfeel: Thin. "Summery" might be a charitable way of putting it.

Overall: I'll admit, first of all, that I tend to think fruit beer is dumb. But I like some other Sea Dog stuff and this seemed like a decent sunny day beer - plus Maine is known for its terrific blueberries and blueberry desserts. This beer, however, does not deliver. It's wildly popular and there's worse stuff out there, but it doesn't have the flavor nor the depth for me to consider having it again. (1,021 characters)

12-oz bottle into craft pub glass

A - 2 fingers of white quickly-receding foam over a fairly-clear body of gold, low to moderate visible carbonation

S - sweet blueberry muffin

T - sweetened blueberries and wheat, bitter and spicy notes in the finish

M - light/medium body, medium/high amount of prickly carbonation

O - All right for a fruit beer. Nothing spectacular. (373 characters)

Smell is outstanding. Popped one open, left the room, came back the whole room smelled like blueberry muffins. Taste is good. The blueberries are out front and delicious. It's not the greatest crafted brew I've had and the taste devolves/diminishes shortly thereafter, but its stays alright. Not a great fruit beer, but definitely a good one. (342 characters)

let me just say, there is a time and a place for this one, and when it is the time, and you find yourself in the place, this really can be pretty awesome beer. now i know its not the next great west coast ipa or barrel fermented sour ale, not even close, but we have to step back and appreciate this one for what it is. the fruit is genuine, not over the top, and has some tartness with its natural sugars. the wheat base beer is light, well enough crafted, if a big generic, and in combination with high carbonation levels, a clean finish for the style, and a real low abv, this is pretty cool beer in a warm weather context. its excellent with seafood, especially of the fried variety, and is honestly a pretty underrated beer. ive heard it goes off pretty quick with age, and that the bottles are better than the cans, but my first and only impression of this is resoundingly more positive than the other reviewers here on BA. honesty better than not bad, which i dont think its scores reflect very well. refreshing and worthy of taking up a few spaces in my refrigerator, not ashamed to say so. (1,098 characters)

Ratings are correct below, but I changed some marks above to make the final rating as correct as possible with Beer Advocate's "revamped" system. The 3.60 overall rating is correct.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Stone Ruination IPA pint glass
From: Albertsons in Alpine, Calif.
Price: $1.67 ($9.99 for a mix 6-pack)
Purchased: Jan. 2, 2015
Consumed: Jan. 19, 2015
Misc.: Best enjoyed by Feb. 2015

Poured a copper, pale, clear color with one finger of off-white head, that dissipated quickly. Few streams of bubbles coming up from the bottom. Minimal lacing. Minimal retention. (Sight - 2.88)

Smelled blueberry, raspberry, blueberry muffins, artificial sugary notes, boysenberry and blackberry. (Smell - 3.75)

Tasted pretty close to the nose. Blueberry, blueberry muffin, blueberry pancakes, light sugary caramel, bready malts and Blue Raspberry Blow Pop. (Taste - 3.63)

Light body. Thin-to-oily texture. Soft carbonation. Abrupt, fruity finish. (Feel - 3.00)

A pretty decent fruit beer overall, although I’m a sucker for them. Would be nice in the summer. (Overall - 3.63)

Sampled this evening on 12/29/14. Had this once before about 2 years ago but had to retry it and do a good review on it. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a flute glass.

Pours a golden-amber in color with a white foamy cap that doesn't last a real long time. Some sheets of spotty lacing is seen when sipped that slides back down the glass. The aroma is very pleasant and is like a fresh blueberry tart. The taste is pretty much the same with the blueberries and wheat right up front. Not as sweet as you might think though. Very smooth with no bitter or harsh aftertaste at all. A very refreshing brew with a great flavor for most anytime of the year, though the warmer months might be a tad better. I liked this one. (756 characters)

Look 7/10

Taste 34/40

Drinkability 16/20

Overall 82/100

Very nice and refreshing blueberry beer. Was a gift and it really my style. That and the fact that it's 5 degrees outside is making it rather hard to enjoy.... Seems like it would most likely make a great refreshing treat on a hot summers day. I would reconsider this fruity delight again on a bit day... It's rather smooth and drinkable, a bit watery to earn elite status. (556 characters)

12oz bottle - I presume that this brew is made by Shipyard, since it arrived in our liquor jurisdiction at the very same time as the Shipyard products?

This beer pours a clear, bright medium golden amber hue, with two chubby fingers of tightly foamy, and somewhat creamy off-white head, which leaves pretty much nil in terms of persistent lace as it quickly blows off.

It smells of sugary blueberry, a bit of strawberry candy, a hint of sharper cherry juice, an equally saccharine bready caramel malt, and faint earthy, weedy hops. The taste is thankfully much less sweet overall, though the flavours remain the same - blueberries, underripe strawberries, a doughy caramel malt, suggestions of neutered grainy wheat, a bit of earthy yeast, and still quite tame weedy, leafy hops.

The carbonation is fairly understated, barely seeming to fulfill its base support duties, the body medium-light in weight, and generally smooth, in a plain juicy sort of way. It finishes off-dry, and not as sweet as I was initially led to believe - the fruit is more or less balanced, and some edgy old-school hops round things out.

An enjoyable enough fruit beer, the blueberry guest allowed to run rampant in many of its forms - confectionery to start, all the way to a decent intersection of fruitiness and acid by the finish. Easy to drink, I could see having a few of these in the sun of a seaside summer patio. (1,403 characters)

08/25/11 I am liking this one a lot. Spot on summertime taste. Not to much of anything, just a good balance of the wheat ale with some very upfront blueberries.

The folks at Sea Dog say: "delightful aromatics and subtle flavor contributed by Maine wild blueberries." I found the blueberries to be right out front, not that I minded that one iota. Not to sweeten but to balance the tang of the wheat. Great for a hot summer's day. (431 characters)

Could have sworn this was called Blue Paw, but nothing came up under the search. Maybe the bar had it mislabeled on their menu.

Hazy color, no head when brought to my table. Very intense blueberry smell bursts off the top. Tastes about as sweet as it smells, a little on the sweet side, but not what I'd call overwhelming. Doesn't have that syrupy taste of some other fruit brews I've had. I have to say, the blueberry tastes like it's well blended in the malt, doesn't taste artificial or like it was added after the brewing process. If you're looking for hops, though, look elsewhere. I personally enjoy this one, I'm a bit partial to blueberries. Great choice of a dessert beer, or paired with fruit. (704 characters)

Slightly hazy golden color with a thick white head with medium retention.
Unique aroma with notes of guaraná soda and definitely blueberries.
Likewise flavor of rose petals, clearly blueberries, core of pineapple, ginger and wheat.
Light body with good carbonation. Elegant tartness.
Decent fruit beer, extremely easy to drink. Subtle as the blueberry itself, it sure feels real. (380 characters)

A - Pale clear yellow body with one finger of bubbly white head. Not too much retention and no lacing to speak of.

S - Just as you would expect, massive amounts of blueberry and nothing else.

T - Very dry and strong blue berry flavors rush in. Slight doughiness in the aftertaste.

M - Light body with moderate carbonation. Very slick and refreshing. Drinks like a soda.

O - While I appreciate having unique varieties of beers to suit different palates, this isn't a beer for me. I used to love this beer around the time I came of drinking age, but my tastes have changed. The beer is very drinkable and certainly not difficult to throw back, but is incredibly one note. I'd love to see variations off of this with a strong malt backbone or possibly an IPA variation. Anyway, this kind of beer is polarizing. It's a great beer for some and a terrible beer for others. (870 characters)

16oz on tap at The Porch in Key West, FL 5/27/2014.

A- typical hazy straw yellow body with a nice wheat beer style retention and great lacing.

S- straight up blueberries and pale malt. A bit of banana. But this is the most blueberry forward nose I've ever had the chance to smell.

F- blueberry juice, biscuits, cloves and banana. A bit of a letdown compared to the nose but still very drinkable and flavourful.

M- thin bodied but packed with blueberry jam. A nice banana finish. Very fruity and disappears very quickly.

O- best blueberry nose I've ever smelled. It's like blueberry muffins in a beer. The flavour isn't as packed with blueberries as the nose suggests but this is definitely a good brew. (711 characters)

I have had a blueberry microbrew before which was quite good, so I was looking forward to this one. However, I ended up quite disappointed.

Appearance is not bad, with a medium gold color and average head that disappeared quickly.

The smell was very nice, with a pronounced blueberry smell with underlaying hops and wheat.

However, when I tasted the brew, all the blueberry taste was hidden under a salty, bitter flavor that stayed on my tongue long after the beer was gone. Very disappointing.

The mouthfeel was okay, with a little heft that was appropriate for the coloring.

Overall, I was upset that the beer flavor did not live up to the name or smell. (661 characters)

12 ounce can -> wheat beer glass

A - pours up a very clear gold with minimal head. The is no retention and no lacing.

S - very fruity blueberry nose with some banana notes as well

T - Taste follows the note. There is a nice big sweet blueberry taste giving way to a mild dry finish. As most wheat beers, there is some banana, coriander, and spicy flavors as well.

M - average with average carbonation. No real aftertaste

O - This is a good beer for a hot summer day. It's very easy to drink and while not a big beer, it isn't bad at all. (545 characters)

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a golden amber color with a two finger head of fizzy white foam. The head fades quite fast leaving only a light level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – As may be expected, the beer’s aroma is big of a nice blueberry smell. The blueberry, while strong is not artificial, but actually smells rather authentic of blueberries. This blueberry aroma is mixed with some aromas of a light wheaty nature as well as a bit of a floral smell, with the overall aroma being very sweet and fruity.

Taste – The taste begins much drier then the nose would have suggested. It begins with a semi-sweet blueberry flavor mixed with a decent sum of a wheaty flavor. These two flavors create a base for the brew, both remaining relatively constant throughout the flavor profile. As the flavor advances some light earthy and floral notes come to the tongue along with some more grainy like tastes. At the end of the taste, a grassy flavor comes to the tongue, leaving a rather interesting blueberry in a field (wheat/grass/hay like) flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is rather thin and light with a carbonation level that is rather high. Both are quite nice for the style and make for a more crisp and refreshing brew, which match well the wheat and fruit flavors of the brew.

Overall – A rather easy drinking fruit beer. It is nothing outstanding, but in terms of making for a not overly sweet, but moderately blueberry fruited flavored brew, this one has it right. Not too bad. (1,583 characters)

Straw colored pour, minimal white head, minimal lacing.

Blueberries are the most prominent aroma here with typical wheat beer properties.

While on the sweet side, there is a time and a place to enjoy this blueberry bomb of a wheat beer. SDBWA is a nice Summer beverage when you want something light and refreshing.

Mouthfeel relatively thin, lots of carbonation.

Guilty of enjoying this one every once in a while: nothing stellar, but a nice change of pace. Some find the blueberry flavor artificial, but I think it is pleasant and worth trying once or twice. (561 characters)
