This great pub is situated in the southeast quadrant of Winchester, outside the city centre in a neighborhood near the river Itchen. There are many rooms with a very eclectic collection of ornaments and wall-hangings: books, clocks, keys, old sunglasses and pocket watches, a stuffed baboon and donkey, and a Christmas tree hanging upside down from the ceiling. Lots of tables and seating areas including a beer garden when the weather is nice. It is a very spacious pub with an authentic English quaintness (i.e.- not a Disney version of Englishness). The vibe is cozy, friendly and open to strangers (not a locals only pub). It's not a posh joint, but not "chav-y" either. On the Saturday afternoon that my wife and I visited, there were a couple of dogs wandering around the place. They seem to be residents of the pub, judging by the dog bed in one corner.

The selection is pretty good for Winchester. Six handpumps offering real ales from independent breweries like Hampshire and Ringwood. Also the standard keg and bottle stuff, plus three CO2 taps of cider and an IPA that I had not heard of (didn't write down the name), and a good wine list.

Quality of the real ale is nearly perfect. Perfect temperature and condition. And I was very impressed that the bartender poured my beer three times because he was not satisfied with the clarity of it. When one pump emptied, he immediately put another cask on it.

Service is good. Friendly and attentive. I'm not very good at asserting myself at the bar so I sometimes end up waiting. The bartender was on the ball though and served me before another bloke that had sidled up to the bar after me even though I was standing back a bit.

They do have food here but we didn't try it. The plates we saw carried past us looked pretty tasty, though.

This pub is a must if you are visiting Winchester. Knock back a couple of pints here and then wander down past Wolvesey Castle to The Wykeham Arms for a few more pints and a gourmet dinner.
