At 5.0%abv., this is another US-UK inter-cultural beery collaboration contracted by the Wetherspoon pub chain for its recent real ale festival (Oct. 2013), brewed by the American brewer at the Shepherd Neame Brewery in Kent. Tasted by half a pint at the Monks’ Retreat, a Wetherspoon pub in Reading, served by a swan-neck hand pull.

A: dark hazlenut brown in colour, coming with a light beige froth & a low level of carbonation.
S: fruity & malty upfront with a light whiff of ripe plum-ish esters, plus a good level of acidity.
T: softly carbonated on the entry, the subtle herbal hoppiness backs the otherwise nutty, roast-malt & toffee dominated flavour; bitter-sweet, pretty dry throughout each sip, going lingeringly bitter at a moderate scale in the clean, well-attenuated finish.
M&O: smoothly carbonated, this rather clean & medium-bodied Altbier-style beer is pretty decent though unlike the true German examples, perhaps due to the lagering issues. Still, a very decent attempt at this style to be brewed at one of the oldest breweries in English that is renowned for its cask-conditioned ales only.

Official blurb first.

Cask; special for Wetherspoons Real Ale Festival 2013.
Brian Buckowski has travelled to Shepherd Neame Brewery, in Kent, to re-create this beer especially for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival. This deep amber-coloured beer is brewed in the style of a German Alt Bier, resulting in a herbal, spicy hop aroma and notes of caramel and toffee in the flavour, balanced by the perfect amount of bitterness.
Hops used: Hallertau Hersbrücker, Hallertau Mittlefrüh.

Now my bit.

Never had a cask Alt before, or at least I don't think I have: anyway I was looking forward to this and it didn't let me down.

Looked like an Alt: reddy brown with an off-white head.

Malt lead in both the aroma and taste: semi-sweet caramel and toffee notes with a basket of mixed fruit all bundled together in a mild hop sack.

Very pleasant, would have had another, but I was on a mission.
