A 500ml clear glass bottle with a BB of Nov 2011. Brewed by Shepherd Neame for the ASDA supermarket chain.
Poured into a Guinness pint glass. A clear reddish-amber colour with strong carbonation. Yields a small off-white head of foam that lasts for a minute or two. Decent aroma of roasted malt with burnt notes, toffee/caramel and a hint of dry hoppy bitterness.
Tastes of dry, roasted malt with a herbal bitterness. Burnt notes and hints of caramel sweetness, with bitter hops upon swallowing. Has that typical 'Shepherd Neame' character. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, but a bit watery. Leaves the palate slightly dry. Aftertaste of bitter roasted malt.
A decent ale - this is probably the best of the ASDA range from this brewery. The body could be a little more substantial, but the flavour and bitterness are well judged. Good value when it's on offer.

Nice ESB. Well balanced with a nutty, smoky taste and malty afternote. I enjoyed this beer.

Served cool from 500ml bottle into pint mug.
A) Pours attractive clear ruby-brown with off-white head that dissipates quickly to a thin film.
S) Smells like English beer!
T) Roasty malt flavour with slight metallic aftertaste. Basic hop flavours soon masked. The carbonation gives it a pleasant tang at the front.
M) Nicely fizzy, goes down easy.
O) Not bad, worth a try.

A nut brown ale? No
Its a good job this has been classified wrong because it isn't what it shouldn't be, I think?
Shepherd Neame say brown ale BA says ESB and ESB is closer.
The best thing about this beer is the aroma, malty with huge blasts of butterscotch.
The look of the beer is nether here nor there too light to be brown, too dark to be amber but a decent head due probably to slightly over carbonisation.
The taste, like someone has washed hops in a sink and then given you the dirty dish water to drink which actually is half decent lmao.
A lovely, lovely smell to a ill looking beer that tastes okay.

New label no longer mentions "strong" ale, but "premium" instead. The beer is a copper colour with a significant head. I find it very difficult to smell anything here: maybe a hint of walnut and musty library corridors!
There is a slight nuttiness to the malt and the hops seem rather herbal. There seems little special here but it seems reasonably well coordinated.

Appearance: reddish-ruby brown, good clarity, thick layer of off-white froth with good head retention
Aroma: toffeeish malt, hint of unripe pear hoppiness
Flavor: dryish malt profile with an upfront, puckering, rooty bitterness; hints of bitter orange, soap, and brown sugar; a bit nutty; finishes dry with a lingering bitterness
Mouthfeel: medium body, prickly carbonation, astringent and minerally
Other comments: A bit lacklustre and a bit too acerbic in bitterness.

actually I liked this brew .... the smell is fruity (pineapples, orange zest ....), the taste is rather nutty with a slightly coarse bitterness (I agree the latter is a matter of personal taste and preference) .... not an elegant version, I agree, but something to enjoy nevertheless ....

Clear 500ml bottle.
Cheap supermarket beers often taste like cheap supermarket beers, this one fits into that bracket quiet nicely.
Dull copper in colour with a white head that dispersed very quickly.
Very little smell, some hops but nothing else I could detect.
Disappointing taste, watery for a 5% beer, nothing like a normal strong ale.
Overal a big let down, I will not be trying this again.

Another beer brewed for the ASDA supermarket chain. It comes in a clear, 500ml bottle, with BB date of MAR 06.
A: dark amber to copper-ish hued, the whin white head is force-poured but sustains rather well. Very light carbonation.
S: fruity/citrusy and floral hop aroma dominates along with slightly biscuity maltiness, mixed with a little buttery, raisiny, and toffeeishish note, and an exotic fruity hint of coconut and a mild tinge of marmalade in the background. Overall a bit "quiet" on the nose and not a single element is pronounced enough to steal the show, and more pleasant aromas have to be waken up by serious-swirling. Not bad though.
T: flatly-textured citrus-zest fruity + toffeeish sugary malts, gradually gaining in bitterness and an earthy or herbal sort of mouthfeel adds to the zesty hoppyness, with a faint touch of nuttiness in the end. Medium-length aftertaste, finished quite clean but a residual tinge of aftertaste of raisins or dried berries is always there deep down the palate.
M&D: light on the mouthfeel and light in body with moderate flavour. This beer falls short of a bigger performance I'd expect of a "ESB", but overall the typical flavours of English hops (Goldings family) help make this a reasonably-balanced and easy-drinking Premium Bitter.
