A 500ml clear glass bottle with a BB of Jan 2014. Acquired a little while back from a B&M store. Described on the label as a winter warmer.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A clear coppery-brownish hue with low carbonation. Yields a decent head of white foam that lasts for a minute or two before dissipating. Aroma of grainy caramel malt, biscuits, fruity ale yeast and stewed leaves. There is a very subtle whiff of something that resembles decaying fruit - fortunately this seems to ease after a while.

Tastes of caramel malt and stewed hops with a bitter finish. Notes of biscuity grain, caramel, faint roasted malt, subtle grass/hay, stewed leaves and fruity ale yeast. Hints of cardboard in the background. Slightly sweet, followed by a restrained, leafy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with spritzy carbonation and a thin, insubstantial body. Possesses a carbonic acid twang. Pretty astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of harsh stewed leaves, yeast esters and weak caramel.

A sub-par, bargain-bin offering from Shep Neame. Lacklustre looks and an uninspired aroma/flavour combination - dull caramel malt and stewed herbal notes. SN yeast esters are pervasive. Insipid body. Uninteresting and not much of a winter warmer either; I can't say I'm hankering for another. Give it a miss.

Clear 500ml bottle (3.8%ABV): poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard at home on 21 Mar 2013.

As the name suggests and the clear bottle shows, this is an amber coloured beer: a white appeared initially but it soon fell away to a wisp and collar.

Fairly sweet nose with malts and spicy hops vieing for position. The taste is also a battle between the hops and malts with the malts just about winning: the hops however do give a dry and bitter finish to each sip.

This OK rather than good: I think it came from the Lidl supermarket chain, so it didn't cost much. Might also be the reason it was slightly watery in the mouthfeel.

Purchased at the Lidl supermarket, this bottle comes in a 500ml clear bottle, at 4.0%abv. only; no BB date is found on the beer label or bottle, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.

A: the lightly carbonated, dark amber body carries a fluffy off-white head that settles quickly to a rim.
S: toasted malts yield a very fine, almost bready, aroma of barley to go with melted brown sugar-like sweetness and rather light-bodied hop fruitiness; the malty theme reminds me greatly of Korean sweet barley tea actually, added with an extra earthy touch (of hops).
T: quite light in taste upfront, the swallow is full of lightly toasted malt aroma and light flavour of brown sugar, underlined by a smoked tea-ish aroma and dryness; turning mildly zesty, just as the beer label suggests, in the aftertaste and bitterness, but all in all the bitterness is rather short-lived and not really making a weightier impact on the overall performance. Semi-dry in the finish with a mildly sour touch.
M&D: the carbonation is pretty decent, matching the light body and flavour somewhat neatly; overall, this is a malt-themed bitter with a moderate hop-flavour and -bitter level plus a dry-ish finish, rendering an above average drinkability.

Purchased at Lidl German market in low altitude Galway, Ireland, and consumed there. Bottle poured into goblet. Their website describes this as a seasonal cask ale but it is available bottled in Ireland.

A: One finger head. Some cream. Bubbly. Poor retention. Amber-copper colour of mild transparency.

Sm: Malty. Mild strength aroma.

T: Very crisp on the finish. Not complex, but nice. Very low ABV isn't difficult to hide. Light hops - no esters. More bitter than most winter warmers.

Mf: Smooth and very crisp. Pleasant finish of perfect smoothness - not overdone. Extremely light on the palette.

Dr: Extremely drinkable, albeit low ABV. Typical for the style (very good). Excellent price at Lidl. Better winter warmers can be had.
