Poured from a 500ml bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a very very dark brown / black colour with a quickly dying down head and no lacing.

Smells very faint, a few malts but not much else there.

Tastes decent, if underwhelming in both malt and hop tastes. Coffee, and a slight burnt taste too.

Overall a decent effort but definitely no "double stout" as everything seems to be reigned it. Would make a good session beer.

Classic English Double Stout.
Creamy and abundant foam, light body, minimal carbonation.
Prevailing hints of licorice and bitter cocoa, then coffee. the roasted malt scent emerges on the finish.
Dry finish quite bitter.

Very dry but chocolatey with some liquorish. Touch of earth. Could benefit from just a touch of sweetness. Absolutely nothing else to say other than better than expected for a Shepherd Neame brew. A sound stout that would be great on cask.

Freshness date very faint on bottle : looks like Feb 2013. Very appropriate dreich evening for this one. Light brown head, thicker than from most bottled beers but small for a stout. The beer is somewhere between a very dark peaty brown and black. Slightly smoky roasted malt nose with distinct whiff of coffee. There's also something in there which reminds me of the smell of my departed Great Aunt and Great Uncle's old house too, something like stale digestive biscuits, only a bit more appetising than that.. Smells like it should be flavourful (less bland than the mass produced stouts) but personally I'm always wary of the coffee.

It's perhaps slightly overcarbonated for a stout with a pleasantly smoky roasted malt flavour which doesn't tip offensively into the coffee realm for me. There's some pleasant hoppiness around the edges. Good but not great. I agree with the previous commenter that the name is overegging it.

A 500ml clear glass bottle with a BB of Feb 2012. Rear label states that it contains 3 different coloured malts. Purchased around St. Paddy's day - I suspect this was brewed for the occasion.

Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass. Initially appearing black as night, holding it up to the light reveals it to be an exceptionally dark ruby-brown. Carbonation is not visible, however it forms a large head of creamy light-brown foam with good stability. A strong aroma of roasted malt with notes of coffee and a hint of chocolate. Smells pretty good.

Tastes of dark roasted malt with a dry bitter finish. Buckets of roasted coffee notes with an earthy hint. Some mild chocolate notes and bitter stewed hops upon swallowing. Faint solventy harshness lingering in the background. Mouthfeel is tingly, but rather thin and watery. Mildly astringent. Aftertaste of bitter roasted malt.

A decent dry stout with good flavour, but let down by the watery mouthfeel. The flavour also lacks depth. It comes across as a dry Irish stout, but lacking the creamy texture and with a much more roasty character. Not the greatest stout around, but pretty good for the price and worth trying.

Purchased recently at the Lidl supermarket, coming in a clear 500ml bottle, BB Feb. 2012, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass. Notes: ingredients include three coloured malts, roasted barley, and East Kent hops.

A: nearly black in colour with some caramely hues, coming with a thick, frothy, well-lasting light tan head and rather light carbonation.
S: the smell comes lightly sweet chocolaty, roast/coffee-ish malty, toasted-grainy, plus a touch of ashy Goldings hops and sour-ish black dates, while random notes of sweet coffee are scattered in the background. Pretty pleasant.
T: very roasty in the light-bodied foretaste, followed by immediately manifesting flows of bitter hops and malt-roastiness; the bitter-sweet coffee-ish aftertaste lingers well, along with a very good depth of herbal-ish bitterness, lending a chewy, dry and thirst-provoking finish. The sour-ish edge typical for an English Stout is very restrained here, leaving the consistently bitter palate to shine.
M&D: medium-bodied for 4.0%abv., this lightly-carbonated double stout has a quite straight forward flavour and a very good roast-bitter profile, without going thin in the long, bitter aftertaste. This is a thirst-quenching stout to me - entered here as an Irish Dry Stout as it's really very dry and bitter.
