Update 9/26/10 - I just returned from another weekend in San Francisco and City Beer is one of the first places I am sure to stop each time. Not only is their selection impressive, but their prices remain extremely reasonable in a city where prices sometimes escalate for little to no reason (that I am aware of). Of the three days I was in SF, we stopped by City Beer each day for at least a beer. It was nice to work our way through a few Midnight Sun beers, as well as a few others not available to us here in San Diego. There was also a hidden gem or two on the shelves. You just had to look for the right things. City Beer should be at the top of your list, whether you're looking for beer to take home or just a place for a few drinks. Great service and a fun place to hang out.

I visited City Beer Store on a recent trip to the Bay. This place is stocked, and overstocked with the beer from local offerings, hard to find brews, and interesting beers from around the world. I was fortunate enough to have just enough room in my suitcase for a few more bottles. The prices were competitive and I was suprised by this due to the obscurity of some of their product. The tasting bar also offered 6 choice beers on tap for you to sip while you peruse the shelves. It was also awesome to be able to pay a small corkage fee and enjoy a bottle right there in the shop. I would be in this place way to often if I lived anywhere near it. I think the only negative, IMO, is the size. It might not even be a negative, more just that I wish they were larger and had even more beer, but it felt like they would have more than they actually did. (1,638 characters)

Bar/Bottle shop with a huge selection. Well known amongst the beer community. Regularly have very limited/special taps on including beers brewed specifically for their store by greats such as The Bruery. (203 characters)

Only about eight taps, but every single one is quality. Pretty helpful service and a nice vibe. Bottle shop is marginally overpriced. (133 characters)

Great tap selection, including a few from Russian River (Blind Pig and Perdition when I visited) and some very good local brews from Cellarmaker and Fieldwork. There was a big bottle selection too, but while Cantillon and some harder to find RR bottles were available, they were extremely expensive and had to be opened and drank before leaving. The bartenders were very friendly and knowledgeable, and the tap area was a fun and social environment.

I didn't get to check out Toronado before leaving SF, but CBS is an excellent place to check out for high quality beer that I would go out of my way to visit again. (615 characters)

Selection was smaller than I had expected, but definitely nothing to scoff at. Was able to find a few 'wants' that I can't get back home in Wisconsin, but nothing mind-blowing.

Vibe was cool, and the inclusion of a small tap room was a great bonus. Didn't stop for a beer but it looked well-managed.

Staff was friendly. A worthy stop, but not a destination in my opinion. (373 characters)

Easily the best store/bar combo I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. Plenty of street parking around the store, if renting a car while in SF. Typically, one of the best to go bottle selections in the city and usually a great tap list, so you can have a brew after all the hard work of beer hunting. (301 characters)
