Notes/Commercial Description:
This classic German Hefeweizen is soft and uber refreshing. It is light golden in color, with a hazy appearance. It has a hint of bananas and cloves in the aroma, and a tantalizing sweetness in the finish. If a dewy Spring meadow had a flavor, Unshadowed would be that flavor. At 5.5%, it’s a perfect session beer whether you’re joining us on our patio or taking some home to yours.

On-tap at Ale Asylum. This pours a hazy, lemonade color with a thick fluffy head. Fairly yeasty for a hefe-weizen. Taste is bold and grassy. Very grainy yet very good. A must try especially on draft. This is rather well made especially for a lighter beer that Ale Asylum is not usually known for.

Big banana, beyond banana. We’re talking serious banana folks. In fact I can actually say that there are multiple types of banana in this beer. There’s green dole bananas, and then there are those overly ripe bananas from the Quick Trip store, and then a few Jamaican sugar bananas, and s few banana flavored runts, and maybe even a Plantain or two to boot.

Ok, now that we got that banana stuff over with I can talk about the rest of the beer’s attributes.

Pour is pretty on for the style. Body is hazy, less so then many hefes but still well with in style boundaries. Color is a straw yellow, just a few notches darker then crayola with a thin white leaning beige head. Carbonation is moderate.

Aroma is obviously bananas with some grass and the ever so faintest hint of vanilla ice cream.

Flavor is pretty much just banana.

Mouthfeel starts well. It’s crisp and refreshing but becomes heavy and cumbersome as the beer warms. The banana yeast just gets to be too much for me and drags the beer down half way through. Body starts medium and becomes medium to heavy. Slightly sweet but not too bad.

Drinkability: Personally, I can’t drink more than a glass of this but most of my friends love it. Personal preferences I guess.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a very cloudy yellowish orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of white head which slowly settle into a thinner layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: A yeasty and zesty wheat driven aroma with good hints of fruit and spice. Upfront Hefeweizen yeast with bready hints of wheat, grains, straw, oat, and crackers. Spicy hints of clove and pepper. Big scent of fruit with hints of banana, lemon zest, and orange. Hints of bubblegum as well. Background hints of earthy and grassy hops. A pretty solid wheat aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma, a zesty and yeasty wheat forward taste with notes of fruits and earthy spice. Hefeweizen yeast and pale malt with bready notes of wheat, straw, grains, crackers, and oat. Dried fruit notes of banana along with some bubblegum. Citrus fruit notes of orange and lemon zest. Earthy hops in the background with notes of grass. A pretty nice crisp wheaty taste.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Crisp, spicy, and very smooth.

Overall: A pretty decent take on a Hefeweizen. Nice fruit and spice flavor. Not on the same level as the German versions but decent for an American take.
