on tap at the brewpub poured into a chalice. pours a fiery orange/garnet color with garnet highlights and a half finger of tan head that has good retention and leaves moderate lacings.

aroma is of rich, dark fruit and caramel malts, along with sweet crystal malts. the aroma ends up quite sweet and very rich in the nose.

taste follows the nose with fruit notes of raisen and plum along with a subtle note of belgian yeast and a touch of caramelly grain on the back end. caramelized sugars throughout with a sweet profile and a warming aura from the 8.5% APV, which is well hidden.

mouthfeel is full bodied and sweet on the palate with a warming finish of residual slickness. very hearty on the palate. lightly sharp on the back end with a bit of warming.

drinkability is good. a very rich and hearty dubbell that brings the flavor and ends up smooth on the palate and after the fact. a very drinkable brew for 8.5%, but not even close to a session. (953 characters)

Banana nut bread is dominant in this fine brew from Madison’s newest brewpub. Appearance is pleasing, authentic even. Prune colored with a wonderful head. The crown lasts forever. A slight swirl of the glass and a quarter to a half an inch of cream grows out of the brew. Aroma is dominated by banana but some date, prune, plum, and other flavors are present. Taste is also banana with biscuit and caramel notes. Alcohol is well covered but I can tell that the ABV is high from how I feel. Mouthfeel is smooth and silky, very pleasurable. Drinkability is very high. Comparable to Allagash dubbel but somewhat better. (617 characters)

Enjoyed on tap at Ale Asylum in Madison, WI. Pours a dark reddish-brown with an off-white head that last. Aroma is of fruity yeast esters. Mouthfeel was medium bodied and smooth. This one was more sweet and sugary than I'd like to see. There was also some alcohol warmth in the finish. Good but not great. (305 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark brownish amber with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of off white head which settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A yeasty and roasty Belgian style aroma with hints of spice, fruit, and chocolate. Belgian yeast with some hints of pepper, clove, and funk. Toasted malt with hints of caramel, toffee, chocolate, biscuit, grains, and straw. Sweet hints of candied sugar. Fruit hints of banana, apple, fig, raisin, and grapes. Also some hints of grassy hops. A solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a yeasty and fairly roasty Belgian Dubbel style taste with notes of spice, fruit, caramel, and chocolate. Belgian yeast with notes of clove, pepper, and funk. Toasted malt with notes of toffee, caramel, chocolate, grains, biscuit, and straw. Sweet notes of candied sugar. Fruit notes of dried banana, apple, raisin, fig, and dark grapes. Background presence of grassy hops. A pretty solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a fairly high level of carbonation. Spicy, somewhat syrupy, and chewy. Alcohol heat is minimal.

Overall: A pretty solid take on a Belgian style Dubbel. Nice spice and fruit flavor with a nice kick of chocolate roast. (1,244 characters)

On-tap at the brew-pub before a tour of the facility.

Pour: murky mahogany/amber under a finger of khaki head that fades to a skim. One of the better looking dubbels I've seen.

Nose: spicy-metallic malts; nutty, dusty yeast, doughy bread and light fruits in the finish.

Taste: nutty, spicy yeast; banana esters and roasted malt harken images of dunkel-weiss; sweet candi sugar and raisin/clove give a more authentic Belgian feel; booze rounds out the finish.

Feel: fizzy, light but substantial, viscous with ephemeral booze.

Drinkable: a nice, well-rounded "Americanzed" dubbel with plenty of complexity and great drinkability. Not as refined as the real thing, but that's not what Ale Asylum is all about. (721 characters)

served in a chalice at the brewpub, cell phone notes

appearance: nice mahogany body poured into the house snifters

smell: mild aromas for the style...fruitcake, mild caramel, light clove

taste: not my favorite of the ale asylum "belgiums", but a decent dubbel...mild caramel, clove, light spice, brown sugar...lacking any sort of punch

mouthfeel: medium body

drinkablity: good (381 characters)

L - Dark reddish-brown. Appears clear. Short tannish head, not persistent.
S - Rich maltiness. Dark fruit, molasses, a little spice.
T - A little darker than the aroma. Dark chocolate, a little burnt toast to go with the dark fruit and caramel. (248 characters)

appearance: The beer is given to me in a tulip glass with a low white head. The beer is a hazy medium brown in color.

smell: On the nose I find big aromas of dark, sugary fruits...especially date but also a little dried fig. Estery notes of banana bread are also apparent courtesy of some complex Belgian yeast aromas.

mouthfeel: The carbonation is on the higher side of the low range, and the body a slick medium.

taste: Very similar to the nose except that the slick sweetness of the sugary fruits is much more evident. Big notes of dates. Just a touch of hop flavor and a subtle bitterness.

drinkability: freakin' easy...an above average American take on the style

On tap at the brewery. This particular batch has been aged since 2010.
Pours a dark brown/honey/burnt sugar color. Very little head but nice lacing. Alcohol and sweet nutty aroma. Very crisp flavour...nutty, toffee, alcohol. Not strong and little aftertaste. This is a very drinkable dubbel. I'd buy again. (307 characters)

poured 12oz bottle into Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a deep, dark brown color; 1.5 finger dirty white head. Head fades slowly into a thin collar and leaves behind spots of lacing.

S - Belgian candy sugar, toffee, caramel, banana nut bread, and spiced dark fruits.

T - Sweet banana nut bread, molasses, dark chocolate malts with Belgian yeast and candied sugar, spices, mild dark fruits, caramel and brown sugar.

M - Big carbonation that really fizzes in my mouth with a nice medium body. A very slight fruitiness lingers on my tongue.

O - Solid overall Dubbel. It was quite good and refreshing. I imagine that this will age very well. (637 characters)
