Very light yellow orange, with a decent head and lace.

Nice nose of banana's, other esthers, soft nose.

Taste is soft and nice, deep feels of malt and nice spices.

Mouthfeel is medium, under carbonation but good, soft feel and an easy drinker, just not a great one. Hard to think this has close to 10% abv, well hidden, one to savor.

12 oz bottle into a tulip

A - Pours a hazy golden color. Lots of head formation, driven by an incredible amount of bubbling. Bright white.

S - Yeasty and spicy, earthy and dry. Lightly grainy. A bit of sweetness: just a hair of pilsner. Some phenolic undertones.

T - Starts off with a huge sugar bomb note, with some pilsner malts. Huge amount of sweetness and alcohol warmth. Lightly orange-like, honey, fruity, some esters. Spices and yeast are less present in the taste. Finishes with some grainy notes.

M - Very thick, sugary cling all over the tongue. Creamy, without much carbonation.

D - Not filling - scary strong ABV which is well hidden. The flavors can be a little over the top.

Purchased from Ray's Liquor in Wauwatosa, WI. Pours a bright golden straw body with no head. Funky aromas of spicy yeast phenols. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a tongue tingling high carbonation. Flavors are spicy, funky and yeasty with a sweet malt aftertaste. Very good drinkability.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into tulip.

A- Pours a nice golden straw color that has a little bit of haze to it. The head is only about a finger's worth and recedes rather quickly with minimal lacing on the side of the glass.

S- Smells almost like a cross between a Belgian pale and a tripel. The candy sugar's are pretty predominant to go along with a little bit of lemon and some white bread. Maybe even some cream corn in there too.

T- The smell of this beer is pretty bold but the taste is a little more subdued. Yeasty, bready taste with a little bit of grain and sugar in there. A small hint of spice tops it off. The alcohol is completely hidden, never coming through.

M- Not a whole lot of carbonation and just a little bit too thin for the style I would like to think. No warming from the alcohol whatsoever.

D- A little too sweet for the style but still not that bad. I think of this more as a Belgian pale than a tripel but either way they go down easy for such a high ABV.

Poured into my duvel tulip the beer is lightly hazed golden yellow. The bright white head gets only one finger high before fading rather quick. A decent amount of thick lacing is left behind.

The aroma is full on spicy belgian yeast. White grapes, pears and apples along with a heavy dose of pepper round out the nose. Definately smells like a Belgian Tripel.

The flavor is similar to the nose. Spicy black pepper, yeast, candied white fruit and a good dose of hot booze. The booze come on a bit hot and strong for my taste.

Very creamy and smooth body. Very mild carbonation.

Overall a nice Tripel. A touch hot but most tripels are amped up with high ABV so it's expected.

Pour is very clear golden color. Bright white head, some lacing.

Nose of straw and melon. A bit subdued.

Smooth and simple entry - flavor builds. A nice Trippel flavor profile mid-mouth...honey maltiness with a hint of yeast. Quite sweet, ripe fruits.

Mouthfeel doesn't libe up to flavor profile - light, and , dare I say it...watery? Not really watery, but just lays there for awhile - alcohol is always there, but lacks fullness.

That said, an easy drinker for alcohol level, nice flavors. A bit sweet for my palate, but a decent nightcap.

12 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip. No date or info.

A - Unavoidable sediment pours out slightly clouding the light golden-honey kissed yellow wheat color. The head is snow-white but weak in stature and retention for a tripel, even with the tall pour. Some bits of lacing stick to the glass though.

S - The aroma is light and crisp right away with a nice marriage or a light yeast presence, spicy esters, floral hops, and a background dry wheat and pale malt foundation. A vigorous swirl releases a light fusel alcohol nose.

T - A light citrus burst starts off the flavor of the Tripel Nova which is followed closely by a complex blend of flavors. A dab of honey-coated wheat mixes with sweet pale malts and a floral hop addition. The mild spice taste lingers in the finish while the alcohol is only noticeable from the tingle while exhaling through the nose.

M - Crisp and medium-light bodied, it's a refreshing tripel with a smooth start and a nice carbonation tingle to the finish. The flavor lingers on the palate for a little bit too. Alcohol warmth in the stomach follows.

D - A good tripel that seems backed off slightly from it's Belgian brethren. Good drinkability is reflected from a nice complex and balanced nose and flavor with a solid mouthfeel.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a St. Bernardus chalice.

A: Pours a cloudy, yet bright and sunny gold color with a thin, bright white head that does a good job of quickly receding to a thick ring, and not much else. A tiny amount of lace is left behind.

S: Aromas of overripe apples and pears. Some hints of spice, caramel, candi sugar, bananas, booze, and fruity belgian yeast.

T: Pretty much just as above. Sweet overripe fruit and spices dominate with some help from caramel and candi.

M: Sweet, sticky, and smooth at first with a gradual shift towards the drier, spicier side of things. A bit of prickly alcohol burn shows up in the finish.

D: Pretty good. I found this to be a little too heavy and sweet with not enough tart and tangy citrus flavors.

A - Hazy golden, pale yellow with a thin white head that quickly disappears.

S - Sweet candi sugar, very overripe fruit, melon, papaya, apricot, honey, some spice and alcohol.

T - Overripe fruit, warming alcohol, some spice, sweet, fruit salad on the verge of spoiling.

M - Medium body on the verge of being cloying with a warming alcohol.

D - Sweet and boozy. It would be hard to drink more than 1 of these.

Ale Asylum has been on a roll with me - let's see how this one performs. Light amber to straw in appearance with a steady 1/2 finger of white head and lots of carbonation bubbles. Laces nicely too. Smells fruity and sweet with no noticeable yeastiness. The taste mostly mimics the nose - lots of tropical fruit (papaya, mango, etc.) but lacks the flavor interest of a good tripel. Medium bodied but a tad under carbonated. I sort of tired half way through this beer - it is well made and drinkable enough but it is not a standout like many of AA's other offerings. One in a night is more than enough for me.

on tap at the brewpub in Madison, poured into a chalice. pours a clear golden color with minimum head that stays at a soapy rim for a few minutes.

aroma is of belgian yeast and fruit with a light character and a mild citrus note and a very light spice from belgian yeast.

taste is of light belgian yeast and some light fruit tones of citrus and a very light apple note. very crisp on the back end. goes down very smooth with a light spice after a bit of warming.

mouthfeel is full bodied and lightly effervescent on the palate with a smooth and mildly crisp finish with only a bit of residual fruit.

drinkability is decent. for 10% APV, the brewers did an excellent job of covering it up. goes down smooth with a warming character and a satisfying finish that leaves the palate with a very fufilled aura. a well put together tripel that can stand beside the best belgian examples. cheers!

Pours a clouded brown touched yellow. Decent enough white head. Flavor is nice and smooth. Good level of leathery barnyard funky with a touch of citrus on the back. Dough is firmly there. This rests on the heartier side of tripels. Definitely is well done and carries some of the character you would expect. And better after it warms. Suggested.

Poured the bottle into my Duvel tulip glass. Pour produces a hazy golden color, with 1 finger of white head which reduces to a thin color within a minute. No lacing present, with only a little spotting on my glass. Initially the aroma is doughy, somewhat warm and sweet. Later ripe melon emerges with only minimal hints of the expected spice-clove, allspice, and alcohol are present, but somewhat weak.

Taste is better than the aroma. This ale is sweet and doughy with slightly more fruit present. Ripe melon, tropical fruit-papaya and kiwi? However, the spice and yeast presence seems muted. While I'm not a huge fan of tripels-many seem too spicy for my taste, this tripel lacks the yeast complexity. There's a touch too much alcohol heat here, perhaps masking the subtleties of the yeast. The mouthfeel is thin, fine for my taste, slightly sweet, but never cloyingly so-however, it lacks the effervescence of Belgian tripels that I enjoy. The bubbles are small and tight, but lack the motion. This ale does not dance across my tongue.

Ales Asylum's Tripel Nova is a fine tripel-don't get me wrong. It's just lacks the aroma, which would improve its taste immeasurably. The carbonation too should be kicked up. As it is, this is a slightly better than average American attempt at a Belgian Tripel. I have no doubt that Mr. Coffey can do better than this. Improved aroma also might help mask the somewhat overbearing alcohol presence.

I've had pretty positive experiences with other Ale Asylum beers, but this one didn't really impress. Seems like this is not the first time that a brewer who makes solid hoppy and roasty beers has disappointed me with their Belgian offering.

This is advertised on the neck label as a tripel, but I didn't necessarily find it to have the likeable lightness and spice I've come to enjoy from this style. There is some spice here, but not a ton of the light, candy-sugar, secondary fermentation effervescence I love about this style. It is sort of a straw color with a limited amount of head. Aroma is a little papery and reminiscent of cut-grass. Flavor is moderately malty, a little spicey, a bit boozy for the style, and again a touch grassy and papery. Mouthfeel was more of a typical beer, and not one of a beer undergoing secondary fermentation (which seems typical for this style).

Not bad; in fact I enjoyed this beer, but I found it to be (and I don't mean this in a negative way), pretty average.

I bought this bottle at Riley's in Madison.

On tap at the Ale Asylum Brew Pub.

Poured a medium and lightly hazy yellow color with a small sized white head. Aromas of fruitiness (bananas and pears), spices, and some yeast. Tastes of fruitiness and spices. Light to medium sweet (not the overpowering nor cloying). Alcohol well hidden.

It sits in the goblet a silty goldenrod as the white lace fades in no time, leaving it bald apart from a few nebulous swirls.
Overripe melon and apricot aroma, along with some tarter kiwi and elderberry notes. There's a yeast-rich breadiness that acts as a canvas, but this is primarily fruity. Allspice-like phenols and alcoholic heat come out more as it warms.
That same fruitiness is strewn out on the yeasty malt blanket into the mouth. It's a veritable sweet-sour punch made of Papaya, plantain, kiwi, berry, melon, lime sorbet, limestone, yeast cultures (or old socks) apple juice, clove, allspice, lemongrass hoppiness, and booze.
This is constructed more along the lines of a plodding, heavy syrup US version of a Tripel than the sparkling, more effervescent Belgian takes. This stops short of being cloying, and at least part of that is due to the drying rasp of alcohol at the swallow.
It's a bit taxing with its assertive flavor and notable strength. But all told, it's quite enjoyable in modest amounts.

A really nice tripel from Ale Asylum. Standard cloudy gold color. Tastes of orange peel and citrus, with a bit of spiciness. Very smooth and drinkable, with a nice dryness. Really a great local tripel. With beers like this, why does Ale Asylum bottle Hopalicious and Gold Digger? I'd rather see this in bottles.

Delivered to the bar with a short lid of bright white foam atop a hazy golden body, the head almost immediately dissipated, parting like curtains before a theatrical play. Not much more than a few tiny spots of lace were left behind.

The nose offered an unusual display of fruit that I took as over-ripe apple, under-ripe blackberry, apricot, melon, and some other tropical fruit character that was clearly due at least in part to the noticeable alcohol.

In the mouth it was not as crisp as expected, but the alcohol clearly cut through whatever malt was there. I'd say "smooth", with the exception of the heat and spice.

The flavor didn't vary much from the aroma except that it was fuller and much more spicy and phenolic. The odd fruit combo was there, dancing the night away in three-quarter time, and if a bit unusual, it was still certainly very compelling! As a sipping beer, there's a lot of complexity to it... except for the fact that the alcohol will eventually take over the senses. It finished spicy and lingering with honey and heat.

Not for the faint of heart! If you're looking for a 'Wisconsin' winter warmer, this will work well to take the chill off the wind from the lakes. OR, it will certainly do its damnedest to get you all 'social-lubricated' up in warmer weather - just be careful with it!

Appears a transparent, light gold with a small white cap that slowly fades out into a mild cap, and hearty collar. Spotty lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of yeast, apricot, tangerine, overipened bananas, pears, honey, and melon.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with a citrusy, tropical fruit salad sweetness that is pretty muched balanced during the enjoyment.
Mouthfeel is semi-sweet, honey lingering, medium bodied, warming but the abv is hidden for the most part. I wouldn't have guessed it was almost 10% abv.

A truly outstanding, kick-ass beer. A friend presented me with a growler of this powerful, tasty brew, knowing that I enjoy sampling American interpretaions of the Belgian art. In the growler Tripel Nova had an inviting, deep orange, semi cloudy hue. But in the glass it poured a deep yellow with a thick foamy head. Very little lacing. A nice fruity aroma dares you to drink, but looks and aroma are deceiving. The high alcohol notes are not as apparent as expected. The flavor is semi-sweet with a tart finish. Quite an elegant, very drinkable Abbey-style tripel. Silky mouthfeel. If you plan on having more than one glass, pace yourself. Better yet, call a taxi or get a designated driver to be on the safe side.

I look forward to visiting Madison's Ale Asylum in the next week or two.

From what I recall of my sample tray....

Not a style I'm overly familar with...

A: A nice light golden color, somewhite hazy, thin white head.

S: Moderate clove aroma, hefeweizen like, also moderately fruity, and a little alcohol.

T: A very complex brew. Initially there is the flavor of clove and maybe cinnamon, toward the swallow apple and pear become evident, and at the finish every so slightly dry with a little bit of alcohol warmth.

M: Medium-light bodied, moderate carbonation.

D: I could drink a few, but that might be dangerous, this one tastes and advertises a punch.

Overall: The taste of this beer is amazing, especially how many different flavors come out at different points. While, not my favorite style, I will order this again. A well done brew.

This was on tap at Maduro Cigar Bar in Madison. The bartender poured this into a large wine glass.

Poured golden orange & yellow. Bubbles were apparent and had very little head.

Smell was quite active with sweet, yeasty and tropical fruit smells.

Tasted like sweet fermented fruit. The alcohol is apparent here, and sort of reminds me of the bite you can get from cheap yellow wines. Don't worry, this is much, much better. It is beer, after all. Forget about lemons and oranges, this more like passion fruit or melons.

I wasn't given a big pour at this location. I was in a long conversation with some friends, and basically was sipping this beer. Not that there is anything wrong with that. However, I would have really liked to have more to see the drinkability of the flavor and alcohol content.

I had this tripel after having Urthel's Tripel. Sadly, this doesn't even compare, and was too sweet for my palette.

Tried this several times at Capital Brewery's Cheers to a Cure. Here's a cheers to the Ale Asylum.

Appearance: Thick golden orange with lemon highlights. A little lacing on top of the glass. No real visibility. Medium viscosity.

Aroma: Bready hints of banana, toffee, raisins with a slight kiwi and vanilla draft in the finish. Faint yeastiness. Impressive smell.

Taste: Raisins, toffee, big melon with some orange juice and lemon rind. Anise notes in a slightly boozy finish that is actually a little refreshing after the complex front palate.

Mouthfeel: Heavier than other tripels I've had, which isn't helped by some of the boozy drafts. But for the most part, enjoyable and smooth.

Drinkability: Fairly drinkable for a heavy beer. Doesn't necessarily have the grace of a Belgian tripel or the easy-drinking quality of a Lake Louie, but pleasant nonetheless. I feel like some more energetic fruits would be truer to style, but this remains a nice take on a tripel nonetheless.

stopped in to the ale asylum for the first time tonite on my way back from business in la crosse

appearance: first off, bravo on the glassare...a nice tulip-esque glass. pours a golden orange-yellow, nice and bubbly, light white foam head that dissipates rather quickly with no lacing

smell: very tropical, fresh citrus, big and yeasty, touch of alcohol, honey, apricot, melon, banana, well spiced

taste: tropical and passion fruits abundant, melon and honeydew, yeasty, lemon flavouring, alcohol (9.9 ABV if anyone wants to enter that in somehow), well spiced, corriander, light banana...good tripel!

mouthfeel: very lively carbonation - almost too much, medium body...closest out of all the categories to a 3.5, but i must break the tie

drinkability: pretty good considering the high abv level

Surprisingly on-tap at the Angelic here in Madison. Nice to see some Ale Asylum brew available downtown for those of us unable to make it out to the Airport with any ease.

Served in a 10 or 12 oz elongated pilsener/tulip hybrid glass, pours a light golden yellow, clouded with yeast and without much of a head, a few sparse white bubbles here and there. Nose is rough and rowdy, dominated by juicy bubblegum, banana smoothie and fruity yeast with a hint of that canteloupe/melon that DaPeculierDane mentioned. Taste is almost as unpolished, complex, and interesting as the nose, with notes of musty yeast, spicy coriander, sweet banana-melon, bubblegum and an overall floral bouquet. Mouthfeel is medium and carbonation is lively. I would imagine this in the 8-9% abv range as the effects could certainly be felt, even with the smaller portion size. By no means a textbook example of the style, this is a bold, flavorful, perhaps sacreligious American interpretation that doesn't always succeed, but avoids the sickly sweet and sticky mess than many stateside tripels become. A solid opener for Ale Asylum. Gotta love the expanding Madison beer scene.

edit: Finally made it to the pub, got the second pour off a new keg and the appearance is completely different. Cloudy yeast makes me think I'm drinking an orange banana smoothie. Still as tasty as the former pour, but that extra yeast mellows it out a bit. A fun, American tripel that I can respect.
