Doppelbock |  8.20% ABV

Availability: Winter

Notes/Commercial Description:
This traditional Doppelbock is full-bodied and deceptively smooth, with notes of caramel and dark fruit. It has a sturdy malt presence and a rich, bready finish.

Appearance: Clear brown copper body, call it pepsi, with plenty of carbonation and a tan head that disappears to nothing quickly. Nothing more than a ring remains.

Aroma: Sweet malts, bread, caramel, and hints of brown sugar, tea like hops.

Flavor: Lots of caramel malt, brown sugar, and some chocolate malt. Grassy with a touch of raison.

Mouthfeel: On the sweet side but quite on for the style. Balanced in that way. Medium bodied. Clean and relatively crisp. No off flavors or feelings.

Drinkability: No hint of a high ABV at all. Very easy to drink.

Solid beer.

Brown hued with crimson highlights. The head is modest and tan, and shirks towards the edges after a while.
Caramel grain nose, backed with berries, and a low-level grapey, brandy-like booze vapor.
Enters with a moment of graininess, meandering towards the coarse side before the sweet caramel, brown sugar, and fruited malt tones catch up. Fully caramelized now with more berries, and more grape, and they linger to mesh with a closing blackberry brandy alcohol flare, tempered with a buffering lagered briskness. Even though its noted, booziness is neither abrasive or impeding.
Medium plus body with low carbonation and a little grabbiness, but it has balls, and I prefer my Doppelbock like that.
It's not an all-time great. But it's solid enough.

A-Beautiful darker-red amber, on the lighter side for the style, with a nice off-white head that doesn't stick around.
S-Nice robust malt presence that imparts a creamy, caramel character; faint hops.
T-Slightly sweet malt upfront, slight mineral and salt with fresh black tea and fig in midpalate ride backseat to rich, delicious malt, and finish is slightly bitter w/faint hops, but the sweet malt continues to dominate into the aftertaste.
M-Good carbonation, w/light-to-medium body. The overall mouthfeel is a positive experience.
D-Quite good, but not my top choice from this fine establishment. The malts are delicious, and the alcohol is well-masked.

Pours a hazy, dark brown color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and decent lacing. Smells of roasted malt up front, sweet malt, some toffee, and earthy malt. Fits the style of a Doppelbock. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp/thick with an average carbonation level. Tastes of slight roasted malt up front, then strong yeast cleanliness, some sweet malt, and a hint of hops in the finish. Overall, a good, rich, thick blend of a brew.

A-Taps a deep reddish copper color with moderate head that fades quickly but leaves nice lacing on the glass.
S-Mild aroma of toffee with a hint of chocolate.
T-Flavors of chocolate with a hint of toffee and caramel.
M-Rich and malty with decent carbonation.
Overall, very good dopplebock. The color is amazing and the flavor is just about right on to me. Rich chocolate and caramel flavors. This is maybe my favorite ale asylum beer and an excellent beer overall.

On-tap at Ale Asylum.

A: pours dark brown with ruby tints. creamy off-white persistent head. clear and purty.

S: Nice big malty smells, caramel, toffee, a bit of chocolate. Some dark fruits hinted at, but not very strong.

T: Huge malty beginning and ending. Hops are only present as an afterthought to prevent the malt from coating the palate. I got a taste of caramels and some chocolate but not at all bitter/stout or porter-like.

M: Full creamy mouthfeel, medium body, slight carbonation. Not cloying or coating.

D: Sneaky alcohol. No alcohol burning taste, smell, or feeling so the 8.2% abv is sneaky. Its a good dobbelbock, nice for the spring since its not as heavy as a stout but feels substantial enough for the fluctuating weather.

Had on tap at the brewpub 5/10 into a pint glass.

Poured a deep mahogany color with a half inch head that fell down to a skim and didn't leave much lacing behind.

Aromas of caramel, maraschino cherries, a mild raisiny dark fruit, but it was really lacking in the melanoidins that make a great Doppelbock.

Taste was sweet up front with caramel and maraschino cherry followed by a bit of spicy hops in the finish. Again it lacks the melanoidins.

Mouthfeel was medium bodied, smooth, but slightly thin.

I wasn't impressed by this Doppelbock much at all. It was a decent beer but not something I would order again.

Nice dark amber color with a nice two finger head out of the growler. Malty aroma with spiciness. Tastes nice and crisp with a balanced malt aftertaste with little hop flavor. Real nice. A little pricey, but worth it. Good beer for the spring. Tap only at the moment.
