Our Belgian-style Grand Cru is a full bodied winter warmer. A slightly spicy aroma and flavors of dark fruit and caramel are harmonious with the classic Belgian-style finish.

12oz bottle. Best by 5/16/2015. Served in a snifter glass 3/19/2015.

A- Dark brown-reddish body, two finger thick white head with strong staying power, nice rings of lacing left over.

S- Sweet toffee and caramel, Belgian yeast esters, mild black pepper. Not much else, it smells quite sweet.

F- It also tastes quite sweet, but nicely balanced between the yeast esters, peppers versus the toffee and caramel. It has a mild dried seaweed like flavour on the finish. I've never quite learned what that flavour is, but it tastes an awful lot like the dried seaweed used to make sushi handrolls. That seems to disappear more as it warms up allowing more dark fruit to show up.

M- Medium bodied, smooth and velvety. Nice body on this one. Decent estery finish on this one.

O- Nowhere near my favourite as far as beers from Ale Asylum go. I think they should move away from trying to do interpretations on Belgian styles (is it going to ever be any better than the stuff on the Belgian import shelf?) and just focus on doing great, unique tastes on various American styles.

Poured from a 12 ounce can into a chalice.

Pours a ruddy red with a two finger head that recedes to a thick cap. Lots of stick. Every so slight haze.

Aroma is of brown sugar and candied dark fruits. Molasses and roasty malt. Bit of bourbon vanilla aroma.

Flavor opens with sweet candied dates sandwiched with pennies. Candy sugar and substantial malt. Fruit cake and molasses. Finishes with slightly bitter roasted malt and warming booziness.

Mouthfeel is thick and sticky with adequate carbonation. Sticks to the teeth a little.

A nice American take on a quad.

Had on tap. 2015 vintage, so aged 3 years. Very smooth, like a light liqueur. Taste is very rich, with caramel, plum, dark cherry, toffee, brown sugar and light flowers. Smells a little like a wit beer that has been darkened by rich flavors. Favorite beer of the night

Taste: raisin, dark Cherries, not real tart, boozy, semi sweet malt notes. Fruit cake, herbal, and alcohol nose. Copper color, clear, average head and lace. Medium body. Smoother than I thought it would be.

I am a little biest when it comes to Ale Asylum because they are one of my favorite brews. I love there strog aprotch at making a beer that stands out with a strong flavor that really bites the tungue but is very enjoyable at the same time. Mercy is no exception. With a great hoppy taste a smell and a nice rich golden color. Very surprised to find out that it has a AVB of a 10 and still have the smoothness that you look for in a drinking beer. A must try for sure.

Reviewed on the same date as the freshness date - 05/19/15:

Pours copper with a thin lasting off-white head. Traiing lace slides down the glass.

The smell is of dark and tropical (banana) fruits with caramel and peppery alcohol.

The taste is sweet - caramel with restrained banana and some dark fruit. Lingering pepper from the alcohol in the finish.

A bit sticky and slightly raw. Carbonation hovers around medium. Caramel and booze linger.

While I didn't find it to be the most complex of the style - the caramel and booze are strong - there's enough to keep it interesting. A slow sipper.
