A: Fairly translucent orange-tinted chestnut brown in color. Forms a decent sized tannish colored head, but it quickly reduces to nothing but a thin ring around the edge. No lacing.

S: The aroma is sweet and malty, with hints of vanilla, fruits, and spice.

T: Wow. This is a seriously sweet beer, almost candy sweet. Actually, not almost - this beer IS candy sweet. Lots of sweet malts, with malty fruits, berries, and a flavor reminiscent of Fruit Loops. There is a little citrus in the mix as well, but it's not a hoppy citrus flavor. Rather it tastes like orange flavored Gatorade or that cheap orange juice from concentrate. Quick finish.

M: Medium in body, but just feels thin for the style. Lower carbonation and a very mild bitterness.

O: There just seems to be something off about this beer. It's certainly drinkable and it's not that's its a bad beer - it's not - it's just that something seems out of place. I'll admit I don't care for sweetness much and this is a very sweet beer. Got through the bottle just fine, but couldn't see having another.

120z bottle that I received as an extra, pour right out of the box it was packed in,into a tulip.

A- Heavy amber color with cloudy characteristics and a foamy khaki head generated by a prompt pour. The head disipates to a 1/4 inch foam that holds like a bubble bath.

S- Dark fruit, molasses and Belgium spice from the yeast. I get some booze, sweet caramel, banana bread and biscuit as well.

T- Lots of sweet flavors with a smooth alcohol burn at the finish. I get dark fruit, dark cherries, banana, biscuit and sugar water (simple syrup). Little to much sweet for me.

M- Heavy. Lots going on, carbonation is good for the style. The lingering booze at the end is a little to much. One I enjoyed but not what i love in a beer.

O- A decent strong. Not my favorite style but I feel this one is done in the opposite fashion of the strong ales you see out west which have a much heavier hop present. This was just a little to sweet for me.

12oz bottle.

Pours a cloudy amber color with a white head that leaves some thick bubbly foam.

Aroma is a little disturbing. Sulfur mixes with dirty diapers, and beyond that there is some sweet caramel malt.

The flavor is sweet malt and cardboardy oxidation, with diaper also coming through in the flavor along with iron and dirt. Some fruity apple and prune presence as well.

Boring mouthfeel with soft carbonation and medium body.

Dude, just no.

12oz bottle, courtesy of shellac01 (thanks, Mike!) into a perfect pint.

A - Pours a nice translucent amber, with almost no cloudiness at all. Not much head of lacing, and obviously no retention, just a thin ring around the glass that slides down as I drink.

S - When chilled, there's not much and it's very subdued. Some Belgian candied sugar, toffee, caramel. As it warms the dark fruit comes out to play, with plums, raisins, and dates. Maybe a bit like a plum wine. Nice enough.

T - The flavors aren't quite as forward as the elements in the nose, but it's still pleasant. Lots of raisin and dark sugary-ness, and a long, thin caramel finish. Upfront it's very nice, but the finish isn't quite up to the task.

M - I'm used to a fairly full mouthfeel in a BSDA, and this doesn't have it. It's not overly thin, but it could use a boost. Very fine carbonation adds to the effect.

O - Overall this comes across as a somewhat average entry in a field of high-quality competitors. Nice but not necessarily something that I'd go out of my way to seek out.

A-Burnt orange..no head

S-Nice sweet fruity aroma...some spicy esters.

T-A bit fruitt...melons...some banana...bready malt back bone....orange peel....some spiciness....I like the way this tastes...becomes a bit one dimensional and fades as you drink it..

M-Low side of full bodied...a little syrupy....sticky sweet in spots but the abv and spicy qualities do a nice job of keeping it in check.

O-Bottom line....is this an all-time great? No...but it is a niice effort by Ale Asylum. Good but not great...enjoyable...

I'm a big fan of Ale Asylum, however for a dark strong ale Mercy didn't get my engine steaming. Pretty muddled in flavor & nothing which made it unique. Some decent hints of citrus like banana & orange and warming alcohol finish, yet still nothing to exciting.

This beer pours a darker amber color, with a small head. The smell consisted of malts and spices. The taste was also very malty and spicey, a bit of orange as well. A nice full flavor, and nice carbondation, and yet still easy to drink. Overall very enjoyable, would love to get another one.

Poured surprisingly thin with a head that fizzled out on me instantly, and looks like a berry juice cocktail in my glass. It's much more translucent than I expected, and small particles hang in suspense throughout the body. I'll try not to dock it for being a style straddler between BSDA and BSPA.

At least it smells a bit like fruit juice, so it has some continuity going for it. Sweet berry mix.

This reminds me of Raison D'Etre more than a little bit, with fruity flavors that definitely recall raisin and white grape. Sweet fruity malt on the tip of the tongue turns dark like molasses towards the end. Sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. Certainly spicy yeast at the end as well, maybe a touch of pepper. Reminiscent of the Unibroue yeast a bit, though less aggressive. This is a flavorful ale, but does not burst with it like the best of the style do. Fairly clean aftertaste, no discernible hops. Warmth provides a softening of the fruitiness, and date, plum, and peach notes. There are dimensions to it, but it would benefit from being more dry and bold.

The carbonation is not in a bad place, but this is a little thin and hot; not luxurious like the best examples.

I wanted to like this more, but I'm underwhelmed. However, it's pretty easy to drink. Or, at least I'm quite thirsty. The relative lack of complexity for the style is a factor. There are some real heavy hitters in the style, and this isn't in that league. I have to wonder if something changed this year, since the reviews seem to have skewed way below the average. Off year? Didn't catch the price on this single bottle I was given, but it's a possible repeat if it significantly undercuts the competitors. Would like to give Ale Asylum another try.
