Ballistic IPA is a fully loaded American-style IPA. The use of American Amarillo hops give it explosive citrus aromas and aggressive bitterness with a smooth finish.

Scored some of these when I was in Milwaukee before DLD 10. Poured a little darker than expected for an ipa, came almost brown, slight off white head to it, citrus aroma, not pungent.

Taste was nice fresh, the rest of the 6 pack aged quickly though. Came off with a little more sugar to it than most ipas. The sweetness is more reminiscient of a double, seems like a lot of the new ones like to push it right up to 7.5% to let the sweet and bitter make up for the expense of dry hopping moreso.

So many great ipas out there, this one is good.

It pours to a lightly smoky bronze color with bleached beige crown that whittles away somewhat quickly, leaving a patchwork of lace.
It's a juicy, resinous, Amarillo assault on the nose. Malt is caramel, and burnt brown sugar, and grape, but it's easy to over look, and not because it isn't there. Pine sap, lime juice, fat buds of Kush, white grapefruit, and pineapple.
The malt makes a nearly obligatory round, with toast, grape skins, caramel, and a few, mixed, roasted nuts. Hops take their star turn, and exude a variety of pine, ganja, grapefruit, and earthen traits. The nose is bright and vibrant, but it gets a bit darker in the mouth. In other words, the wall of tropical fruitiness from the nose is a bit more muddied here. There are some late tracers of alcohol, but nothing that really gets in the way.
For a beer as full of malt, hop, and alcohol flavors, the body gets a bit lazy at times. It's edging towards full bodied, but just seems to droop a bit, here and there.
I feel like I'm nitpicking. I'd absolutely recommend this to anyone. It seems to have aspirations in the IIPA realm, and it's pretty damn close anyway. This is a nice addition to the line-up, and is something I'm sure I'll drink a hell of a lot of going forward.

12oz bottle, 6pack for $9.99 at Steve's

its about freaking time ale aslyum spit out a bona-fide IPA...hopalicious and ambergeddon stretch their respective lines but ballistic is what all the previous efforts were leading up to

appearance: pretty cheesy label and 6pack branding, but ale asylum has always been a little on the cheesy side...poured into an imperial pint, pretty bright-orange amber body with a healthy wave of frothy white goodness atop, nice retention

smell: a nice bouquet of hops - grapefruit-citrus and fresh pine are abundant, pungent orange zest and tangerine

taste: if this beer became available in the same wavelength as ambergeddon and hopalicious (ie: every bar worth entering in the madison area) then we are in for some good times...this one delivers big time in the hops department (amarillo spilling out of the glass). its full bodied (7.5% will do that) with a strong malt backbone but the grapefruit/orange play a dominant role, bitterness levels are moderate and ballistic delivers big time as probably the best IPA produced within the borders (less maybe hopwhore?)

mouthfeel: full bodied, medium bitterness, lovely hop profile

drinkability: hindered by the power, but very nice

poured into a founders pint glass

appearance: a golden honey colored, almost completely opaque which is pretty unusual for an ipa, 1" white foamy head

aroma: nice nose, typical pines and citrus

palate: fairly smooth for an ipa, lacks a bit of the classic kick, medium to full body tho, which makes it feel like a big beer

taste: a little light on flavor and no strong hop base to it, but the flavor it has tastes good. i get mostly grapefruit and some hints of pine

overall: a very nice IPA in a state that lacks quality in this category. i am new to this brew, and i really like it. one of my favorite ipas from this state. right up there with snake hollow, hop hearty and the rest of them. definitely a pick up if its in your area and you like ipas!

It poured a brown color with small suspended particles. I read a previous review that mentioned it looked like cider and I couldn't put it better myself. Head is almost non-existant and no lacing. It actually is a pretty pathetic looking beer. I'm glad to say it's shortfall stops there.

It has a very pleasant sweet and fruity smell, like candied apple. There is an array of citrus hops, mostly orange and a little bit of grapefruit.

It's a well-rounded ipa. Good malt presence of caramel. The middle is citrus and quickly turns into a bitter pine, which is what's left on the tongue along with some spice.

Mouthfeel is thin, but well carbonated. There's a little puckering and drying of the mouth. There is a filmly feeling left behind.

No issues with drinkability. This is a very good ipa that I had know knowledge of prior to buying it. I have had another Ale Asylum ipa that I enjoyed, and this was was another pleasant surprise.

An orange-amber IPA that is all about the Amarillo hops. Honeyish, tangerine aroma. Leaves some nice bits of lace with each sip. I'm sort of tired of Amarillo hops (bought this for the wife) but this beer is growing on me. The flavor is actually quite complex, with honey, biscuit, tangerine and marzipan sweetness. The hop bitterness is laid back and very smooth. Hop bursting?

Poured In: Tulip Glass

Appearance: Pours a cloudy amber orange with a finger of head. Lacing towards the top of the glass.

Smell: Caramel malt (a very slightly toasted scent), a little alcohol, and a nice blend of fruits.

Taste: A nice blend of caramel malt and hops. The aftertaste has a nice blend of citrusy tones, including orange, grapefruit, and a little lemon.

Mouthfeel: A medium body, and very well carbonated. This goes down very easy.

Drinkability: Yet another winner from Ale Asylum. I still think the Hopalicious has a better flavor with it being a little more citrusy. Maybe I am just biased because I had the Hopalicious first. Regardless, I am a big Ale Asylum fan, and I like that they have three relatively hoppy beers.
