Appearance – This is a nice, thick brown in color with a good, cascading head.

Smell – There’s some big piney hops in there but not so much that it steals the show. The malts are sugary and stand up well to the big hop profile.

Taste – This is big but balanced. The hops are more complex at the taste and the malts heavy; laden with mild yeast. This is a very powerful flavor profile that will please the drinker seeking an even-handed AIPA.

Mouthfeel – This is a solid medium-bodied with a light carbonation and a terrific mouthfeel. It is wonderful in between the cheeks.

Drinkability – I preferred this to the on-top version although that may have just been a difference in the batches.

A: Deep orange and golden brown colors. Medium viscosity, but by no means murky. Nice thin eggshell head that does not retain very long but leaves a consistent layer.

S: Sharp piney hop aromas, not overwhelmingly strong, as I thought it would be with its five hop injection, but it is most definitely the most profound aroma on the beer. There is also a slight sweet malt undertone.

T: The hops are great, not too explosive, but certainly not weak. Its no coincidence that a lot of people get a replication of the aromas in the taste, I think there absolutely consistent with each other. I liked the balance of the five hops, but the malts come in well too to balance out the beer (grapefruit being the strongest for me, but also having other citrus in there as well)

M: Not very heavy, lower medium bodied. The carbonation, not too present within a head, plays well into the Mouthfeel. Nice astringency at the end.

D: It's a good beer and it would be quite easy for me to grab several more. For me this is sort of Port's m.o. and they deliver again. Have at it hoss.

I picked this up on a recent trip to LA and am impressed with this beer.

Appearance: this beer poured a golden amber with a huge head. This brew exploded out of my pint glass.

Smell: citrus and piny.

Taste: Like a grapefruit with a little pineapple back. Good lingering bitter aftertaste.

Mouth feel: a lot lighter than it is. Very easy drinker.

Overall: a very tasty west coast IPA that is as good as many Nor Cal offerings. If I see it again, I'll buy more.

A 22oz bomber poured into a pint glass. The beer was a clear golden color with a medium-sized head and a little bit of lacing. It had a predominately floral aroma, but there was also a little citrus in the nose. Nice piney hops taste, with lingering bitterness. Nice example of an American IPA.

Pours a mostly translucent orange-brown with three fingers of dense pillowy head.

Smell is mostly grapefruit hops up front, with some faint grass smell and a very mild malt presence.

Taste is massive hops, again mostly grapefruit, with some floral thrown in; maybe not enough malt backbone for my tastes, but a tasty IPA for sure.

Mouthfeel is medium and crisp. Very dry on the finish

Overall, this is a crisp clean IPA. Not outstanding, but solid.

22 oz bottle. Pours a clear golden orange with a frothy white head that quickly goes to a thin film that laces the glass.

The aroma is caramel malt, melon and spicy peppery hops.

The flavor is sweet sugary malts and fruits (melon and a little banana) followed by a resiny salty tarry (almost plasticy) hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with some sharp carbonation.

Overall, a decent IPA. I didn't care too much for the hop profiles. Very similar to the Hop 15 from what I recall.

22 oz bomber shared with my wife.

Poured this beer into my brandy snifter.
The beer pours a pleasant golden straw color. The head formes and pours over the edge. As is slowly dissipates it laces all over the glass. The remaining head forms a float in the middle of the glass.

The aroma is full of spicy and grassy hops. It lingers on the nose as you drink. Very nice.

The taste is very pleasant. It starts smooth on the tongue sweet with a grassy hop flavor. The carbonation builds but it never is harsh in fact it is very pleasant. The flavor finishes with a hop and pale malt flavor and a slight bitterness. It is smooth and nice great example of a west coast IPA. Will seek out again

Pours a dark reddish/amber color with a nice white head that retains well.

Smells of huge citrusy and piney hops all over the nose and a tad of malt peaking through but the hops totally dominate. Hopsmack!

Tastes of more citrusy, piney, and grapefruity hops with a slight sweetness from the malt but again, this beer is total hop domination. Ends extremely bitter.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a dry finish, good carbonation.

Drinkable? Absolutely.

22 oz bomber pours an amber body with a large and creamy head that is just offwhite. First pour produces a clear body, clouding on later pours. Lacing is splotchy and clumpy. Aroma is big hops-fruity grapefruit and tangerine accented by pine. Body is medium with active carbonation. A bitter hop bite is present. Taste is dry and bitter, very hops driven. Grapefruit and pine, with a hint of orange. Bitterness becomes rough and abrasive at times. A nice westcoast IPA, but a bit rough.

Bomber bottle, w/o freshness indication. Pours slightly cloudy, typical medium almond amber, with a light tan head, that evolves to a tiny bubble film. Spotty lacing, and the nose here is citrusy, pineapple, and a hint of pepper. Love those "S.D." style hoppy IPAs and DIPAs. Pineapple, more citrus, pepper, nice smooth malty base. The yeasty final pour add a nutyness and smoothness to the final few sips, yum. Finely crafted and thoroughly enjoyable hoppy brew. Highly recommended.

The Beers of California

#46

Bottled Date: 9/27/12

A: Golden orange to amber with a glorious fluff of white head that retains well.

S: Orange. sunshine, pine tree, green grass, and daisies. There is also some caramel sweetness and fresh warm bread.

T: Freshness translates to the palate again with pine, orange zest bite, grass, and wild flowers. There is a nice warm bread and caramel sweet malt that provides the backbone to the hop strength of the brew. The heat continues from the middle of the palate to the finish.

M: Resiny and oily with good linger, medium feel and appropriate, lively carbonation. There is smoothness also which adds to the drinkability of the brew.

O: Built in the classic West Coast IPA style. Port brings another solid IPA worth time and attention despite the already crowded and long list of California beers in this style.

Appearance: 1/4 inch head, clear, orange/brown in color, moderate carbonation

Smell: pine hops and caramel

Taste: floral and pine hops with some caramel

Mouthfeel: medium/light bodied, medium carbonation, moderately bitter

Drinkability: An above average IPA. I do like the pine flavor and this one is really well balanced. I could sip a couple glasses of this.

Thanks to barzigkin for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a hazy yellow color with a white head. The aroma is very nice with citrus, pine and oranges. The flavor is citrus with medium bitterness. You also get some pine and resin notes in there as well. Medium mouthfeel and medium-high carbonation.
