On Tap

The Lost Abbey
San Marcos, CA

A deep copper and amber with orange edges. Huge foaming off-white head that lasts and lasts. Not as much lacing as I would have expected.

All sorts of citrus elements in this beer--guava, mango, orange, grapefruit--very aromatic.

A tongue buckling bitter blast of a beer! Hop bitterness galore! Unbalanced to its core--this is hops hops hops! As advertised: delicious and bitter hop bomb! Also some citrus and sweet elements as well, but bitterness steals the show. If that's what you dig, seek this one out!

A relatively heavy mouthfeel and a slight biting alcohol heat on the finish.

A delicious Port DIPA. Big citrus aromatics and huge hop bitterness.

Whilst at 2Bros Tap Room I split a bottle of Port Brewering's 6th Anniversary IPA with a good friend. The beer pours a cloudy copperish amber color with thin slightly off-white head that did not lace all that much. The scent was mostly malt with subtle backdrop of pine and citrus hops. The taste was a big power of bitter hops with strong malt background the pine and citrus come true. With every double monster IPA at 10% ABV the malt base generally dictates the taste of the beer. The mouthfeel was full body with subtle carbonation. Overall it was a good DIPA, but certainly not teh best I have had.

The beer was bottled in May-2012.

a- hazy dark hued orange ale with a decent head (2 fingers +) that hangs around for a bit. strong retention.

s- LOTS OF HOPS!!! this beer is almost two months old too!!! bottled 5/16 and still comes through with lots of sticky, piney, orangey, bitter hops. just beautiful.

t- piney and strong. sorta the same as the nose. just blows you out on hops. im loving this!

m- mouth coating. nice carbonation. goes down smooth.

o- port brewing is always good for a hoppy beer. this one is no exception. recommended if you like good cali style hop assults...

Poured a slightly hazy orange with a thick and sticky off white head.

The smell is mostly citrus notes with a bit of alcohol and a touch of bready malt sneaking through.

The flavor is very one sided, a bit of sweet and bready malt with a hint of alcohol up front that is quickly dominated by the strong juniper bitterness that just overtakes everything else.

The mouthfeel is heavy and very oily.

Not really a hop bomb, more of a bitter bomb, gets kind of boring quickly, a tough bomber to finish.

This one was a part of cmrillo’s 40 Beers* @ 40 Birthday Bash! Shared by cmrillo at his own party! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller taster flute. Poured yellow-orange with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, banana, bread, and spice. The flavor was of sweet malt, banana, spice, bread, and earth. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a fairly good brew. I really didn’t know what to expect from this one going into it. However, I did find a fairly nicely balanced brew when it came to the aroma. On the flavor it was a little off-putting though as the spice note dominated most of the brew and made it a little less enjoyable overall. Worth trying if you get the chance to grab it off the shelf.

Poor Port Brewing. They have been getting slammed lately for everything from big ugly floaties to poor carbonation levels to bottle dating to....you name it. I love Port Mongo. One of the best DIPA on the market year in and year out. After the Hop 15 debacle I started to wonder if there were issues. So today when I grabbed one of these Anniversary Ales off the shelf at my local WF I did wonder if there were issues that hadn't been resolved.

Apparently the issues are being resolved. This brew pours a gorgeous hazy orange. The head is thick, at least two fingers worth of sticky dense cap that leaves insane sticky curtains of lace as I drink down. The nose is ripe mango, tangerine, and red grapefruit, fantastic nose. The Flavors are in tandem with the nose, huge resinous grapefruit, oranges, mango and apricots with just the right touch of sweet maltiness on the back end to keep the huge hop profile in check. The 10% abv is scarily tucked away no where to be found, proceed with caution.

The mouth is insanely gripping, bitter hops, pine resin, dry but worthy of that next sip, so good.

Bravo Port, faith restored. This is a damn good DIPA, PERIOD !

Appearance. Pours a hazy yellow gold with almost two fingers of thick, off-white head that leaves some great bands of lace.

Smell. Pine sap and pineapple, some toasted grains and a bit of yellow grapefruit.

Taste. Pine, pink grapefruits, some lightly toasted light malts. Alcohol is fairly well hidden, considering the big abv at least. Lots of lingering pine sap and citrus rinds.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full bodied with low+ carbonation.

Overall. A big ipa, yes indeed.

Pours a hazy golden orange with a pillowy white head that leaves big chunks of lacing.

Smells of big piny hops.

Tastes of big hops upfront on top of a solid malt backbone. Hops lead off with citrus, pine, grass, and a bit of tropical fruits. Malts come through next with bread and caramel. Although there is big hop flavor, it is only moderately bitter. Alcohol is ever so slightly noticeable, but is pleasant.

Mouthfeel is full with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this falls in line with the other anniversary beers and is quite tasty.

Bottled 4/19/12

Pours bright orange with a finger finger pillowy white head. Good retention and some sticky lacing.

Aroma features loads of citrus and tropical fruits with a heavy pineapple whiff. Some sweet bready malt as well.

Good citrus up front although I wish the front of the tongue would receive a bit more flavor. A little sticky pine sap malt going on towards the middle/end. Finishes somewhat dry with pine and pineapple. Alcohol isn't over the top, but present.

A little sticky with medium carbonation levels. Decent job hiding the alcohol although it's still present.

Pretty solid offering although I think I'd still prefer Wipeout and Mongo. It's a bit beyond the ABV sweet spot and there is a touch too much heat for my DIPA preferences. Also expected something less than a month old to burst with a little more flavor and aroma from the hops. Still a great beer though.
