Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Using Columbus, Amarillo and Simcoe hops and dry-hopping with Columbus, Amarillo and Citra, Anniversary Ale has an intensely hoppy body with fresh tones of pine and citrus. A seasonal release that will satisfy any hop-head who has the pleasure to try it. In addition, we don’t want to make people “wait in line” to try an amazing IPA, so we also bottle it!

We pop a bomber, pouring a brew of glowing tangerine orange into our oversized snifters. It holds a dirty one finger head of eggshell colored bubbles, showing excellent retention. Ridged, arboreal lacing is left around the glasses. Haze reduces clarity and sheen, but no sediment is otherwise found. Carbonation appears to be light. The aroma gives massively bright and blossoming piney, soapy, and grapefruity hoppiness, with a background chorus of sweet bubblegum esters, hibiscus, aloe, sunblock chemical bite, clean pale and caramel maltiness, big fruitiness of cantaloupe, lime, pineapple, and tangerines, musky grape, and singe toffee sweetness. The flavor follows with big booziness and fresh orange zest and juiciness. Otherwise, the buds are flooded with chalky pales, pseudo-wheat dustiness, Styrofoam, phenolic clove and plastics, hoppiness of green saps and plants, fruity nectars, light floras, and oily citric skins, ceramic, cooling eucalyptus greens, black pepper, garlic powder, mineral water, cardboard, brassy metallics, and a soured lactic acidity that lingers. The body is full, and the carbonation is somewhere in the middle. Slurp, smack, cream, froth, and pop all flourish in full force, and the mouth is left instantly oiled and slicked with each coming drop. This allows for a slight pucker, but little more. The abv is big and present, slowing drinkability.

Overall, yet another hoppy offering from Port. We say that not out of disdain, but rather from a place of excitement. As of now we’ve only been able to taste the hoppy side of their pedigree, as we’ve been sitting on their stouts and other darker offerings for a while, hesitant to pull the trigger. We have, thus far, not been disappointed. When we discovered that their typical anniversary swill was a DIPA, we became ever more excited. What we have here does not disappoint. It is large in is presentation, and some might shy away from its booziness, but this doesn’t take too much away from the flavor; it more rather makes you take your time. Everything about this beer is bold, in one form or another, and it would make any brewery proud to be able to call it their own, especially for an annual anniversary, with many more to come.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 5/7/2013. Pours extremely hazy orange amber color with a 3 finger dense and rocky off white head with incredible retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big pineapple, tangerine, lemon zest, grapefruit, orange zest, orange rind, pine, floral, grass, light caramel, bread, and floral earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good complexity of hop notes with a moderate malt balance; and great strength. Taste of pineapple, tangerine, orange zest, lemon zest, orange rind, grapefruit, pine resin, floral, grass, bread, light caramel, and floral earthiness. Good amount of pine resin bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of pineapple, citrus, citrus zest, pine, floral, grass, light caramel, bread, and floral earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity of hop flavors with a fair amount of malt balance; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very crisp, sticky, and moderately prickly mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very excellent DIPA. All around great complexity of hop flavors with moderate malt balance; and very crisp and smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Pours into an imperial pint glass a honey tinged golden with a large blooming over flowing white head, way to much head from a pretty gentle pour.Aromas are somewhat boozy with overripe tropical fruits and a tinge of peppery spice.Again booze plays a big role on the palate providing hefty sweetness to go along with some sweet dough, tropical fruit-like hops with a little pine resin thrown in as well,Iam still picking up just a hint of pepper.A little let down by this beer,I have really liked all of the Port beers I have had but this to me is just a little to alcoholic and sweet, still not awful by any means.
