A pretty basic/average IPA. Slight citrus and floral smell to it. Taste is similar, with a somewhat strong bitterness on the end considering its low abv. It's a light, rather low flavor IPA. Neither objectionable or particularly interesting. Wouldn't drink again unless there was not much else.

Appearance – The promise of yeasty, toasted malt looms large here. This IPA is dark orange in color and very hazy. The head is a wild one that requires a careful pour. It came up beautifully, lingered, and left tons of intricate lacing all along the inside of my Cottonwood Ales pint glass.

Smell – The toasty malt aroma is strong and full of refined sugar, candy caramel, and a touch of Heath Bar toffee. Not to be outdone, the big rindy orange and soft pine keep things perfectly balanced.

Taste – I think the malts win out in the end, but it is quite the battle. They are darker than I had originally thought from the nose. The hops turn to grass and some other kind that I can’t identify. The IBUs have to be up there.

Mouthfeel – This looks and smells like a heavy beer but actually is squarely medium-bodied. The mouthfeel is smooth and a bit buttery. The finish is dry and bitter.

Drinkability – This is a very interesting ale that warrants inspection.

Sampled at the Harmon Brewery. This one was a hazy light amber color, bursting with hop flavor. It had moderate bitterness and a light, sweet hop aroma with some citrusy hop body and a great, balanced finish. Overall it was very tasty, and probably top on my list for future visits.

Poured a pint glass at the Harmon Tap Room in Tacoma.
Nice amber appearance decent head nice lace.
No hop bomb here. Balanced, flowery, mild hop presence. Very smooth drinker - went down too easily. A real nice thirst quencher.
The perfect IPA to relax with during a football game.

Light orange appearance, too frothy of a head almost. Aroma, bitter, not particularly hoppy, sweetness.

Taste, very bitter, again, lacking hop mouthfeel to the bitterness. Smoothes itself out after a few drinks, hop mouthfeel comes out a little bit, more to the grapefruit side if anything. Malt bill low, alcohol seems to be too detectable for being under 6%. Seems like a long hop boil.

Nice price ($5) makes this one a little more drinkable. Standard PacNW ipa fare for the most part, which means its good.

On tap at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, WA. August 31st, 2011.

A: The beer poured a bright orange color with thin head of white foam. Moderate lacing clung to the sides of the glass.

S: There's a nice fragrant aroma of bitter hops along with some grassy and citrus notes.

T: Pt. Defiance has a nice initial hit of citrus and floral hops with some bready malt and a nice bitter finish.

M: There is a dry mouth feel with medium carbonation and a light boozy note.

D: Very sessionable, perfect for sitting at Cheney and watching the Rainiers. Well balanced with a nice flavor, but it's definitely an average IPA.

WOW!

Copper - amber colored brew with a thin but tenacious head

The aroma is a heavenly blend of hops and sweet floral notes.

This is, quite simply, the tastiest NW IPA I have ever tasted. A glorious epic poem to the glory of the hop (sorry Stone!), with a firm malt backbone for balance. Although the IBU's are undoubtably high, this brew has a fine balance and drinkability that is usually missing from this style of beer. The double dry hopping brings out a freshness to the hops that is stunning. I could drink this till I explode. Really. The folks in Tacoma should be very proud to have created this elixer.

Appearance. Cloudy amber with two fingers of fluffy head that leaves some nice lacing.

Smell. Golden sweet malt and a little fruity hops.

Taste. Thick golden malt, herby hops. A little bit sweet.

Mouthfeel. Medium-low carbonation with a medium body.

Drinkability. Not very drinkable. Couldn't finish the glass.

Appearance: very cloudy dark orange, light tan two finger of head. Good retention/lace.

Aroma: citrus, honey, caramel, orange, sweet kumquat, dark bread.

Taste: very mild bitterness, caramel maltiness, verging on way to sweet with little residual backing hoppiness. Mild citrus and pine.

***body is creamy and a bit too rich feeling on the palate. There appears to be a date printed vertically, but its illegible. Maybe it's old, though the shop I bought it from seems to have a very good turn around rate... Either way, its an overly sweet, mildly hoppy ipa and just isn't that enjoyable for me.

Poured from the 22oz bottle into a Dogfish Head Ale glass. Listed as PT Defiance on the bottle I assume this is the same brew. No obvious bottle dating.

A murky brown and opaque body, with perhaps a hint of orange, a good mix of slow rising very pinhead sized carbonation in a few places, mostly on the rim. Head makes about two to three fingers, a little bit yellow but mostly off white. Decent retention and lacing.

Virtually closed on the nose. No hop presence at all, and strangely not even any sense of malt or sweetness. There's a little bit of hiding grain, sense of husk, but this is hardly smelling IPA territory.

Palate hits with a mild, light caramel like sweetness. Hop front on this seems to be in the mid palate and even for a standard IPA it is incredibly small. Good decent body with enough to carry the little flavor that is on this beer. Much of the hop flavor is mostly aroma that comes on the aftertaste. THe caramel sense mixes nicely with a little bit of bitterness, but the hop angle on this is so tiny it's indistinct.

This isn't a bad drinking beer, but as for an IPA it's extremely downplayed. If you are an IPA or hop head nut this beer is going to do nothing for you.

This beer pours a cloudy orange color with a thin head but it's retention was great. Smell was sweet and malty with a hoppy citrusy edge. The taste was sweet, malty balanced with piney hops, endless aftertaste of grassy and citrusy hops. There was a little too much grapefruit flavor in this beer. A little on the malty side for an IPA but still an excellent beer. Medium body with reasonable carbonation. A very refreshing and drinkable beer.

Pours a copper color with an off white head and just a few legs. Nose is caramel and hints of some hops, although not what i would expect out of the style. Taste is similar; would be quaint even for a pale ale imo. Mouthfeel is a decent balance although not much bitterness comes through. Drinkability is not bad. An easy going beer.

22oz bottle acquired in trade with riversideAK (thanks!).

Poured a deep and cloudy golden color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of earthiness, citrus, and some pine. Tastes of citrus, a lighter earthiness, toasted malts, and some caramel. More hoppiness in the aroma with the tastes a little more balanced.

On tap at Bottleworks today.

The beer pours the expected peachy orange color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is a bit unusual on this one. I get some citrus and some skunky hoppy aroma, along with some wood, butter and quinine. Sounds odd, but it's really not bad at all. Flavors on the palate replicate the nose for the most part, except there is less complexity, and something of an orange medicine flavor, along with the hoppy bitterness. As one would expect from a NW IPA, this beer is on the dry side, with just enough malt to counter the considerable hop bite in the finish. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, and drinkaibility is pretty good. Considering the low alcohol, Harmon brewing certainly managed to get a lot of flavor into this beer. Good stuff.

"Brewed with English malted barley and double dry hopped with Centennial and Amarillo hops".

It's small batch-brewed, with definite home-brew qualities!

A: Orange-bronze; hazy with a little particulate; off-white head has some retention & leaves hints of lace.

S: Plenty of grapefruit citrus, apricot and a touch of floral & pine aroma. Quality pale malt (biscuity).

T: Grapefruit & orange citrus hop flavours dominate, some apricot, quality pale malt in background (biscuity), touch of amarillo-aspirin flavour; crisp bitterness is very pleasant (not harsh).

M: Moderate body is slightly creamy and fairly acidic; moderate carbonation.

D: Hop heads should love it!
