22 oz beer poured into a big ol' beer glass. Pours to no head. Obviously it was mashed at too low a temp. Smell is of roasted barley, very singular smell. Taste is very thin, very weak. I can brew better beer in my worst nightmare. I'd be personally embarrassed to serve this commercially. Raise the mash temp to give it more body and give it some sweetness by adding some 40 lovibond crystal and raise the hop profile, not necessarily the alpha acid, and this could be a decent beer. Beats coors, miller or bud, but a horrid attempt at a craft brew stout. At least its not over hopped.

Growler via trade with barleywinefiend - thanks!

Pours a dark brown color with a half-finger tan head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of lightly roasted malts and smooth chocolate. Also present are hints of leafy hops and a faint nutty aroma.

Tastes very similar to how it smells. Equal amounts of moderately sweet roasted malt and light chocolate flavors kick things off. The roast fades shortly thereafter as the flavor profile sweetens. Midway through the sip earthy and mildly spicy hops make an appearance before fading out into a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a smooth thickness with soft carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this was a very smooth and easy-drinking stout - well worth a shot.

The stout from Port Townsend Brewing is deep, dark, not quite opaque reddish brown. It has very little head, but what does form sticks around and leaves moderate lace as well; yellowish tan. The smell is roasty and coffeesque. It’s creamy, it’s dry, it’s superbly structured and flows from creamy malts into bitter hoppiness. Superb, drinkable.

Bottle purchased in Port Townsend during a summer road-trip.

A: Black with a ligh tan head, very little retention or lace (I expect more from a stout).

S: Roasted grain, spicy nut bread, cola and a slight mineral aroma.

T: Pleasant roastyness, slightly grainy, nutty, bready, coffee, chocolate, cola, good bitterness.

M: Moderate body has a slight chalky acidity; modest carbonation; dry finish.

D: Very drinkable.

Appearance: Dark brown that falters when held to light. Flat browns and reds mixed in. Head is small and tan. Drops to a bubbly, loose collar in short order. Pours with minimal carbonation. Relatively clear.

Smell: Light roasted malts. Some hints of cocoa and leafy hops. A bit of light coffee. Milk chocolate and some hints of cocoa. Very mellow. A bit of underlying fruit. Vaguely nutty.

Taste: A bit nuttier than the nose would indicate. Hazelnut more than anything. Mild roasted malt compliment. Some caramel malt sweetness and leafy hops. Some milk chocolate and darker cocoa notes. Not a ton of depth or complexity, but it's clean, and that's refreshing. Warming smooths it out a bit and turns it in to a vaguely roasted nutty chocolate bar.

Mouthfeel: A bit on the thin side. Smooth with a a touch of creaminess. Light to moderate carbonation. Clean.

Overall: Yay for drinkability.

A middle of the road stout. A bit underwhelming at first, but it gets in a groove as it warms and as you sip on it. Drinks clean and easy and sometimes, sometimes, that's a good thing.

This is a magnificent stout. While in the cold Port Townsed this weekend I needed something to warm up with, this was perfect. Pours a deep crude black with a magnificent mocha cream froth that will rise out of the glass. The smell is thick with roasted bavarian chocolates and a deep cocao bean. A hint of vanilla will tempt your inner sweet tooth. The taste is thick and delicious, a nice pleasant roasted coffee bean with a splash of cocoa. A delicious stout, go up to the brewery and have one, delicous, and only about an hour from Tacoma, a must have.

The color was a very dark brown when poured in the glass with very little tan foam and very little to no lace. The smell of roasted malts and bitter chocolate filled the nose. This ale, like their porter, poured very thin. I expect a medium thick ale but this was sort of watery. Not impressed with the flavor. The smell was no way like the flavor of this stout. Not impressed and would not drink it again!

The Stout I sampled from a 22oz brown bottle depicts a sailor shouting "thar she brews" while pointing from his watch on the mast of a ship. It is just called Stout.
A -Pours a deep cola brown colored ale with a thin still tan head. The head leaves a creamy veil of lace.

S - Cocoa and dark toast notes with creamy vanilla. Malty sweet aroma.

M - Creamy full malty with a grainy dry texture. Practically no bitterness as the roasted and creamy feel dominates.

T - A very creamy stout, but not quite a milk stout. S o smooth it's almost like drinking a mix of cocoa and cream soda. The cocoa shows up in the taste and the cream soda thickness in the feel. The light sour notes of a dry stout come in with some roasted + chocolate malts mid-bottle.
Drinks much like a Porter with subdued roastiness, but is definitely full bodied enough to be considered a quality stout.

D - Very mellow and easy to quaff. ot a very interesting brew, but smooth round flavors roll across the tongue and make for a highly drinkable brew.

Why am I the first to review this awesome stout. This has it all, big body, strong finish, chocolate nose and the feeling that you are drinking a higher alcohol stout than it really is. The thick rich taste reminded me of Crannog from BC but why has no WA BA's got their hands on this hidden treasure.

I got a 22 oz bottle, poured into a snifter.

Pours a dark brown, almost black, with about an inch of creamy off-white head.

Smells incredible. Just like a chocolate milk-shake, with hints of roasted malt. One of the better smelling brews I have had in a while.

Tastes like roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, coffee, with just a bit of lingering hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel is like drinking a lightly carbonated milkshake.

While not earth-shattering, this is a very drinkable beer. Very reasonably priced, excellent all around beer. Sip or gulp, warm or cold, alone or with dinner, this is the second winner I have had from this brewery.

22oz bomber purchased at Bottleworks in Seattle. No freshness date, and nowhere on the label does it say Strait Stout, this is just a Stout. No freshness date.

After the cap popped off with a minimum of effort and a minimum of noise, it poured a dark brown, almost black. No light shined through it even when held directly to light. An inch or so of creamy tan foam slowly came into being, and a quarter inch stayed put for some time. Globs of lace are left behind.

The nose is one of brown sugary, mollassesy, cocoa-ish sweetness. As it warms, up, a slightly dark fruit-like scent emerges as well, but it's quite subordinate to the sweetness. No hops detected.

Unlike in the nose, the taste sees the sweet aspects remarked upon above matched with a coffee-ish bitterness, but the sweetness wins out. A dark fruit flavor is in the background. I was surprised to see the abv listed on BA, as it seemed to me to have a slightly boozy flavor as well. There's a mild dryness at the swallow.

Slightly creamy, chewy mouthfeel.

An ok stout, but a little too sweet to drink much of it. It was an effort to put away a bomber, though it probably wouldn't be so hard in a 12oz bottle. While better than some stouts I've had, I won't need to try another, unless it's on-tap at the source.

Poured a dark cola black with a finger of long-lasting light khaki head. Roasty malt aroma dominated by chocolate, espresso, and a hint of sweetness.

Moderate carbonation and an ultra-smooth, somewhat light mouthfeel. Slight sweetness up front with mildly roasty chocolate and coffee and hints of vanilla and biscuity caramel.

Very smooth and easy-drinking stout. Doesn't wallop you with big flavors, but everything is well-balanced.

A graceful, inviting beer that’s deliciously easy to drink, starting with the luscious cocoa-powder nose touched with a sprig of mint. Roasted elements are light, as is the chocolate and the intriguing suggestion of mint in the finish. The nitro infusion smoothes all contours with a feathery sweep. Even from the first sip, this one greets you like an old friend. There’s sweetness in the midrange and the finish is dry. Stellar.

from one of my favorite breweries in this fair state..

dark brown, nearly black, plenty sexy.
full of roast and cheer, a bit of chocolate and a small floral hop profile.
it tastes creamy and roasty, toasty and boastful. it should be proud. good hop bitterness that works well with the coffee and roast that finishes with an easy-drinking creaminess and floral hop. the chocolate rides through the entirety, making quite the nice beverage.
a quality american stout.
