Apparently, Shillings Pub started off as an English-style pub, but recently was bought out and has proclaimed itself an Irish-style pub. Whatever... there's not much that really suggests either country in Shillings's décor, beer list, or pizza-only food menu. However, they did have things like Tetley's, Smithwick's, Boddington's, Harp, and Guinness on tap. But regardless of whatever half-realized theme for which they might be aiming, Shillings is a pretty nice pub with a pretty decent beer list, divided by country; I believe it included Ireland, England, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Mexico, America, and "Other." Though they don't have anything extraordinary, I can't say I wasn't pleased with the selection. My mate and I ordered Melbourne Strawberry, Smithwick's, Founders Rubaeus, Beck's Light, SNPA, and Sam Smith's Nut Brown and Oatmeal Stout. They also offered beers from New Glarus, Sprecher, Sam Adams, Bear Republic, Rogue, Chimay, Köstrizer, Ayinger, Hacker-Pschorr, Erdinger, Spaten, Young's, Beamish, Murphy's, Victory, Baltika, and more. Everything was served in a frosted pint glass.

The atmosphere was pretty cool, dark, clean, wooden, earthy, and laid-back with a dart board and a big picture window in front that makes the place seem larger than it actually is. I'd give it a higher score for atmosphere except for that it is something of a smoker's club, with what seemed like every last patron and bartender smoking a cigarette or cigar. So it isn't exactly the ideal place to really analyze your beer. The bartender was not very knowledgeable at all, but very nice and a decent pourer.

Certainly worth a stop if you're in town. I recommend coming on a weeknight as it can get pretty crowded on the weekends.

Formerly known as Schillings Pub, apparently bought out by the staff. Old green Schillings awning out front, with a white & red Toad Hall sign over the name.

Stopped in here today for lunch, after striking out at Pepi's and Husher's in Caledonia. Glad I did.

Ancient dark wood everywhere, a leaded glass windowed vestibule leads inside the bar, with secluded wooden booths (and board games) along the right side and in the back. Hightop tables in the front windows, under an Abita and Newcastle neons, dark green plaid carpet from the place's former life as a British pub. Above the bar are hundreds of pewter mugs, numbered on the bottom for regulars I guess. Drafts were served in nonic pints, which i'd take over a pewter mug anyday... Teardrop lamps were spaced above the bar with some spotlights on the back bar shelves filled with liquor and knick knacks up top. You could easily get lost in a few beers for an afternoon here.

Draft and bottle selection was equally impressive, bottles maybe slightly more so. Printed list had a sharp and readable layout, ther was also a rotating chalkboard high on the wall in back, it had some nice stuff not on the list. Half the drafts were rotating, and the other half were sort of typical: Fat Tire, #9, Guinness, etc. Draft highlights: MKE Sasquatch pumpkin porter, Titletown Vinterol Rye, Alaskan Birch Bock, Wells Banana Bread, Bells Oberon, and Hinterland Luna Coffee Stout. Bottle highlights: SN Hoptimum, CW Bourbon Cherry Stout, OB Deviant Dale's, Stillwater, Nøgne, Squatters, Weyerbacher, Kulmbacher Eisbock, and many more... somewhere around 50-60 bottles.

Jesse was the bartender, and he was pretty knowledgeable and chatted about beer the whole time. Service was timely and I never had an empty glass. The food menu was fairly eclectic, and they had a separate brunch menu from 11am-1pm. About 10 burger varieties and creative sandwiches and salads, a notch above the usual bar food. I had the Ryan's Express, which was a burger topped with avocado salad and Neufchâtel cheese.

Overall Toad Hall is a redeeming oasis in downtown Racine, an area where there never seems to be much going on. Be sure to check it out if local or passing through, it's a great little bar.

Atmosphere:

This is by far the best bar in Racine, WI. The Atmosphere is everything a beer lover would want, its peaceful, yet not too peaceful, great games, two LCD's so you can watch the game(s) and it never draws a shit crowd. Other people have listed that there is an older crowd in there but that has changed in the past year. Its become a good hangout for the younger and older beer loving crowd.

Service:

Cory is the regular bartender as of recently and he is exceptional. Very knowledgeable about beer, bourbon and wines. He will hook you up and can start a conversation with anyone.

Selection:

Shillings has the best beer selection in Racine. They have 6 or 7 coolers stacked with bottles ranging from Wisconsin brewers all the way to Obscure German imports. They never keep an old IPA sitting around and you might find a few older lagers or stouts but I would consider that a plus!

Food:

I haven't had much of their food, but the Fish & Chips is exceptional!

Definitely check this place out if you're in town for BrewFest or just in town and need a pint!

Wow, first review in about 4 years! Decided to stop on by here the night before the Great Lakes Brewfest.

A small little place, but it has that cozy little pub feel to it. Dark, but not to the point of not being able to see. It was jammed packed for 9pm on a friday night, but it was plainly obvious that there was some sort of a 'swingers' event going on.

I was able to find a booth in the back and was served quickly. Got a Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout and their Bangers & Mash to eat. Good service despite how busy it was. Great price on the beer, but the food was really overpriced for what it was and how much you got.
I think I would have liked it better if there was not some sort of an event going on there and if there were other people my age there; it was pretty obvious I was the youngest person in there. Still worth checking out, but I suggest going on a weeknight.

I spotted Schillings a few weeks ago and finally made my way in to it tonight. I slipped up to the very nice hardwood bar and ordered a pint of Bass. I was very pleased when the bartender asked me if I wanted an American or Imperial pint. That was my first two clues that this bar was worth while (they had 20oz pints and bass on tap).

They had a little two person jazz band playing and though not very Irish or English in my experience it did add a lot to the atmosphere and make the bar very pleasant. Apparently they have live music every Friday and Saterday night and in October ('06) they will expand that to Thursdays for a while as well.

The crowd was very mellow and social, and there was several little side booths for more intimate conversations between couples and such. The bar was very clean, the smokers (though a lot) seemed to linger near the bar and the bathroom (male) was very clean for a Southeastern WI bar.

The new owner was there making his way through the crowd and socializing with just about everyone that was engaging from what I could tell.

Schillings is the place for good beer if you are stuck in Racine for a week at a time for work or whatever. Located one block off of the historic and newly renovated main street Shillings sits in a narrow old two story building from circa 1900's vintage. Inside the bar is quite nice. Dark wood work and traditional Irish art are about. A humongous mug rack hangs above the bar...testiment to the patronage of this place. A close knit feel is unavoidable between the narrow walls here. Everything is clean and there is a nice plasma screen tv that is mounted so if you want to watch you can but if you are there for the beer you would never know it was there. Overall the service was ok...when I asked for the only DFH bottle I spotted in the cooler the waitress said "you are actually asking for that stuff" damn....and this place had promise. Including the CFH I saw offerings from NB, Victory, Sam Smiths, SA, Guiness, Boddingtons on tap (never really saw that before), and some other decent but run of the mill micros, crafts and imports. This place would not be earth shattering for the experienced BA but considering the surroundings. It has to do. Prices, as always in WI, are more than reasonable.

I did notice that there were several flyers hanging about advertising a beer tasting event, which proves that this place is trying. Kudos for that.

Again, aside from Ivanhoe (which is not anywhere near this bars league) this is it in Racine.
