King Crimson is an Imperial Red Ale that delivers a royal bounty of luscious, fruity American hops on top of a sturdy, deep red malt backbone. This beer is lavishly dry-hopped with Simcoe, adding a citrusy and piney flavor and aroma to the toasty, sweet malt notes. This special treat is a very limited Winter release, so enjoy it while you can!

I got this bottle off the bargain table at Grape and Gourmet. I'm sure age was the reason for the discount. I got it in late summer. The release is from winter. Still a great bargain and a pretty good beer. I'm sure the hop profile I encountered was in no way robust as it might have been when fresh, but the overall experience was good.

Pours a dark orange, somewhat hazy color into a pint glass. Small antique white head with average retention and not much lacing. I noticed a lot of dark sediment in the glass.

Aroma and taste were like a light American Barleywine with a bit of Belgian fruitiness thrown in. The predominant feature is rich caramel malt followed by some fairly robust bitterness. Supposedly Simcoe hops featured, but I'm sure some of the hoppiness had died down in the 10 or so months between being bottled and drank. I couldn't detect any specific type of floral hops. In addition to the caramel malts there is some dark fruit presence as well. I thought it was pretty tasty.

Mouthfeel is nice and smooth with the caramel malt. Alcohol is very well hidden except a warming presence. I would like to try a fresh one sometime, but I get the feeling I would still like the "aged" version better. Pretty good!!!

I drank this after aging it 7 months so the massive dose of Simcoe is lost. That is fine because I don't like Simcoe unless it's blended with other hops. What I found was a barleywine like quality. It starts boozy until it warms and then the malts, smoke, meat and chocolate come out. There's a bit of fig, dark fruit and maple. It ends with caramel and toffee maltiness with less sweetness. Not a bad rendition of an Imperial Red and the average score seems fair.

Poor this beer out of a 1 pint 6 ounce bottle into a tall tasting glass

Pours a dark brown with a reddish hue body and a slightly tan head

Smells very rich in American hops

The taste is quite hoppy and of alcohol

Medium mouth feel

In and of itself this isn't a bad beer however I don't really get the red ale designation on the bottle. It doesn't seem to have a very strong malt profile. Not a bad beer though
