A: Poured from the 22 oz, gold foiled (but twist-off) bottle into a pint glass. Body is black. Small khaki/light-tan head on top. Some splotchy lace.
S: At first blush, I got some molasses and roasted coffee. Molasses dissipates after awhile, leaving charred coffee beans and roasted barley malt.
T: Whoa - big time bitterness. Over-roasted barley malt and char combine with a wallop of bitterness on the back of the tongue, which really lingers as a palate-destroying bitterness. Taste of campfire smoke at the back end too. Unlike the best of the style, this one lacks subtlety or nuance - rather than containing sweet chocolate malt or modestly roasted barley in combination with a citrusy or juicy hop flavor, all I'm getting is a combined clobbering of bitterness - from the burnt, charred malt and the hops - on the taste buds.
M: Medium in heft. Carbonation is about what you want.
O: Too one-dimensional and leaning towards the heavily roasted/charred malt flavors. Not undrinkable for me (I like a nice roasty porter, for instance), but I could see how others may feel differently.

22oz bomber: this one pours a dark chocolate brown color. There was about a finger of a tan head on it that didn’t linger long. It has a surprisingly lighter nose. Malts, but not much sweetness at all. Perhaps a bit of chocolate roast and pine. It tastes OK, but I’m not sure why they call it a black IPA. Almost no bitterness to it. There is a good malt body, with some chocolate and roasted notes trying to peak thru but no real sweetness either. It needs a whole lot more hops to be in an IPA category. Let’s just call it a very good strong porter.
