Notes/Commercial Description:
Peak Maple Collaboration is a truly local project. It’s a new twist on our previously brewed Maple Oat Ale. We worked with local farmers and small businesses to craft this beer with Maine-grown organic oats from GrandyOats and Vermont-produced organic maple syrup from Butternut Mountain Farms. The Maple Collaboration is a copper-colored brew with a dynamic mouth feel from the organic oats and a subtle richness in the finish from the organic maple syrup. The beer is in support of Chefs Collaborative, the nation’s leading environmentally conscious culinary organization.

A: Poured out a light copper color. Almost a maple syrup color. Interesting… A finger of nearly white head with little retention and no lacing. I don't trust beer in twist cap bottles...

S: Sweet maple syrup and floral and semi dank hops.

T: Same as the smell. The beer base is a lot lighter than I anticipated. It is almost like maple syrup mixed with a pale ale. Some fruity esters poke through in the background.

M: Medium, sticky body and medium carbonation.

O: The amount of maple flavor is spot on. My main issue here is the beer base. The hop profile seems bizarre for this beer and didn't sit well with me. More subtle hops and a darker malt bill would've suited this beer much better.

Poured into an ale glass.

Looks good at first sight. Nose has plenty of maple syrup - certainly smells fresh from VT. Maybe some burnt sugar there with some malt and oats. Nose is the best thing this beer has got going for it. Upon first taste I was truly let down. Syrupy mouthfell as well.

Look -- I think if you have "maple" on the lable, it should have some sweetness, some smoothness. This beer has neither.

To be fair, it's advertised as being grown with oats. Maybe that accounts for its grainy taste and chewy mouth feel. You will be disappointed if you expect a sweet, smooth "maple" taste -- there is none.

It's like drinking Maple syrup but in beer style. I personally could take some more maple taste. The aroma is wonderful. The mouthfeel is a little light in my opinion but I like heavier beers. The taste is alright, like I said I could use more maple. If you can get your hands on it it's worth the try.

Tasted 10/17/2013 and reviewed from notes...

Solid amber body, no head per se, just a few weak globs of foam on the glass. Aroma was sweet with maple and toffee notes. Taste was of slightly burned sugar; faint hop bitterness. Medium-heavy body; semi-sweet finish.

Oats and maple syrup produced a solid, chewy beer. Very nice warm and charred sugar flavors. An interesting niche beer; a collaboration w/local farmers and producers, especially with a unique style like this. A greatly welcomed beer, making up for what it lacks in appearance with a great flavor.
