This series is a celebration of tasty local ingredients and distinctive terroir. We brewed four beers, each with barley and hops from one particular state (Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York). Each beer in the series was brewed according to a similar recipe, to achieve an ale that is assertively-hopped and dry-hopped, but also bold in its malt character. Since the recipe is consistent, the flavor difference in each beer results from the distinctive local terroir. Working with skilled farmers to craft this series has been an exceptional experience for us. We hope you enjoy the result.

A pretty, bright amber color. The head was medium-sized, tan, and left a bit of lace.
Sweet malt aroma, a little bit of citrus. Buttery.
This beer tasted like buttered bread. Some grapefruit hops became apparent, and were very nice.
I thought the beer was well-hopped. The buttery taste did linger.

Into a pint glass:
A: deep golden brown colored body and had a small creamy head that dissipated within a minute. In the beginning, the lacing perfectly surrounded the entire glass as the beer went down (very impressive). As the beer warmed and more sips were taken, the lacing eventually separated and spread to a spider web around the glass. The carbonation was very subdued in the appearance. It left no rings.
S: malts, piney hops come out only as the beer warms and even that's a super big grasp
T: sweet yet subdued bitter through the previously mentioned flavors adding a bit of floral undertones
M: about a medium (could be closer to heavy?), not as sessionable as one might think, no aftertaste, sticky finish, light carbonation felt on the tongue
O: this is a very good pale ale and am glad I tried it. This beer is worth the price one pays. I would get this beer again in a heartbeat.

Sampled on January 24, 2012. Served on tap at the Barley House in Concord, N.H. It poured a handsome looking medium amber color with a moderaqte, somewhat lingering head. The aroma was bready malts, yeast, and a slight hop note. The body came in at about medium. Earthy and piney hops expressed themselves in the taste aloing with the smooth malty character. There was a nice moderate bitterness. I recently sampled the Peak Organic Vermont version and this is the same thing with Maine-grown ingredients.

With Peak Organic I've come to expect fresh clean hops tastes and the latest sample is no exception.
Poured a 1" light beige head with moderate retention. The body is a slightly hazed orangy copper. The smell has fresh piney hops and though definitely moreso than a mainstream beer it stops short of IPA. Taste mirrors the smell and the hops come through both piney and citrusy. Moderate finish.
I like when brewers can up the hops without going full-blown IPA in the outcome. In this case you simply end up with an easy to drink freshly hopped beer which I'd expect will have broad appeal.

The concept here is great. The website mentions differing flavors of the differnt local grains and I can taste it here. The malt has an interesting grainy quality to it. The relatively high gravity gives some sweetness, but there is some graininess that shines too. Almost like a rye beer. Very interesting. I wish the hops were more prominent, but the malts steal the show.

Poured into a pint glass. The color is golden amber with a nice quarter inch head that leaves very sticky lacing.
The aroma is Shipyard; all yeast.
The taste is Shipyard. The advertised assertive hop flavor is severely lacking beneath this buttery yeast and biscuity malt. There is a chestnutty aftertaste.
This is medium bodied. The carbonation is average.
I am very disappointed by this beer. It tastes like a Shipyard that I had to pay extra for. I guess that's not terrible, but all this great hopping that was advertised is all but undetectable.
