still being brewed as of sept 2011. from notes.
served in a pint glass.

a - came to the table a deep, dark brown liquid with a thick, foamy, dark brown head. leaves thick sheets of lacing in the glass.

s - espresso, tart cherry, rye-like sourness.

t - big roasted malt flavor with faint espresso and dark fruits. has a bit of the sourness found in the nose which doesn't seem right and no discernible hop character.

m - thin for the style with lighter carbonation.

o - goes down easy, but i have a hard time believing this is a double/imperial stout. overall just kinda meh. would probably order something else if i visit the brewpub again.

To be fair, I hate coffee. I've tried it several times over the years. I've tried the cheap ones, the fancy ones, tried it with creamer, sugar and black. I tried it several times while young, in college, and again while living in Europe, where coffee was virtually a must-have for breakfast or if one wanted caffeine aside from Red Bull or Coke--neither of which I also care for.

Bias admitted, this one is still a little overwhelming. It smells like coffee, looks like coffee and tastes like coffee. Dark brown, it has a bit of glass cling, albeit with a thinner body.

This would be a 1.0 accross the board in my personal notebook, but that's not fair as it is what it claims to be. That said, it is unbalanced and extreme ... and tastes like coffee, except it's colder.

This was a bit of a letdown. Presented a dark black color with a small white head. Hints of roasted malts and grains tickled the nose, but were uninspiring. Taste was fair and qualified for the style; roasty malts, hints of nuts, dry grain. Where this beer falls off is the mouthfeel; it was like Coca-Cola without the carbonation. Boring. Drinkability would be pretty good I guess, if you can get pas the average flavors and thin mouthfeel.

Growler for $9.00 (including the growler).

A: Probably the best part of this beer. Pours black from the growler with mayb 1/2" head. Nothing special but a typical looking stout.

S: Hefty dose of coffee in the smell. Some malts as well.

T: Tastes like old coffee grounds. Very disappointing. Completely unbalanced. Just a strong coffee punch and then nothing to follow.

M: Weak. Very watery

D: The beer is smooth enough, but the taste kills any drinkability it would have had.

Probably won't be buying this beer again. Even if you are a coffee lover like me, there are many other better MI coffee-beers (Think Bell's Java Stout, Founder's Breakfast Stout, Arbor Brewing's Breakfast Java Stout, etc.) Don't waste your time with this one

It looks like cloudy coffee and possesses a tangy, sour, roasted coffee spine only to give too much ground to green, cat-urine top notes (due to unabandoned hop influence I presume.) Roasted mixed nuts impressions reside below. Not a "stout" of any kind I'm familiar with; not dark enough; too cloudy; too sour -- a what? (shrug). I think there is far too much novelty mongering going on with coffee and beer these days. Make a stout and call it a stout. This is better described as "coffee beer."

This stout looked like all others and had a decent, roasted malt taste. However, it didn't rock my world. Average.
