Appearance: 1/4 inch head, high carbonation, dark brown in color, opaque

Smell: mint chocolate ice cream

Taste: dark chocolate, char, solid mint presence throughout, especially at the end

Mouthfeel: heavy body, sweet, moderate carbonation

Overall: I think Shipyard excels in adding fruit and other ingrediants to base beers and making that flavor pop. While the mint is a bit restrained here compared to their other releases, it works really well. Some mint stouts approach the flavor of tooth paste yet this stout never reaches there. The mint enhances the stout and is never too sweet. I enjoyed this and would pick it up again.

I like the concept of a chocolate mint stout, this needs more chocolate and maybe less more mint.Pours jet black with a large billowing beige head that settles bery slowly leaving a few broken rings of lace behind.Aromas are dominated by spearmint and black licorice, although Iam not real fond of black licorice it goes well with the aromas of the sprearment.Everything started out so well for this beer but spearment overwhelms everything on the palate and there is also a sharp bitterness that just doesn't work here,it just seems to get a little harsh on the palate mainly in the finish. This beer is close to being something I would search out for but flavors are just to much of a jumbled mess for me to recommend it,again it's close.

Dark chaocolate brown and opaque wit a frothy head of light brown foam that settles out quickly. Aroma of cocoa and subtle mint, not much more complex than that.

Roch flavor of dark chocolate, expresso bitterness, subtle licorice, and a mint accent that comes in at just the right time in the right amount. Any more would be too much, and any less would make it barely noticeable and uninteresting. This must have taken some work to perfect the balance. I could not detect a hop flavor influence, which is probably a good thing, not sure how well that would have played. Full and even mouthfeel. Interesting take on a stout with two flavors that go well together. Decent beer overall, not gimmicky, but would like just a bit more depth of rich stout flavor to play with the mint.

Beautiful full dark brown head from a good pour. Great retention, especially for a stout, and fantastic lacing. Brew is the expected opaque black look.

Aroma is an odd mix of chewing-gum levels of fresh mint and a slightly boozy dark stout. Cocoa hides in the background, as does some slightly burnt coffee, but that mint overpowers all the rest.

Flavor follows the nose, to a fault: mint dominates. Ever had good mint, like in ice cream, or jelly? This isn't it. It really overpowers the otherwise tasty stout flavors behind: milk chocolate, smooth coffee, dark malts, and wheat. Great backbone to this beer, but the gimmick kills it.

Nice chewy, full-bodied feel, with awesome lingering residue. Sadly, the mint remains as well, giving my mouth a bright, fresh feeling, but not exactly what I want in a beer. The alcohol is incredibly well hidden.

Look, if this beer is priced reasonably in your area, and you like stouts, it's worth a try. Maybe the mint will work for you; it just doesn't for me. It's well-crafted, and I like the stout behind the gimmick.

Served on tap at Morris Tap and Grill in NJ. January

Pours full on black. Creamy head. Picturesque layer. Foam is tan. Minty nose. Spearmint. Light chocolate too. Anise flavor base, lots of chocolate, and a definite mint finish. The mint works but is a bit too much in the aftertaste. Interesting, and a clever stout variation for sure.

From the 22 fl. oz. bottle with the gold foiled cap. Sampled on November 9, 2013.

The pour is about as perfect as it can get in my opinion with a chocolate brown color, milky, and with a modest but long lasting tan head.

The aroma has a vibrant essence of roasted milk chocolate malts and spearmint along with other malt characters. It invites me to drink up.

The body is full but delicate on the tongue.

The taste is a luscious balance of chocolate malts and a lingering mint finish. Moderate bitterness and the alcohol is wholly integrated into the beer. Not a touch of it on the nose or taste. Well done.

On draft at The Lark, East Northport, NY.

Poured a deep black hue with a two finger frothy off white head. There was good lacing and retention.

The smell featured a bright mint atop aromas of roasted malt and charcoal.

The taste offered an upfront clean mint that was soon overrun by a full roasted malt, bakers chocolate, anise and charcoal.

The mouthfeel was full and clean.

Overall a tasty double stout. Very nice use of mint.
