A 500ml bottle with a BB of Sept 2018. Contract-brewed by Marston's in the UK; ABV is stated as 4.9%. The label mentions that this was originally brewed for the 2014 Maine Beer Week - a rye IPA hopped with Bravo, Apollo, Centennial and Cascade.

A: Poured into a pint mug. A deep orange-amber hue with good clarity and plentiful carbonation. Produces a decent head of creamy white foam that lasts for a minute or two before reducing to a patchy surface layer.

S: Aroma of fruity hops with hints of citrus, peel, pine resin, mild tropical fruit, caramel malt, subtle rye, ale yeast and faint spice. Pretty good.

T: Tastes of intense aromatic hops with notes of grapefruit, citrus, peel, pine resin, dank weed, subtle tropical fruit, vague grass/hay, caramel malt, spicy rye, ale yeast and stewed hops. Slightly sweet, followed by a robust hop-driven bitterness upon swallowing.

M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with lively carbonation and good body. Hop oils stimulate the palate. Aftertaste of bitter aromatic hops, citrus, pine resin, caramel malt, mild rye and ale yeast.

O: Surprisingly good for a Marston's brew - seriously hoppy and well balanced. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are stuffed with aromatic hops underpinned by malt and yeast. The rye adds subtle depth of character. Nice body; perhaps a tad fizzy. Goes down a treat - well worth sampling.

Today is the occasion of my New Shipyard Beer Sunday (Week 672) & I have to admit to being under impressed thus far. I am hoping that by delving into my bailiwick of IPA Land, I will get back on an even keel. My ship has been kind of foundering today.

From the bottle: "India Pale Ale".

These screwed-up screw-top caps are really beginning to grate on me! I prefer to Pop! them anyway just to gain some measure of satisfaction from the whole debacle. Following that, I began an extremely slow, gentle pour since I could not read the smeared Born On date & this beer seems to be retired. Once sufficiently decanted, an in-glass swirl raised two-plus fingers of foamy, soapy, rocky, light-tan head with limited retention that left some decent lacing in its wake. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was an odd, interesting amalgam of tangerine, sweet orange, pine sap, dried tobacco, mango & caramel malt. Wow. If this comes off in terms of its taste, I will be amazed! Mouthfeel was once again thin-to-medium & I cannot remember the last time that I did a brewery horizontal where mouthfeel was such an issue. Are they overusing a softener? Is it that Portland, ME city water is this soft? Am I out of my mind? Who knows. The taste was actually not bad, which may seem like damning with faint praise, but I had very low expectations based on its smell. It had a pronounced bitterness along with a definite earthiness & closing my eyes, I could have sworn that I was in jay Linville's barn with whole leaves of tobacco drying in the overhead! Wow! Loads of tobacco, mint and pine, underlain by sweet orange & tangerine plus a light malt sweetness, not as intense as caramel. Wow! Finish was dry, earthy, fairly bitter & just the thing to revive me after an otherwise underwhelming afternoon thus far. The real horror is that they seem to have discontinued this beer.

A: Pours an amber color with 2 fingers of head that fades down to a decent cap that leaves good lacing

S: Earthy hops and malt up front along with some candied hop sweetness

T: Follows the nose. Quite earthy with balancing maltiness that is moderately sweet. Fruitiness kicks in mid-palate. Finishes with caramel notes and some lingering earthy and fruity notes

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: A very balanced IPA (don't expect a hop bomb of any kind) that is quite easy to drink. More of an English IPA, especially where the hops count, but it's neither here nor there

Bottle. Clear amber in colour. Subsiding frothy head.
Hoppy aromatics. Citrus - noticeably tangerine. Malt present.
Taste reflects a subdued version of the bouquet. Rye is noticeable. Bitter finish.
Medium carbonation and feel.
Quite good for Marston but this anglicised version of the original could do with an equivalent ABV (5.9%)

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has an orange/beige color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of tangerines, oranges. Taste is tangerines, malts, very light bitterness. Feels medium/light in the mouth and overall, it ain't bad, but drinks more like a session IPA despite it's abv.

Had this beer after I indulged in a amazing IPA from New England brewing. Man was there a difference. This beer just did not stand up. Dark color, not much up front in the way of smell. Fair beer
