From a 12 fl. oz. bottle with an expiration date of May 09. Sampled on August 7, 2009. Light beers are something you either like or you don't. So I try to rate them on their merits for the style. The pour is pale yellow with decent clarity. The aroma is quite malty for a light. The taste is malty and a bit corny. It is bolder than most lights.

12 oz bottle. part of the "Captain's Collection" sampler box.
Appearance: Clear, mediium yellow body with a one finger white head that falls to nothing in about one minute. No lacing.
Aroma: Very subdued, fortunately. Metallic tin, and a hint of spicy hop.
Tatse: Seltzer water, vague spicy hop, doughy malt. A hint of Ringwood yeast butteriness. Not much here to taste, but it's a very light beer, so maybe that's the point.
Drinkability: A good beer to have if you're thirsty for a light one. Not much else to recommend it for.

Bought at Tim's Little Big Store in Old Town. Obviously past its prime as it was part of the bargain bin.
Pours clean yellow with little head as one expects from the style.
Nothing too distinguishing from the smell, and sadly the same for the taste, very light hop flavor and the beer is slightly more buttery than other light beers.
Not much better than the mass produced light beers, but it is slightly better. This light beer still won't compel me to ever switch.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.
A: The beer is a light gold color, with a very thin white head that fades very quickly and leaves very little lace on the glass.
S: The aroma is of light malts, caramel and a touch of hops.
T: The taste has some sweetness to it from flavors of caramel and a decent malt character, rather than the adjunct sweetness that you typically get other beers with the word "light" in their name. There's a mild hops presence that brings a little bit of balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.
M: Crisp and a little smooth, light body, high carbonation, clean finish.
D: A little tasty, goes down easily, not filling at all, very mild kick, this beer is perfect on a night when I want to take it really slow, aside from that however, it's not one that I would seek out.

Pours a one-fingered bubbly, white head that goes very quickly and leaves no lace. Clear pale yellow color. Light carbonation and very light bodied. Starts with a sweet citrus flavor, watery, finish is boring but this has more flavor than a Bud Light and less than a Sam Adams Light. Typical session beer. 83¢ for a 12oz bottle from Cumberland Farms Convenience Greenland, NH.

Man, there is something weird about this beer. Poured out to a clear golden color with high carbonation and a short lived head that reminded me more of what I had come to expect when pouring a Dr. Pepper. Odors of ionized air and some hops. Doesn't smell like beer. Taste was mediocre at best; flavors of watery citrus fruit, and weak hops. Mouthfeel was good enough, with some zing, but the flavor is just killing this beer. I could drink this if I had too, but I hope i'm not in that position anytime soon.

Into a pint glass:
A: light gold color with a very thin white head that fades very quickly
S: light malts, caramel and a touch of hops
T: sweet through flavors of caramel and a decent malt character, hops help bring a good balance
M: light, crisp, clean finish, watery aftertaste
O: it does the trick for what Shipyard wanted, for me, a "lawnmower" beer

The beer pours a nice gold color with a thick frothy white head that fades to lacing. The aroma is average. It boasts of pale malts and a musty scent. It seems a bit grainy. The taste is average as well. It isn't horrible, but it has a real grainy feel and aftertaste. It's finishes clean, but I struggle with the swallow. The mouthfeel is decent. It is a low bodied beer with good carbonation. This is a bad light beer; not that any are good, but I've had better.

Golden color topped with a thin white head that evaporates quickly. The aroma isn't much different than that of a typical light beer. Relatively smooth drinking, malty, grain taste but there isn't much there. Better than your average light beer though.

This beer pours to a very light yellow/golden color with a good-sized head that seems to come from the very active carbonation within this brew! The lacing is almost non- existent.
The aroma of this beer is not overly exciting, some hop and fruit along with a light beer grain smell.
Taste is not bad, has some very nice carbonation and smooth feel. It is a light beer so the flavor seems muted but can notice a nice malt flavor and a slight hoppy flavor. Nothing stands out on this brew, but it is much better than the macro light brews.
I can say that I would not have tried this brew if it did not come in a multi-pack. Still not something that I would normally drink but would imagine it would be a good start for people use to macro brews and want to expand their horizons.

First of all, I'm surprised that Shipyard has decided to make a light, low carb, low calorie lager. Light has 13 less calories than Shipyard's Lighthouse ale and of course, is a lager, clearly two different ball games. While I frown upon Shipyard brewing "Light" because it feeds into lo-carb mania, most micro-brews jump onto the bandwagon of fads like Imperial Ipas. Do I like low carb and low flavor beers such as Light? No, of course not. At the same time, it tastes better than other light lagers. I'm also pleased to see Shipyard brew a lager, following in the footsteps of Magic Hat and Smuttynose.
Appearance: The color of apple juice. Little to no foam retention. Steaming carbonation almost invisible to the naked eye.
Smell: Smells like light beer, not so much to say about that.
Taste: Ok for the category. I dont think the taste justifies the price if Im going to pay for Shipyard Ill have an Old Thumper. Still, theres a crisp lager bite.
Mouthfeel: Surprising robustness. Smooth easy to drink and with a slight buttery aftertaste. Perhaps Ringworm yeast.
Drinkability: High in that its ready for the beer funnel. Low in actual enjoyment.

As part of the Captains Summer box, this Lite was included. It poured a pale straw yellow with much carbonation. Fizz ate away at the, at first, good size white head. No lace nor film was left.
The aroma was of sprits and carbonation gas. The taste was thin, watery seltzer with a thin hop backing. So thin this beer can't even be called crisp. The mouthfeel was watery and its body thin.
Drinkable yes, when a thin, very thin lite is called apon.
With a choice, I would have to grab for something with alittle more flavor.

This beer was offered as part of the Shipyard Captain's Collection 12 pack.
I had this out of a 12 oz brown bottle and served in an imperial pint glass. Freshness date clearly notched for May 2005. Label states that this is a "quality beer" that has "less carbs" and is "low calorie".
Pours a golden yellow with a paste white, fluffy head. The head vanishes rather quickly as major carbonation bubbles are rising to the top.
Whiffs of musty grain and a tad of hops somewhere in there. Also a little bit of that buttery Ringwood yeast as well.
Overly carbonated mouthfeel....very much like a can of seltzer. Actually, tastes like seltzer water as well. Grainy and watery. I rarely say this about beer, but this was a struggle to drink.
What is Shipyard thinking? Clearly a marketing move to make more $ for the brewery...which is just too bad. This is anything but a "quality beer" as the label misleads. The 3.2% ABV just adds insult to injury. Not recommended...especially at Shipyard's pricing.
* This is the first beer review that I've poured down the drain *

Half finger head with poor retention and some lacing on a clear bright golden body. Aroma is standard grains, pale malts and sweet corn. Flavors also of grains, barley, sweet corn and a musty almost mobile hop bitterness. Light body and high carbonation, crisp. Standard light beer. Not much to say good or bad.

my disappointment with hometown brewer shipyard is consistent with this highly overpriced fizz.
tried it at the brewery, on tap, and was pleasantly surprised. thinking back, the gift shop girl--who asserted that this beer is made from english 2-row malt and euro hops--must have poured a different beer as the coloring and malt character was not what was in the bottles that i bought, for $9 6-pack.
the reviewer above who said the beer is strange is right on. it smells weird; probably due to using ale yeast instead of lager yeast, which shipyard avoids, probably because ales are faster (cheaper) to make.
want a good light beer? sam adams light is great; a true lager using 2-row malt. hate to say it, but even heineken light is better than this offering.
shipyard, no more.
