Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Look - light golden, very light blonde color, clear, with moderate carbonation. Small head, maybe half a finger's worth or so.

Smell - as you'd expect, pumpkin-like. Plus a hint of spice, probably corriandar. Nothing much else.

Taste - the taste of the pumpkin flavor hits first, and then in the middle, very quickly following the initial taste, is a sharp bitterness that doesn't last long. Following by the lingering taste of the pumpkin flavor.

Mouthfeel - pretty well-balanced, but leans a bit on the watery side.

Overall - not a bad brew, but not terribly intriguing.

I decided to break my rule about not having pumpkin/Octoberfest beers until 9/1, figured this would make a nice "dessert" after an evening of pizza and wings from BHOP.

The aroma is very nice - cinnamon and pumpkin spice, but mostly cinnamon. Taste is profoundly cinnamon, I only get a very small trace of pumpkin here. Based on the fact that this is supposed to be a pumpkin ale, I have to deduct points for this. There's no head to speak of..very thin texture as well.

As one-dimensional as it gets. I can see why it's so popular though - I love the labeling (I'm sure that helps sales) and it goes down easy, inviting the drinker to have several in one sitting.

Personally, I'm looking for more robust flavors in a pumpkin ale, with pumpkin spice at the forefront.

Well, this sure smells like... something. Obviously some pumpkin pie spices (though no particular spice besides cinnamon is especially distinct) but also a touch of light floral hops and an offputting soapy/air-freshener aspect.

The beer pours a clear gold with a small, spritzy white head.

Light bodied with a fairly crisp finish. Spices are apparent on the palate but not dominating.

This is basically a decent pilsner-esque beer (in the standard American lager style, not the classic German or Czech sense) that had some spice extracts thrown into it. Goes down quick and crisp but there is a lack of much pumpkin pie character.

Pumpkin beers are not my favorite style but when I have one I want it to be a soothing fall experience. This beer appeals to someone who wants to drink 4 or 5 of 'em at once, a spiced fall variant to the golden lagers they might otherwise quaff.

Poured semichilled in 4-oz taster glass, in shifts

A: no head. none. Looks like a cider--good carb (and similar color) but no head
S: sweet, syrupy, perfume aroma
T: allspice, pumpkin are there; sweet; it's not the worst pumpkin ale I've had, but it's one of the most syrupped.
M: much like a ginger ale in texture

Don't let this one form your impression of Shipyard ales.

Dark gold, or light amber. Looks very sudsy. Meringue head supported by cascading bubbles. Lighter than many.

Cinnamon sugar, allspice, and a faint pumpkin aroma. Nutmeg notes are here and there. Malts are very crackery, like unleavened bread. A sweet suggestion of hops.

Very heavy-handed with cinnamon, nutmeg, and pie spices. Graham cracker notes are there, but it's hard to match up with the cinnamon. Sweet, but not sugary. Tastes like a spiced pie crust. Vegetable flavors get crossed up. There are few hops and not much real pumpkin flesh flavor. A shell of a real pumpkin beer.

Drinks easy. No real booze note. Decent suds. And, the body is medium-thin.

Not so good for a pumpkin beer, and that's easy to recognize. They got carried away with the pumpkin pie spice additions and masked the feature ingredient. Probably one and done on Pumpkinhead for the year.
