Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass. Poured much darker than I expected, looks almost black until I held it up to the light. It's an extremely dark brown with lighter brown highlights. the beer has a tan colored head with very little lacing on it, just a small ring around the surface. The smell is pretty good too, very heavy on the malts. Notes of caramel and brown sugar, the hops fill in after. It's a very tasty brown ale, but the hops are not as prevalent in the flavor as the smell. Still heavy malted with same caramel and brown sugar notes, a molasses taste to it as well. The mouthfeel grew on me as I drank it. It's very heavy and full, almost chewy, stout-esque. No carbonation bite or alcohol, there is only a slight bitter finish from the hops. Reasonably drinkable beer, more of a sipper for a nice cool day.

Poured into a mug, the appearance was obviously a brown murky color with a little white cap of a foamy to bubbly head. Quickly dissipated leaving some sly lace running here and there, but that slid off into oblivion fairly quick.
The aroma definitely had those Fuggles hops up front that so few Americans seem to enjoy but I didn't mind. The obvious faring of sweet to roasty nuts/pecans, dark toast, sweet bread, caramel/toffee malts, quickened biscuit sweetness and a touch of acceptable diacetyl.
The flavor leaned into the sweetness of the prior mentioned aromas carrying in a little bit of yeasty sweetness. Fairly decent aftertaste of the dark toast, light grassiness of the Fuggles hops, and caramel/toffee malts.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied, perhaps just a touch under with a fairly good sessionability about it. Carbonation felt good. ABV felt on par. Light finish of the dark toast and yeastiness (I'd think this was a lager the way it finishes, but whatever, I'm not concerned).
Overall, one of the better Shipyard beers, in my opinion and I have to admit - yes I am a brown ale fan, apologies for that. Try it depending upon your sensitivity to diacetyl.

On tap at the brewery. Pours brown with off-white head and nice lacing. Aroma is of chocolate, bready, toasted malt and dark fruit. Body is medium and smooth. Toasted malt, brown sugar, dark fruit and some hops fill the mouth. Finish is long and semi-dry. OK brew.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, deep, dark, mahogany color with an eighth of a finger of white-colored head that quickly dissolved into a thin lacing of foam that partially covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Nice aromas of roasted malt, imparting notes of freshly baked and toasted dark bread and biscuits. I also get some notes of black pepper, lots of brown sugar and slight touch of floral, piney, hops.

Taste: Nice beer! Lots of bready, roasted malt flavors up front, followed by some good brown sugar-like sweetness, black pepper, and a touch of dried stone fruit, such as raisins and prunes. There is just a touch of nicely balanced hoppy bitterness at the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and nicely effervescent as there is some good carbonation to tickle the taste buds. With an ABV of 5.4%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: Nice beer. Good flavors of bready, roasted malt nicely blended with some brown sugar-like sweetness and slightly bitter hops. Recommended to all malt fans.

12 oz bottle served in a Belgian snifter 1 month before BB date.

Pours clear dark reddish-brown with a weak head that leaves minimal lacing.

Aroma: Caramel and medium roasted malts; faint hint of English hops.

Flavor: moderately strong; limited complexity; slightly sweet balance. A touch of spicy hops in the finish and hints of smoke and coffee in the lingering aftertaste.

Feel: smooth, medium-full body with medium-light carbonation.

O: near average for style.
