Of the standard strength IPA, say those under 6%, this is one of my absolute favorites. Essentially, all the guest approve. I would serve it without hesitation and here's why:

First, no funny smells and a normal appearance. Second, it has no funny taste and is not overly bitter. Third, I guess it is 6.4% and I could had sworn it tastes less potent. I would grab this over Long Trail or Sierra Nevada in a split instant because of this. Those beers are okay, but their flavors are not easy drinking. This beer would have a very low potential for tasting skunky and to me always comes across as clean and refreshing, despite being an IPA.

Chances are I wouldn't buy this just for myself. If company is coming, it's good to have something other than the heady brews I've come to love on hand. This would be one of those excellent choices.

Best by October 2012 (just in time to sip during football season):

I may be one of the last reviewers of this beer as I was told when I bought a 12 pack at Shipyard today for $9.95 that this beer will be discontinued.

Into a pint glass:

A: very clear golden yellow body that gave an off-white half finger head. Minimal lacing spots the sides of the glass.

S: some caramel, vanilla, and malts up front with the hops taking a back seat.

T: pretty much the same with some butterscotch that came in ever so slightly.

M: medium with nothing bad on the tongue. It had a good mix between wet and dry. I would say this is pretty drinkable. The ABV was hidden well.

O: this is pretty good, I'll be sad that I won't ever see this again, but I would say despite what others have said that this is a decent English IPA because the malts are in front of the hops (the hops are there, one just has to take note of it). I will definitely savor the next eleven of these.

Appearance: pours a hazy orange color with a 2" head. Some spotty lace develops.

Smell: very fruity with a soft floral hop presence.

Taste: caramel, orange, pears, golden apples, and a mild floral bitterness.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Crisp from start to finish. Aftertaste is short lived.

Overall: this is more like a pale ale than an IPA. Very easy to consume this beer, that leans more towards the fruity side than hoppy.

Poured into a pint glass with two fingers of smooth off-white head on top of a caramel colored body - solid retention, though I may have agitated this one a bit getting home.

Overly sweet bready caramel nose Where dem hops?

A sip is sweet buttery caramel with a hop bitterness indistinguishable from the medium carbonation. Not terribly pleasant lingering bitterness.

I don't think this is an IPA. Maybe some sort of brown, it's just too sweet for the style. My first home brew was better...

A: Golden yellow, very clear. Nearly 2 inches of bright white head that settled slowly. Much lighter in color than you would expect for an IPA.

S: Caramel, vanilla, and some earthy notes from the hops. No citrus is apparent in the nose.

T: Butterscotch candy flavor. Vanilla and caramel are also present. Some hops bitterness after the sweetness up front, but the hops subside quickly.

M: Moderate amount of carbonation. Light bodied.

D: This is a unique representation of an English IPA based on the butterscotch flavors. I wouldn't compare this brew to most other IPA's that I've been accustomed to drinking. I liked it, but would not reach for this offering if I wanted the hops bite that you get from most IPA's. Also would have never guessed that this brew is 6.4% ABV. Very smooth - worth a try.

Opened the bottle and had a whiff and came up pretty empty. Poured a little thin, meager head. The taste was nearly nonexistent and thin and pine-like. I didn't finish more than two gulps before I had to get rid of it.

I'm finding more and more that small brewers (in this case Tremont, not Shipyard) are small for a reason and am consistently disappointed.
