22 oz twist-off bottle poured into a snifter.
9%ABV, 1.088 OG
A - Hazed through and through, this bright orange beer is briefly topped by a loose ivory head that sinks to a ring of bubbles below specks of lacing.
S - Sticky caramel malt sweetness and grainy pale malt overlap the tame roasted pumpkin aroma, but nutmeg spice fills in the gaps for a round and sweet fall beer aroma that ends with a trailing fruit note from the alcohol.
T - The beers rather shy aroma (especially regarding it's ABV) is deceptive, for this beer is quite potent in flavor, not afraid to burst fourth with roasted pumpkin and spice. The spice blend here is different from most though, as it seems to focus a little more on clove and nutmeg, forsaking cinnamon and allspice. Delicate European hops do their best to balance the tall order of sweet caramel and bready malts that really collect along the finish.
M - Wheat malt contributes a wonderful smoothness to the body of this high octane pumpkin beer that encourages easier drinkability despite the elevated level of sweetness. Warming alcohol caresses the throat on the finish, really pairing wonderfully with the pumpkin and spice notes for a fall beer finish.
O - Shipyard's Smashed Pumpkin starts with a somewhat weak aroma but quickly becomes rather boastful in flavor and feel, bringing smoothness and sweetness together with pumpkin and spice for a hefty cool fall day brew.

Wouldn't usually go for pumpkin beers, but had this one was given to me by a friend, so excited to try it. What there is of the thin tan head escapes quickly, leaving only a reddish-orange brew. Aroma consists of spice, yeast, pumpkin and sugar. Can you say dessert? Tastes just like your favorite pumpkin pie with a little alcohol added for good measure. If we are going by style alone, and staying true to moniker, then this beer is top 10.
