Pours a very nice clear pumpkin color with a slightly weak head and lacing. Nice pumpkin aroma coming from this brew. Pumpkin flavor and pumpkin spices are nice and taste good. Feel is nice also, but a little too much alcohol taste and afterburn. Believe this would have been a much better beer at about 6-8% ABV. Overall, commendable, but not great !

I've wanted to try this for a while but usually opt for six packs over bombers, so I was psyched to see it in (at least) four packs this year. I did buy it with some apprehension because I strongly dislike their Pumpkinhead, and didn't want anything that resembled that. But if this does resemble it in any way, they took whatever good processes they were applying to the PH and amped them all up on the Smashed. This is a totally different beer, and this beer is fantastic.

Pours a pretty copper color into a stout jam jar, has very little head and very little effervescence to it. Nose is sweet and malty with really light spice and booze (oh yeah, this stuff clocks in at 9%). The spice, which their website identifies only as nutmeg, comes off like cola.

Flavorwise, yes it's malty, yes it's really sweet, but somehow not too sweet. There's a slight butteriness to it, and then the booze is cutting it and giving it a drier edge. It's definitely a dessert-beer in my opinion; I also bet you could do a pretty fantastic ice-cream float with this (I'm not an ice-cream float person, but if I were). The mouthfeel is big and syrupy, and the alcohol just gives it that extra push to send it, but surprisingly it's not too boozy.

I just think this stuff is great - they hit all the right stuff here. I will say I didn't get much pumpkin in the flavor, but I usually don't with most pumpkins, and for that reason I don't hold it against them anymore. I would totally buy this again, even after proclaiming I was done with the pumpkins for the season. I've really had a lot, but this one's a standout this year for me.

Don't bother trying to age this one. It just doesn't hold up over time. Have it fresh, where the face-kicking barleywine effect is still spiced and pie like. It's really nothing at all like Pumpkinhead.

look: 4.5 | smell: 2.5 | taste: 3 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.25

Look: This beer looks good, nice head that stays around, light copper color. Compared to other pumpkin beers I think this looks far better.

Smell: Holy shit, what did they make this out of? It smells like a pumpkin pie, but there is something really off. Its almost as if you accidentally dumped in all the nutmeg and clove. Its overpowering and off-putting to me. There is underlying sweetness as well. Overtime it becomes less off putting as you become used to it.

Taste: Remember when you were a kid and thought because of the smell vanilla or spices would taste good. It is the same experience with this beer. At first the taste is over-powering and too strong. Luckily though, there is enough sweetness in this beer and eventually you become taste-blind. The redeeming quality is that it does try to replicate the flavor of a pumpkin pie.

Feel: Nothing wrong here. It doesn't taste too hot, too sticky, or weird carbonation. Beats quite a few other beers of this style that seems to have messed up carbonation.

Overall: This is a beer that when you are pouring it looks great. The initial smell is promising but then overwhelming. The taste at first is too strong, but overtime it does become better. I think that mixing this beer with Southern Tier Pumking might taste good.
